The OEDILF site and forums seem to be down ... getting "Zero Sized Reply" messages.

Virge is aware and is trying to fix it.

I've requested our server provider run server diagnostics, since I suspect we may have been suffering from hardware related problems. The diagnostics will take several hours to run.

Our disk had crashed. It's now been replaced.

Now is the time for reinstallation and restoration from backup. This could take a while, especially since I'm due at work in an hour.

I think L5 is a little weak-- it may not be clear to everyone what is meant by "box".

Perhaps something like:
When the server's old drives meet their doom.

(although old may draw too much stress there).

Aside from assuring everyone that back-ups DO exist, I have no major input at the moment. Everything is in Virge's very capable hands and the site will be up and running as soon as possible.

In order to get something like my daily OEDILF fix during this temporary down time, I listened to your 2004 NPR interview with Scott Simon on NPR. Also I checked out the Wordcraft web site, from which, I believe, the OEDILF site emerged. BTW, has the system ever crashed before, or is this the first time?

Wordcraft is my IE front page. I'm in and out of it all day. There haven't been any recent problems with it all so I don't know why you had difficulty. It's fine now. I was there two minutes ago. I'd try again if I were you.

Oh, I am so glad I make weekly backups of all my submitted limericks; if this turns out to be something truly catastrophic and Virge can't recover the limerick database, I'll be the first one ready to (re)submit when we finally do come back up.

1.) I may have misspoken earlier. I had wanted to reassure everyone that the database had not been lost because we definitely DO make back-ups. What I neglected to say was that these back-ups are not made instantaneously, so some of the most recent work may have been lost. Virge advises me that there may (repeat [i]may[/i]) be ways to retrieve lost data but, in any case, it wouldn't be a bad idea for everyone to think back over what they've submitted in the past week or so and rewrite it, if possible, and store it somewhere for resubmission later if needed.

2.) Why are there so many "anonymous" postings here? Is no one registering and signing on?

3.) This crash will have the obvious effect of kicking the hell out of Chris Doyle's WEAP spotlight. Gee, CD, that's too bad! (kidding) As soon as we get back up and reestablish our equilibrium, we'll resume the WEAP schedule anew starting with CD's spotlight.

4.) And on an unrelated note, it used to be that the police in Illinois could not stop a motorist simply because he or she was not wearing a seatbelt but that a ticket for this infraction could be written if the motorist was pulled over for some other legitimate reason and wasn't buckled up. I discovered, the hard way, that this is no longer the case. My stats:

...A.) Seat belt use with my grandkids in the car -- absolutely 100% for everyone
...B.) Seat belt use when I'm alone, driving three miles or more -- probably 95%
...C.) Seat belt use when I'm along on a short trip -- I won't lie; I usually blow it off.

No excuse, no, and I really am a believer in belting up. The above figures are strictly my pre-ticket stats and I'm now getting back into the habit of 100% seatbelt use, [i]every[/i] trip, [i]every[/i] time. I strongly suggest you all join me in this.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to get into my car, put my seatbelt on, and drive about two miles to pay my $55 fine.

Why are my italics tags not working? There is a list of HTML tags available here (much greater in number than than those in our Forum, in fact) and "[i]" is listed among them. Plus I notice that someone earlier successfully BFed a word.

In a similar vein to mark (above) I've seen some horrors resulting from not wearing seat belts, mainly ruptured aortas and livers in otherwise undamaged bodies (impact with steering column).

I've always used one, even before they became compulsory in the UK. I now run a Volvo, it flashes a red light and makes a furious ticking sound if the ignition is switched on without the driver's belt being in its slot. OK, you can plug it in and sit on it if you really have a death wish....

I am amazed at how much I am missing Oedilf, especially since the last few weeks have been so busy that I haven't had much time to log in. I have barely managed to keep up with my activity list, let alone post anything extra. But now I find I am suffering withdrawal. I miss you all. Virge, you are awesome, hang in there and don't let the pressure get to you. Use whatever time frame you need to, and don't put your health at risk by stressing out too much.

Maybe it's just me, but this strikes me a similar to when the power goes out in the summer. You wait for a bit to see whether it's going to be just a brief interruption before you can get back to your normal affairs, but then you give up, and wander outside. Then, in the exodus of neighbors, you start chatting with people you intend to talk to but never seem to have the time.

Not that any of us is usually at much of a loss for words, but there is that sense of displaced people reconnecting here. Kind of cool in a way.

On hardware, we might have to splurge
(Need help? Let us know, Chris and Virge)
For the motherboard's bent
And the memory's rent
And the hard drive's in need of a dirge.

I'm serious about L2, by the way- I'm there's anything we can do, be it donations or technical stuff (ok, I'm not going to be of much help there, but I know people who might be) just let us know.

If somebody (Chris? Virge?) provides a Paypal account email address for donations, I'd be more than happy to send in a donation. And I'm sure many other members would feel the same way.

Let's face it -- time is money -- and if we had to pay someone to do what Virge is doing, it would be very costly. So I think some payment to Virge is appropriate. Moreover, perhaps donations could help fund some additional disk hardware that would mirror the current hardware, so that if this ever happens again, the restoration process would be much easier and faster.

I'm still slogging away.

There are a number of things that have been slowing me down:
- the fact that it takes a couple of hours to upload the limerick database backup, and a couple more for the forum
- uploading the limerick database backup twice and still haven't solved a UTF-8 -> ISO-8859-1 character encoding mismatch in the backup
- aborting the upload of the forum backup half way through by mucking with the network configuration while it was uploading... d'oh.
- finding exactly what settings were working for PHP with the limerick database code, and how the new defaults for PHP5 won't work with phpBB
- learning how to set the host/user/db permissions on MySQL... installing phpMyAdmin... and then getting confused about why I couldn't give phpMyAdmin permission to access the database. Sometimes I can be a bit slow.

You'll be pleased to know that I can now see a database of 37,825 limericks on the server's new disk. It's not yet ready to go live.

I should sleep now.

I've belatedly sorted out an OpenID login to say onya, Virge. From the AE side of things I can report that fortunately there hadn't been a lot of STCing in the week prior to the crash, so we shouldn't have too much catching up to do there.

Gee, speedy, I'd say we (that is, mostly you) had done quite a bit recently, although I'd say the bulk of that was maybe March 1-4. We did tail off again March 5-7. I guess it depends on how frequently the database was backed up (weekly? daily?).
