Free album to change the music industry?
The Crimea

A little known indie band from Camden, London may be about to revolutionise the music industry.
The Crimea, who were dropped from Warner Music after one modestly successful album, will give away their second album in its entirety, reports British newspaper 'The Guardian'.
With physical album sales in freefall, they feel that by giving the album away they will significantly increase their fanbase, thus maximising their ability to make money from touring, merchandise and licensing deals.
The album, 'Secrets Of The Witching Hour', was funded by the band and is now available to download from their website, www.thecrimea.net
Crimea drummer Owen Hopkin told the paper, "We've always strived to get the music out to as many people as possible. We want to harness the power of the internet. If it's on there for free we'll reach more people than the orthodox route of selling the record."
The experiment will undoubtedly be watched closely by both the music industry, and other indie bands undoubtedly excited at the prospect of bypassing the increasingly archaic routine of seeking a recording contract.

I haven't listened to it yet (still downloading) but let me know what you think...

*Edit: WARNING! Before you download listen here http://www.myspace.com/thecrimea - apparently these guys are so shit they had to give their album away ;-)

A few months back I made a website for a band and told them if they wanted to get some decent exposure that they should give their album away for free. Seeing as they spent nearly 8k recording it I figured they'd get some press coverage for taking the gamble but they shot down the idea and streamed the stuff instead. Now streaming media isn't the way to get an article in a national newspaper plugging your bandname and website but meh, who wants exposure and coverage and a billion unique hits anyway.

I don't get it. If you can't sell an album, surely your only option IS to give it away for free. Turning it into a publicity stunt and making it seem like something special... you have to be pretty stupid to think this is, well, anything worth talking about.

Why they didn't set up their own shop on their website, with a free streaming option, I do not know. At least that way they could make some money back.

Except for ginormous huge acts (like U2 or Gwen Stefani) there's really no money to be made in the music industry. That is if you want to make it "big". There is TONS of money to be mad locally. You could play shows in dive bars every night, but if you have a big fan base, you could live off of the revenue generated from CD sales, t shirts, bumper stickers, pins, you name it.

Es mucho hard to get into the biz bbs. Sad to say.

Actually, if you're in a band, most of the money that you'll make is going to come from live shows. Merch sales will come second.

Oh I hate the way the music industry is going. Duh, I'm totally guilty of downloading music, but I think it's a good thing when you just want to check out an artist without spending the money to find out you don't like them.
But what about the thrill of opening a really well packaged album? I was totally happy that I bought Back to Basics when I opened it and there was all this nice artwork and lyrics and so forth. So if digital really is the way forward, I'd rather...err, walk backwards.

people do want albums. they want booklets with pictures, lyrics, and hell, i even like to read the bands "thank you" section. but the mainstream recording industry is kicking themselves while they are down. they continue to sign sub-par artists and finance more shitty albums. so do people want to download a few songs before they commit to buying? sure. but when said recording industry doesnt get the million dollars in sales they wanted, they bump the price of the album up, and no one wants to pay $17.99 for a fucking hinder cd when they can download a great couple of songs online then go buy the whole awesome, say, sondre lerche album for $10.99.

if anything, the recording industry, imo, will cause the demise of the tradition record by signing horrible bands and releasing horrible albums, not people who download music.

i was just saying the other day that it'd be a whole lot easier for the fans if artists just gave us their music for free.

they can just take the $7798787 in fees ticketmaster charges for me to see their concert.
