Zac Efron & Lauren Conrad Into Kabbalah?

I have been deeply pondering about the significance of the red string bracelet that High School Musical's Zac Efron and The Hills' Lauren Conrad have been sporting lately. Zac and Lauren’s strings each have a charm of a hand on them called a 'hamsa'. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach of TLC’s Shalom in the Home explains:

"It’s a kabbalistic symbol. Wearing it is meant to bring down God’s mercy and kindness.”

The crimson-colored bracelets look very similar to the red Kabbalah string Madonna and Britney Spears made famous a few years ago. Nicole Richie has also been spotted sporting the red bracelet. However Zac, 19, (who’s girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, 18 also wears one) tells Us Weekly his bracelet:

"Is not a Kabbalah string. There’s no religious meaning to it.”

One time my ex-boyfriend tied a piece of hemp to my wrist and said it was a symbol of our relationship. I ended up burning it. So I can believe this theory.

All I know is that if you go to the Western Wall in Jerusalem and give money to the poor, they'll give you a red bracelet. You can also buy one at Rachel's tomb...but they're not part of some cult or something. It's just a holy thing, but I forget what it means.

I always have a hair tie on my wrist because I need to tie my hair up sometimes. One time someone asked if it was a Kabbalah thing and I was bewildered. Now it turns out I could've been unknowingly endorsing anorexia? Damn.

Because that's what it seems like. And now my hate for Madonna is back.

I love how they ask the "Shalom in the Home" guy.

Hey, you're Jewish, right? What gives with the bracelets? I'm asking you since you're on television, because that means you probably know "LC" and the Efron boy.

Intimately.
