oicontest #10: faceless
I return! School's out, and free time is once more in abundance.

You chose your next icontest, and it's: Faceless.

Contest details are all in the cut.

The theme restriction is fairly simple - your icon must show part of a person, but may not show any part of the person's face.

Everything else is up to you - adding text is fine, so is making them textless. Textures, brushes, masks, etc are all fine.

Submit your entries to this post (comments are screened), giving me both the image (the < img src = "" > tag) and the URL (http://www.____.__/_____.___).

You may enter up to 2 icons.

For a change, this one actually won't be all decided by the mods - like Jia's contests, it'll be all voting done by you guys, the members, and mods will just get choices.

This may be a permanent change, or it may go back to normal next time, depending on how it works out. The voting categories will most likely be somewhat different, but that'll be determined once I see the scope of entries.

If you have any questions/problems, please comment. :)

Also, considering that the winners will be determined by popular vote and not by the designers alone, all entries should be new, and not posted anywhere until voting has ended. Also, considering the importance of icon anonymity on the voting post, userpics are not an acceptable place to host your entries. There are lots of free hosts: try Photobucket, for example. Any icons that are found posted elsewhere before voting ends will be disqualified.

Submit all entries in comments to this post (please, don't submit as a comment to another comment) by 11PM EST Tuesday, July 18th. Thanks!

If you haven't already, go and vote on oicontest #9, voting closes soon!

is an ear considered part of the face? what about a teensy part of a chin with a neck and shoulder?

Ear - yes, that's part of a face.
Teensy bit of chin - depends on what "teensy" is; show me the base?

So, a question. What's the deal with bases? What is cool to use and what isn't? I don't mean this in an artistic sense, but when I'm trolling google images for bases (or things to make into bases) I'm unsure what is acceptable for use.

For example, I think this picture is moving and amazing, and fits what I want to do:

http://www.photo.net/photo/pcd1638/date-rape-4.3.jpg

However, I notice it has a copyright on it (I also notice it expires in 1993.) Can I use it? What's the general rule? When can we use images as bases, and when can't we? Help!

(Additionally, I went back through years (or what felt like years) of your icons, and I can't believe how far and wide they've spread. Many of the ones I have and love - or my friends have and use all the time - come from here. Yay you.)

Not an answer to your question, but just for general information: If something has a copyright notice on it with two years, such as the example you've given (1990-1993), the first year is the creation date and the second year is the last year it was modified/updated, not an expiration date.

Here's a good source, practically legalese-free, to learn about copyright issues specifically on the Web.

Does the base have to be photographic, or could it be part of a person from a painting vel sim?

I'm going to go ahead and say it doesn't have to be photographic. An icon like the one you're using now would be acceptable to me with the contest's rules, but a very abstract painting would not. So there's a line there, but I think paintings would be allowed. Final say on this goes to [info]enriana though.

Can it be the back part of a person? Like their head, not the face but the back part, or the full out line of a person from behind?

Is it a bad thing I immediately recognise the photo the second is from? :) I'd say that one's definitely okay, and the first probably okay. Final word from Ariel when it comes.

I'm assuming that nudity is acceptable for this challenge? I couldn't see anything about it in your userinfo

Feel free to disqualify the second one - I know it's somewhat toeing the line of "faceless". It makes me giggle, so I figured I'd share it. :)
