Former Annie Kids Deal with "Life After Tomorrow" on Showtime

"Life After Tomorrow," a documentary by original Annie cast member Julie Stevens — about how the musical forever changed the lives of the show's orphans — debuts on Showtime Dec. 24. Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Charnin and Charles Strouse appear in the film.

Stevens — who closed the original Broadway run as orphan Pepper — co-directs the film with Gil Cates, Jr. The film has run a film-festival circuit (Malibu International, Newport Beach, Palm Beach International, Phoenix) and made its New York debut at the Museum of Television and Radio Oct. 21.

The film airs on Dec. 24 at 8 PM and will rerun on Showtime Dec. 25 at 3 PM. (All times ET.) Check your local listings.

"Life After Tomorrow" is billed as "a personal journey" of Stevens, who with Cates, Jr., "spoke with over 40 women who played orphans in the show during its original run on Broadway, from 1977-1983. The film explores the life-changing repercussions of child performers in Annie as many orphan cast members revisit their experience in the show, their childhood, family support structure, what happened when they left the show and tried to resume a 'normal' childhood, and what they are doing today."

In addition to Annie creators Charnin and Strouse, the film also features "fans, agents, adult cast members and a new generation of Annie orphans." Arguably the most well-known Annie alum, Parker is included in the film along with MSNBC anchor Dara Brown, recording artist Joanna Pacitti, actresses Martha Byrne and Alison Smith and songwriter Danielle Brisebois. (Original Broadway Annie Andrea McArdle and the 1982 film's star Aileen Quinn do not appear.)

Chris Kelly and Motty Reif serve as executive producers. Thomas M. Harting is the director of photography, Steven J. Escobar is editor and Megan Cavallari provides music.

A revival of Annie is currently enjoying a limited engagement through Dec. 30 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Dammit now I have that song by Jay-Z stuck in my head.
Wish I had it.

All child stars have it rough one way or another.

My music teacher's told me horror stories about how a lot of former Annies get vocal nodes and ruin their voices.
:-p

When I was in fifth grade and we had to watch the puberty films, the one I had to watch was hosted by the girl who played Annie in the '80s movie.

I cannot believe how many people I know who have not seen Annie in some incarnation. National tragedy.

But I don't understand why/how they're having an Annie documentary without either McArdle or Quinn... It just seems wrong, somehow.

Apparently McArdle had some issues with what the film was going to end up being like and whether the tone would be negative or not.

McArdle had issues with the negativity of the show. She disagreed with the woman making it. In fact, the woman who made it lied to Sarah Jessica Parker and only got her involved by saying Andrea McArdle was doing it, despite McArdle already turning it down. Apparently. SJP is pissed to all hell now.

LOL @ the women who are still in love with their ten year old selves.

The creepy guy, Jon Merrill or whatever (the grown man who's an Annie expert who's supposedly interviewed in this) yelled at me one time. LMAO. He's so weird.

I don't get Showtime though, so I'll have to wait :-(

If you notice, only the former cast members who grew up to a) have shitty lives or b) are still convinced they are amaaaazing because they were in Annie a million yrs ago are involved in this. Andrea McArdle had issues with the negativity of the show and refused to be interviewed for it. She disagreed with the woman making it. In fact, the woman who made it lied to Sarah Jessica Parker and only got her involved by saying Andrea McArdle was doing it, despite McArdle already turning it down. Apparently. SJP is pissed to all hell now. Both she and McArdle have very pleasant memories of Annie and have made statements about this documentary.

Oh man. I JUST watched the version with Tim Curry and Carol Burnette a couple days ago. My 8 year old cousin made me watch it. It was like three hours long and the girl playing Annie was ugly as hell.

Took me quite a while to figure out Annie was NOT blowing someone hidden behind the curtain and the face above is actually the O.

no pun.

Awful art. They really could have done better.

She played another orphan first and then was Annie. I watched this last night and got all worked up. I fucking loved Annie when I was little. Oh, and SJP and the other ex-orphans were talking about how they went to Studio 54. The youngest girl was 7 at the time.

a little orphan girl once told me that the sun would come out tomorrow. her adopted father was a powerful billionaire so i suppressed the urge to laugh in her face, but now, by gum, i think she may have been on to something!
