Welcome to the LJ home of The Black Hat Society! This society was created by

mermaidinblack. Why yes, those other ladies have their Red Hat Society, but now WE have the Black Hat Society! The Black Hat Society (or BHS) is for those grande-dames of Gothiness, as well as their younger sisters who wish to partake of Old School Gothy wisdom. Fajera had this to say (taken from our BHS Tribe):

"Since I am tired of seeing red and purple hats and things everywhere I go, and Goth is now a symbol of teenage angst and just plain depressing, I thought that it was High Time some things changed. So I borrowed Elizabeth Lucas' poem "Warning", which is where the old broads in their red hats get their name. Tweaked around a few words. This will suit until I am struck by a poem that better suits.

WARNING, for the BHS (adapted from the original)
When I am an young woman I shall wear black
With a black hat which suits me and adds to the air of mystery.
And I shall spend my monies on incense and vintage clothes
And paste jewelery, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall shade myself under a parasol when I am hot
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run and stick my tongue out at people who stare
And make up for the sobriety of my later age.
I shall go out in my barefeet in the rain
And tend the flowers in other people's graves . . .

Black Hat Guidelines:
During the first score of your life (that's the first 20 years), one's hats shall be gray. During one's first score and ten (your 30's), the color you shall wear is black, but the hat must be without a veil. The second score and later (40's and up!), our most grand years, the black hat may now be veiled and the embellishments grow larger and grander as benefits a grand-duchess of Gothiness!

The hats we wear reflect the year and stylings of our anachronistic lives.
Bonus if when you are out with the rest of the women of the Society, you attempt to wear clothing that goes with your hat!

We hope to further the Society with the occasional outing to historic cemetaries, high tea, Gothic literature readings, perhaps even out dancing at a local nightclub. Obviously our emphasis is on old-school (that is, original 1980's) Goth music and attire, with small nods to some of the more clever innovations of the 90's and beyond (such as they are). Sharing fashion and other tips is always welcome (Victorian & other period costuming, vintage embellishing, Gothy decor, and so much more)!

We invite any and all to come visit us at our Tribe home, BHS-We Wear Black Hats. All OG's are welcome, and neonates as well!

National Black Hat Day is July 11 (in honor of the birth of the Goth Godfather, Peter Murphy)!!
