Jane Magazine Shuts Down

Just in from Condé Nast corporate:



Jane magazine will cease publication with its August issue, it was announced today by Charles H. Townsend, President & CEO of Condé Nast Publications. The website, janemag.com, will also be shut down.

"This was a very difficult decision for us," Mr. Townsend said. "We worked diligently to make Jane a success. However, we have come to believe that the magazine and website will not fulfill our long-term business expectations."

That the Jane site will also be shuttered is a shift in strategy from other recent high profile magazine closings. Hachette's ElleGirl.com and Time Inc.'s TeenPeople.com were spared in their respective print killings.

They will most likely start sending you another magazine to replace it.
When Premiere stopped they started sending me US Weekly and something else was canceled and they sent me Seventeen to replace it.

I hated Jane after a while but this makes me sad for the future of publishing.

I wish they'd work harder to get circulation up instead of cutting and running. And please stop blaming the internet for your failures because I am on the 'net all the time but still subscripe to 9 different publications monthly. The internet alone cannot ruin the magazine world. It is your lack of ingenuity, hiring of shitty writers and bending over to shareholders that makes you unable to compete.

(i used to work in print advertising)

advertisers only want to be in the million-subscriber range, and jane was around 300K :(

i guess it's all about quantity vs quality...

I know, right? I had just discovered it a few months ago because I always wrote it off as "Teen" or "Seventeen" until I actually read an interview. A non-music magazine that does interview with Conor Oberst is fine by me...
