Does anybody has a rec for a good Ryan/Marissa Fic? It's really hard to find someone doing them justice esp. when writing NC-17 and since I love the pair of them I'd love to read a good fic :-).

2:57 am - Summer by Elizabeth

acari
[info]uhmidont has written an utterly brilliant story. This is the most convincing Summer I have read to this day. Her voice is spot on.

Ryan? No, I don't, like, hate him or anything.

Tone? So I should have what, sung what I just said? Whatever. Ryan's ok. Seth is really into him so, you know. He's around. Ryan lives with Seth 'cause of Seth's dad. He's a lawyer for poor people and does stuff like go surfing. He's so totally lame. Seth is kinda like him and sometimes -- ok, sometimes I look at him and I think 'oh my god, Summer, if people saw you.' But then like, the squirrel. And the poem. I told you about that, right? No one remembered that stuff. But he did. And he has this way of looking at me. Like ok, sometimes I think that even if I got fat or scarred in an accident or whatever, Seth would still look at me the same way. I mean, he's a total loser but. Nobody looks at me like he does.

10:23 pm - Sorry for the x-post

alil_buff
I don't know if this is allowed here, so feel free to delete this if you'd like. I just figured since you guys like writing fiction, I could get some good roleplayers for my new OC RPG :-D

Role playing combined with "The OC", what more could you ask for? At [info]oc_rpg, we still need plenty of characters. If you're interested, check out the community info and e-mail me at bethhq@yahoo.com.

12:41 pm - Rec: "A Home for Guido," by [info]joyfulgirl41

sydni_64
[info]joyfulgirl41 has created yet another utterly enjoyable (and utterly hot) O.C. fic, titled "A Home for Guido." It's Seth/Ryan, Ryan POV. The interaction between Seth and Ryan is playful and sexually charged, and her characterization for both of the boys approaches perfection. The fic is a fun, quick read, full of sweet little bits like this:

Ryan laughed a little. In the short time he'd been here, he'd grown to enjoy Seth's ramblings quite a lot. He found himself losing video games just to hear Seth gloat, or postponing answering a question, just to see how long Seth would keep talking, to see what he would say.

7:12 pm - Rec: "Theories of Momentary Perfection," by [info]serialkarma

sydni_64
When an author tells you something true about a character, something you didn't already know and something the show's writers couldn't have told you, you are experiencing exactly what this whole fanfiction thing is all about.

I just had that experience, reading "Theories of Momentary Perfection" by [info]serialkarma. It's a Ryan POV with a Seth/Ryan bent. [info]serialkarma reveals to the reader Ryan's probing mind, his penchant for the philosophical, the snippets of geek inside of him that make him understand Seth so well. Great use here is made of what we learn about Ryan's intelligence in the pilot, and the theories over which Ryan mulls ring very true as the thoughts of an especially bright teenager.

So people, who are caught up in the movements of time, can't ever be perfect. They change, they move, what was perfect one moment is completely wrong the next. Moments, though, are like soap bubbles: Perfect for the instant they exist, and when they pop they leave behind nothing but a perfect memory.

This fic makes you slow down, makes you simply *be* there with Ryan in his quiet, thoughtful moment. Once this mood has been established, Seth enters the picture, and you understand what Ryan is thinking when he smiles bemusedly at Ryan's babbling at the end of "The Gamble." [info]serialkarma doesn't simply throw Seth into the mix; what is portrayed here is truly Seth through the lens of Ryan's perspective.

He starts in as tongue-trippingly fast as always, something about Playstation and it being his turn to kick Ryan's ass at Medal of Honor: Tom Clancy's Licensing Empire Strikes Back or whatever, but stops abruptly, perhaps realizing that there's a time for babbling, and there's a time for quiet contemplation of the nature of the universe.

Go quickly and read "Theories of Momentary Perfection" by [info]serialkarma.

6:42 pm - Rec: "So Not," by [info]jfc013

sydni_64
[info]jfc013 employs a sparkling wit and keen understanding of Seth Cohen in her fic, "So Not." This fic is a Seth POV, wherein Seth waxes defensive about his sexuality, particularly in the light of Luke's insistence on calling him a queer.

What I like about this fic, aside from the fact that it features spot-on characterization and it's funny as hell, is that it has such an easy fit into the canon we've seen thus far. And we get Seth's introspection regarding his feelings about the other characters, particularly Ryan, while expertly avoiding oversentimentality. The thoughts are jumpy, mimicking real thought processes, without losing the reader. And did I mention that it's very funny?
It made me want to put on a cape and tights and fly in and rescue him, and let me point out: Batman? *Really* not queer.

8:34 pm - "Torture," by [info]canofvegetables

sydni_64
Truth be told, I've been in slash fandom a while and there's not much PWP that does a damned thing for me, anymore. Compound that with my suspicion that to write Ryan/Seth sex this early in the game is to jump the gun, and I should be politely ignoring this NC-17, Ryan/Seth PWP, right?

Wrong. Upon reading Kat's statement that writing this fic had been torturous, I began to sense something remarkable was afoot and I was not disappointed. The fic is smut--pure, unadulterated smut--raised to a higher level by Kat's ability to turn a phrase and her subtle yet lethal sense of humor. Her Seth is charming, witty, sexually frustrated and a tad self-conscious, yet defensively self-possessed and snarky. Her Ryan is bemused by Seth's antics, interested in pleasing him, confident and deliciously sexy, and all this is to say that her characterization is dead on. The dialogue and the sexiness of it all had me riveted to my computer screen from beginning to end. How could I not be, with gems like this?

Ryan was a good kisser, a *great* kisser, but he couldn't help suspecting that Ryan was holding back on him. There was too much control, too much finesse. Seth felt frantic and sloppy and, god, fucking horny. He wanted to be wiping the spit off his chin, not be on the receiving end of some PG-13, WB-soap-opera kiss.

I think one of the reasons this fic works so well is that Kat ([info]canofvegetables) refrains from pinpointing the action within the O.C. timeframe. It rings true and believable partly because the reader is free to fit the fic into her own conception of the O.C. 'verse, and we don't have to believe that Seth and Ryan have already slept together during the timeframe we've seen in canon.

I'm loathe to quote more sumptuously smutty bits of this fic because so much hangs on the pace and flow of Kat's fic. I don't smoke, but I think I need a cigarette after Torture.

I wanted to rec the drabble The Babes of OC by [info]skylark97. Despite the goofy title, the fic is short but incredibly introspective and poignant, expressing a lot of insight within a short amount of writing. I could really hear Ryan's voice ringing clear here, expressing his ability of keen, quiet observation that life experience has given him, even injecting a touch of bitterness underneath his awareness of what seperates him from Seth and Marissa.

An excerpt:

Explaining his life and what it’s been like up to this point to them is like pulling aside a few toddlers to teach them about pornography. Despite all these rich kids’ posturing, despite their vices and the reckless stupidity they engage in, he imagines that inside they’re all as uncertain and as uncomfortable as Seth.

Seth’s just big enough to actually own up to it.

Beautifully written and definitely worth a look.

2:59 am - Rec: "Gamers, Skaters, and Boys Who Ride BMX Bikes," by [info]hackthis

sydni_64
[info]hackthis has captured the quirk and spunk of Seth's voice, recreating him masterfully in the fic, "Games, Skaters, and Boys Who Ride BMX Bikes."

One of the most interesting touches here is the implicit comparison of Ryan to other toys Sandy gave his son and later took away when Seth grew too attached to them:

Seth used to play D & D, but he got a little too involved, so his dad took away the game and bought him a bike instead. Seth never really got into the bike though. He never had anyone to ride with who would stand on the back of his bike and laugh in his ear. There was no one around to watch him mess up his tricks, and when he went down to the boardwalk, the bikers all hung out together, staring at the rich boy strangely.

After several paragraphs of Ryan POV, we are treated to dialogue between Seth and Ryan. Appropriately, Ryan is allowed to speak mostly through his actions, as you'll see.

This short fic is a robust blend of romance, humor and poor-little-rich-boy angst that comes together to draw the reader in and teach her something about the world of The O.C.. Go on and read "Gamers, Skaters, and Boys Who Ride BMX Bikes".

2:14 am - Rec: "Wants and Needs," by [info]joyfulgirl41

sydni_64
Happily for the writers, The O.C. in two episodes has already provided us with round, interesting, sensitively carved characters to spark the imagination. [info]joyfulgirl41 has made fine use of this fact in creating a beautiful POV fic, "Wants and Needs." The fic consists of two sections; first, she deals with Seth's POV, and then Ryan's. The voices here are so rich and authentic that one can hardly imagine their inner lives being much different from the manner in which they are portrayed in this fic. This author manages to be sensitive yet not maudlin, and has clearly taken her task of revealing the characters' wants and needs very seriously. Especially nice here is how both POVs start out with thoughts on Ryan's mother, and the abandonment that brings him to Orange County and into Seth's life. Without that painful experience, of course, the boys' paths may never have crossed, and in [info]joyfulgirl41's fic, they are both acutely aware of this.

In the course of roughly two weeks, it's already become fanon that if Marissa is a version of Seth (and canon points to this), then if Ryan is attracted to Marissa, surely he will be attracted to Seth for similar reasons, and vice versa. The way [info]joyfulgirl41 hears Seth's thoughts on this issue rings stunningly true, perhaps because they're the same vaguely bitter thoughts many of us have had about that fabulously attractive boy/girl who turns out to be a good person, much to our chagrin:

It's not really Ryan's fault. Seth doesn't blame him. After all, he would much rather hang out with Marissa than him too. So he can't blame Ryan for ignoring him when she's around. He can't quite help feeling a little hurt by it, though. He can't quite keep the jealousy out of his voice, but he doesn't think that Ryan really notices.

Marissa could at least have the decency to be the vapid whore that Seth always suspected she might be. It's only fair for pretty people to be vapid. It's the only way people like Seth have a chance. But she's not. She's cool and pretty and turns out to be sort of nice, flashes of depth showing through her Prada exterior.

Indeed, the reader gets to understand Marissa quite a bit better through the eyes of Ryan, as well:

Ryan aches all over and his lungs burn from the smoke. The handcuffs are surprisingly cold as they close around his wrists, and he can't bring himself to look at Seth. He's let him down, blown everybody's cover, and he can't quite bear to see how far he's fallen in Seth's eyes.

Marissa looks somewhere between bewildered and excited. Like this is just the sort of thing she was hoping for when she befriended Ryan, but now that it's happening, she doesn't know what to do with it.

[info]joyfulgirl41 hits on something that is underplayed in canon: Ryan seems the type to be very much aware of the expectations placed on him by his new associates in the O.C. Both Seth and Marissa need him to be their escape from the "Newport beach bubble." Seth is suffering from his ostracism from the teen social scene, while Marissa is suffering from her success on it. Sandy, meanwhile needs someone to save:

Sandy Cohen is someone Ryan doesn't really hate, but he's someone to be wary of. Ryan is always suspicious of people who are too nice. He can never figure out their angle and he wonders what kind of redemption Sandy is seeking by reaching out to him.

A lovely first outing in this fandom by the author, and I think you will not be disappointed. Go read "Wants and Needs".
