Vindicated! Weight as a measure of health may be misguidedI remember getting a heart echocardiogram, and learning that I was quite fit- in fact, they had problems getting my heart rate up enough to get a good reading. Several studies from researchers at the Cooper Institute in Dallas have shown that fitness — determined by how a person performs on a treadmill — is a far better indicator of health than body mass index. In several studies, the researchers have shown that people who are fat but can still keep up on treadmill tests have much lower heart risk than people who are slim and unfit.
In December, a study in The Journal of the American Medical Association looked at death rates among 2,600 adults 60 and older over 12 years. Notably, death rates among the overweight, those with a B.M.I. of 25 to 30, were slightly lower than in normal weight adults. Death rates were highest among those with a B.M.I. of 35 or more.
But the most striking finding was that fitness level, regardless of body mass index, was the strongest predictor of mortality risk. Those with the lowest level of fitness, as measured on treadmill tests, were four times as likely to die during the 12-year study than those with the highest level of fitness. Even those who had just a minimal level of fitness had half the risk of dying compared with those who were least fit.
During the test, the treadmill moved at a brisk walking pace as the grade increased each minute. In the study, it didn’t take much to qualify as fit. For men, it meant staying on the treadmill at least 8 minutes; for women, 5.5 minutes. The people who fell below those levels, whether fat or thin, were at highest risk. Yep, that makes me feel good. I might be a bit pudgy, but I am metabolically healthy, and relatively fit. |

i really want to write it down I really want to write all this down....i find myself in a rather emotional state today, like some sort of goddamned emo...an emo... i really wanna write all this down...cuz everything happend really fast and i dont know how to explain much of it...i can defend it of course, my newfound lack of faith...but i can defend anything i hold dear...yet...for some reason, i dont doubt that i am correct this time...there were always doubts with god... I really wanna write all this down, and do so intelligently, unlike the last one, which looked like a kid with ADD got a hold to it...but this isnt the time is it and i really want to know why in the hell i cant turn syncronized swimming off.... Feedback please! As a perpetual resident of the "friend zone" in high school, I'm really not sure that I'm doing this scene properly. Granted, they're younger than high school (more middle school / junior high) and dating isn't quite the same after zombies have eaten most of the world, but does this work for y'all? ( Awkward date )Do the voices/diction sound right to you for two kids who are about to turn 13 and join the world of adults? I'm also puzzling over title ideas...I just had one pop into my head, but don't know if it's good or not, especially since I haven't read the book it's spoofing. "Love in the Time of Zombies." Su Shi (1036-1101), también conocido como Su Dongpo, era un ávido estudiante de budismo.
a menudo hablabba del budismo con su Maestro Zen Foyin. Vivían cada uno a un lado del río. un día Su Dongpo se sintió inspirado y escribió un poema:
inclino mi cabeza al cielo dentro del cielo

Su Dongpo estaba diciendo que había alcanzado tal nivel espiritual que esto no podía afectarle. Impresionado por sí mismo, Su Dongpo envió un sirviente a llevar el poema al Maestro Foyin, seguro de que también quedaría impresionado. Cuando Foyin lo leyó, enseguida vio que era un tributo a Buda y una declaración de refinamiento espiritual. sonriendo, escribió "pedo" en el manuscrito y se lo devolvió a Su Dongpo.
Su Dongpo, esperando cumplidos, al ver "pedo" escrito, entró en cólera: "Cómo se atreve a insultarme así? Ese viejo monje! deberá darme muchas explicaciones!"
indignadísimo, se apresuró a pedir una barca para ir a reclamar una disculpa.

«Россия, считает Райс, в ходе конфликта с Грузией продемонстрировала, что «может применить подавляющее военное превосходство в регионе, чтобы разгромить своего малого соседа». Кроме того, отметила госсекретарь, «никому не нужна российская стратегическая авиация, летающая вдоль берегов Америки».
«Откровенно говоря, Россия не может иметь двух вещей одновременно. Она не может действовать так, как действовала в годы “холодной войны”, когда существовал Советский Союз, и в то же время рассчитывать, что с ней будут обходиться как с ответственным партнером». Между тем российский министр подчеркнул, что президент РФ Дмитрий Медведев, как и лидеры непризнанных республик Южной Осетии и Абхазии, подписали документ именно в таком варианте». Эта преамбула играла существенную роль, поскольку из неё вытекало, что РФ не является стороной конфликта, но играет роль посредника как и Франция. «Формально, Саакашвили вообще ничего совместно не подписывал. Соглашение, которое при посредничестве Саркози подписала Россия, Абхазия и Южная Осетия, и соглашение с вычеркнутой преамбулой, которое подписал Саакашвили — два разных документа", — заявил "Сегодня" директор Фонда эффективной политики Кирилл Танаев. Депутат Госдумы Алексей Митрофанов тоже согласен, что с юридической стороны тексты — разные. С политической же точки зрения исчезнувшая преамбула — театральный жест Саакашвили. "В преамбуле подчеркивается, кто договорился, кто принудил клиента к подписанию документа — это Россия и Франция, — сказал Митрофанов "Сегодня". — А Саакашвили не хочет это так воспринимать и считает, что это союз равных"». И вчера в этом важном для дипломатии вопросе РФ отступила, как всегда. «16 августа в середине дня в "Бочаров Ручей" пришла копия документа, под которым накануне вечером под бдительным контролем госсекретаря США Кондолизы Райс поставил свою подпись Михаил Саакашвили. До того там уже стояло два автографа - президентов непризнанных республик Эдуарда Кокойты и Сергея Багапша. В "Бочаровом Ручье" в это время как раз шло заседание Совбеза, но вопрос о том, подписывать документ или нет, даже не ставился - как следует из самого документа, Россия фигурирует в нем в качестве посредника урегулирования, а не одной из конфликтующих сторон»

- В чем отличия? - спросили у министра "Известия".
- Полностью отсутствует вводная часть, где говорится, что президенты России и Франции поддерживают эти принципы и призывают соответствующие стороны подписаться под ними. Мы считаем, что это - неотъемлемая часть документа.
Тем не менее Медведев свою подпись поставил, чтобы не осложнять ситуацию. Теперь, как объяснил Лавров, Российские вооруженные силы будут покидать территорию Южной Осетии. Но только по мере того, как будут приниматься дополнительные меры безопасности для республики.
Гарантами и посредниками в этом процессе будут Евросоюз и ОБСЕ (ЕС, кстати, свою подпись под "шестью принципами" уже поставил). Но нет общего ответа только на один вопрос - кто же все-таки должен исполнять функции миротворца? В "шести принципах" значится, что пока эта роль остается за Россией. Евросоюз, как показал пятничный приезд в "Бочаров Ручей" германского канцлера Ангелы Меркель, готов поспорить». Как-то трудно сомневаться, что вскоре путинцы подпишутся и под выводом из Абхазии и Осетии российских миротворцев. Сейчас Евросоюз и США торгуются, кем их заменить. P.S.
«Министры иностранных дел 26 стран НАТО по итогам встречи в Брюсселе пришли к выводу, что Россия нарушила международное право, вторгшись на территорию Грузии. Об этом после встречи сообщил министр иностранных дел Великобритании Дэвид Милибэнд.
Он отметил, что по данному вопросу все участники пришли к единому мнению и опроверг появившиеся в СМИ сообщении об отсутствии единой позиции у стран - участниц НАТО в отношении действий России в ходе вооруженного конфликта.

Rebellion: You're doing it wrong ginmar and naamah_darling both turned my eyes (and, now aching head) to this list of 'ideas for alternate rebellion' from a 'dialectical behavioral therapy' site. Apparently this therapy combines cognitive and behavioral therapy into some sort of muddled aggregate that- if this list is to be judged- probably makes it worse for the 'rebel'. Some examples: Give an honest response instead of a polite one
Speak out rather than staying quiet
Dress in a countercultural style [whose culture?]
Challenge statements when you disagree
Choose mediocrity rather than drama [but drama is rebellious, not mediocrity!]
Drop out of things that are not effective
Follow your passion rather than your expectation
Wallow in creativity [does that include, mud, jello, and pudding?]
Give yourself time to play
Explore [what?]
Say no to family when they ask for a favor
Leave the light on all day
Get a butterfly tattoo [How is a butterfly tattoo rebellious?] This isn't the complete list, but you can see by my [bracketed] observations that this is about as far from 'rebellious' as I am from being a cat. Someone on Naamah's journal commented that these are what 'pearl-clutchers' would see as rebellious. Funny- I've been running into that term a lot today. Pearl Clutcher:
An uptight person, usually but not always female, usually but not always of conservative mores, who reacts with shock, feigned or otherwise, at other people's violations of decorum, propriety, morality, and so forth.
Someone got up at the PTA meeting and suggested the school hand out condoms to teenagers. The pearl clutchers in the audience nearly went into cardiac arrest. I can't be a 'pearl clutcher'- I am more liable to laugh at something outside the box, and I don't own any pearls. The thing that clangs about this list of 'rebellious' things is how truly unoriginal these suggestions are- and juvenile, as well. And how not-rebellious. This seems more defiant than rebellious, and a flaccid sort of defiance, at that. "Rebellious" isn't a good word, either, because actual rebellion is more an act of desperation than deliberate oppositional defiance. And defiance is totally different in scope and intent from self-actualization or confident individualism- which can be seen as 'rebellious' in the eyes of 'pearl-clutchers'. Here are some examples of the difference between the 'rebellion' suggested above, and actual self-confident and individualistic behavior: -A defiant person will wear flip-flops in church. A confident individual will wear RocketDogs. -A defiant person will get a butterfly tattoo. A confident individual won't have any tattoos at all. -A defiant person will totally trash their home. A confident individual will have a brilliantly messy desk, and a floor you can eat off of. -A defiant person might become a Satanist for shock value. A confident individual will hang out with Satanists for the intellectual stimulation. -A defiant person is always looking over their shoulders to see how people react to their various and mostly self-destructive acts of defiance. They desperately want to be seen as 'cool'. A confident and self-actualized individual doesn't give a hoot about who is watching, and might find it immensely funny to see people trying to copy their moves- and failing. If they even notice. They're totally cool- and they don't care. -A defiant person is insecure and desperately wants to be someone else. A confident individual is comfortable in their own skin. This is where the list above achieves 'epic fail'. It advocates totally lame acts of rebellion, and doesn't advocate the cultivation of the sort of internal compass and self-actualization that permits people to live outside the box without fear. And I think that is the crux of it- fear. Fear does not rule those who are confident in themselves. |

Population paradox I am always willing to learn new things, or correct the course or content of what I understand. So, this article about the 'population paradox' definitely got my attention: Population paradox: Europe's time bombThe old saw about poverty causing large numbers of children is incorrect- it is lack of female education and living in a fundementalist religious culture that is the critical element. When women are educated, they have fewer children, no matter what the religious context. I had to drill down a bit to get to those pertinent parts, but that was interesting. ( Read more... ) |
