Holy crap this tower [Jul. 19th, 2008|12:30 pm]

rosewater
Dan just sent me a link to the creepiest tower.

For the first few photos I actually couldn't see what was wrong. By the end I was going "aaaah what the fuck." Then once I figured out the scale I was going "AAAAH WHAT THE FUCK."

In a word: awesome.

Quick Post [Jul. 18th, 2008|11:43 pm]

divka
This is a quick post before turning in for the night. I have to say two things.

1) I am covered with mosquito bites from the garden yesterday. I didn't realize this until I absent-mindedly scratched my arm at work today. Now I want to scratch all of the skin off of my body. The garden is doing brilliantly, BTW. Pictures will come at some point when I no longer need my hands to rend the flesh from my body.

2) Watching the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie is a waste of precious hours from your life. Good larb, that was an atrocious movie. My (not-so-bright) orange cat has an intense dislike of DVDs and the DVD player. He wants to murder the little sliding DVD slot and the evil LEDs. I should have let him go for it this time.

Okay, I took a Benadryl for the endless itchinng a few minutes ago--and given past experience--I should be passed out asleep in about fifteen minutes. So, I should migrate toward the bed before I fall asleep in the cats' food dishes.

John Hodgman just posted this on his Twitter:

"The fact that people are COMPLAINING about the WATCHMEN trailer proves that Internet=most efficient pure disgruntlement engine in history."

Oh my god, that is the best thing ever.

You guys, I just watched the Watchmen trailer and I got a little emotional. I don't demand perfect faithfulness from movies or whatever, but when it's a graphic novel movie and I actually recognize most of the shots as frames from the book? It's a perk. I do see the value of adapting rather than simply translating for the screen, but Watchmen is a masterpiece so I'd be less than thrilled with too much alteration, beyond cutting out the obviously secondary plotlines. Um, the point is, it looks great and I'm really really excited and it had better be good?

Dorks [Jul. 18th, 2008|09:12 am]

Last night, I emailed [info]thebaglady, my friend from grad school and fellow scientist here on campus. I emailed her to let her know that I had made another set of Dr. Horrible screencaps available. She emailed back to let me know that she was also working on Dr. Horrible screencaps at that same moment.

Ladies and gentlemen, what are your tax-funded scientists doing up well past their bedtime on a Thursday night? Why, they're screencapping America's favorite gay character actor in his role as a lovesick super-villian.

All I can say in reaction to today's Emmy nominations? Thank goodness. If his performance in Season Four of Lost didn't get a nomination for an Emmy, I don't know what could:

"Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series"
Michael Emerson as Ben

And of course, Lost is up for best drama. I would have liked to have seen more actor nominations from the show, but alas.

And....and...

How I Met Your Mother
Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson

YEEEEAH...baby.

Okay, I need to get a life. Errrr....well, after I do my bajillion plasmid preps this morning. Then, I'll get a life.

My uncle in California is the fam's resident genealogist. He recently uncovered yet another ancestor who was a baddie: Devil Jim Turner. Murder, robber, horse thief, and burned down at least one courthouse in broad daylight.

The ole family tree also boasts a bank robber, a woman who shot her abusive husband, and that woman's son who shot a buddy over a game of poker.

One of these days I am gonna have to write about these people! It's hard to believe that these are all on my mom's side of the family... the normal side ;)

So the university resubmitted all my materials to the state department of education so that my K-12 certification will be on my license. The university is saying the snafu was my fault—apparently on the application for licensure I did not list an area of secondary endorsement. Never mind that I’m pretty sure we filled those applications out last August BEFORE the state announced the new opportunity to GET secondary endorsement through the Praxis II. Never mind that I specifically asked the office several times if they would double-check my application for me. Fingers crossed that the new application will be processed quickly and get here by August 1st so that I can be officially hired (right now I just have an “intent to hire” form, but at least my signature is on SOMETHING in that county office).

I had fun with the girls in DC last week even though I was waaay grumpier than I should have been due to all this mess with my license. I HATE HATE HATE being worried about stuff. HELPFUL HINT: Make sure you go to the zoo BEFORE all the animals take their afternoon naps / the indoor exhibits lock up at 4. We ran around Adams-Morgan, had some yummy Thai food, and visited the coolest bookstore I have ever seen, in Dupont Circle, for the rest of the night. The bookstore had an amazing selection in a relatively small space, PLUS a wine bar and cheesecake counter!!! It was my life as a store. I would totally live in a brownstone in DC, given the option / if I could ever drag JQ out of the county.

I cannot wait for the Mentalist. Simon Baker = ♥. Plus his character’s name is Patrick which is clearly one of the best guys’ names ever (right [info]velvet_gl0ve?) so ten bonus points. Hopefully it will last longer than the Guardian did now that he’s a little better known from being in the Devil Wears Prada. Although from the commercials, I’m like, isn’t this just Psych on a different network?

Also TV related, SYTYCD tonight! New partnerships and individual voting numbers. Also, “spoilers…” )

Writing is s l o o o o w going for me these days. I was going to try to write along with Laurie Halse Anderson with her daily prompts at [info]writergrl but travel and laziness ugh. What happened to my hobbies? I have not made jewelry in forever. I need to buy some beads and findings. I feel as letharrrrgic as a tired pirate.

Finally, someone in this town needs to open a gelato shop and make me some rose petal gelato. I miss Splendora like WHOAH.

♥,

Dr. Horrible [Jul. 16th, 2008|08:29 am]

Looks like the Dr. Horrible site is functional again this morning. Go. Do.

EDITED: From what I understand, those outside the US can go to the above link to watch the show. This was a problem yesterday when the site crashed--and the only other option was to watch it on Hulu.com which is limited to Americans. But, now that the site is back up, it should be accessible everywhere. Let me know if this turns out not to be the case.

[mood | sore]

I have heel spurs.

Today I went to the doctor to get the arch of my foot checked out, because it's been aching, and sending out these horrible shooting pains.  The doctor announced that I have heel spurs, which are basically my foot's misguided way of dealing with inflammation (by creating little calcium spikes!).  So he sprayed this incredibly cold spray on my foot which I think was supposed to be anesthesia but was a damn sight more painful than any shot I've ever gotten.  I suppose I shouldn't be complaining because it's probably the closest I'll ever come to experiencing some kind of super-villain's Freeze Ray, but hell, I suppose it's even more disappointing if that's the case, because, heck, FREEZE RAY.

I have the Wii Fit Balance Board sitting on my table, and I can't even use the dang thing.

When I got home Sunday evening, I discovered that the mound of clothing to go into the closet that I'd placed on my chair on Friday was, in fact, still there.  Due to my hurting foot and general laziness, I put the pile (mostly coats and towels) on the floor.  Penelope immediately came over, stomped all around on it to flatten it out, and ensconced herself on her new throne, once again the prettiest princess in all the land.

Today she is lovey and full of slurps.  David will be watching her while we are in Colorado for the wedding of relatives, and I hope that she doesn't get too lonely or eat the carpet or something.

Dr. Horrible [Jul. 15th, 2008|05:42 pm]

FYI, the first episode of Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long-blog went up today. It's so busy that I can't get into the site--so you may want to try later in the evening.

But, don't say I didn't remind you!

I realize now what I need. I need a Neil Patrick Harris icon. How could I NOT have one? This is a travesty.

Latent thoughts about "Lost" [Jul. 15th, 2008|12:55 pm]

divka
You ever feel like you're the last person to realize something? This may be a truly obvious thought about season two of Lost, but it just came to me now while reading a NY Times article:

Cut in case you haven't seen season Two all the way through yet. )
Um...that's it. Back to work now.

You know you're constructing too many plasmids at work when..

... you get a set of primers in the mail that you designed last Friday and you can't remember what the heck they are for.

I have remembered now. Thankfully I write this junk down.

Now what do we do? [Jul. 14th, 2008|06:17 am]

Dang, our flight has a three hour delay. I already checked us in via the website.

Is this like snow days where you just go in late? Or do we have to show up on time and wait around? I'm agonizing, especially because the website showed that the flight was overbooked. I felt lucky to get a seat.

The Washington Post is starting a 12-part series on "who killed Chandra Levy?"

Three reporters spent a year investigating the 2001 case. Why does it matter enough to devote those kinds of resources?

While I'm feeling ranty, how long is Spiderman's flu going to be the storyline? It's reaching Mark Trail absurdity levels.

Saturday Night [Jul. 12th, 2008|10:52 pm]

divka
I got back from an evening that I did not expect would have involved Weird Al Yankovic dry-humping the chest of middle-aged woman. But it did. Life is strange, isn't it?

Today, I also used a part of our IRS stimulus check to replace my six year old iPod. Yes, my old iPod was so old that it was entirely text in black and white--no colored screen, no video, no nothing. And it was heavy enough that it could serve as a home protection device. I knew one person who had an iPod older than mine--but she replaced it years ago. Hers had approximately 15 seconds of battery life. My old school iPod worked so well that I couldn't bring myself to waste money on a new one. The IRS stimulus check made me do it.

I went over and bought it at the nice locally-owned Mac store that fixed my hard drive when it crashed a few months ago. I figured that way I could get what I wanted and support the local economy at the same time.

And...and...I happen to have all these lovely season four episodes of Lost rattling around on my hard drive, since I've been gathering them up for [info]rosencrantz. Hooray--time to convert the episodes to watch in a tiny-tiny format.
