I don't like the word gay that much either, after knowing it's origins. It's kind of late to change it now, I guess, but it came from thinking all gay men were sissy nellies, effeminate, shallow and dissipated.

Gay as referring to sexuality came from one of it's meanings, "to be addicted to dissipation and pleasure" and that's really rather biased and uncomplimentary.

I'm sure most people don't know that, or care, though and accept the word as it's used currently.
