Fall Break?
what do people do over "fall recess"? it's only a week, so my parents are wondering if it's possible (better?) for me to stay on campus... since i'll be going home for thanksgiving. that's another thing: what to students do for thanksgiving?

People do really different things. I know some people last year who didn't have the means to go home for fall break hung around. The dorms do stay open, but you have to fend for yourself as far as food goes.

Lots of people take trips (not necessarily home) during Fall Break too. For instance, last year I spent the week in Illinois visiting my boyfriend even though I am from PA. It's just a nice week to take a break and do whatever strikes your fancy.

As for Thanksgiving, I know, again, some people stayed on campus but it is pretty common to travel that weekend as well.

So it's really up to you - some people love having a week to themselves while others can't wait to get away from the Oberlin Bubble.

My experience was that most people went home for both breaks freshman year, then later on, there started being more people who stayed. The other thing to keep in mind is that depending where you live, it can be a real pain to get home for Thanksgiving-- you only have four actual days off, and the first is Thanksgiving itself. And some profs do insist on running regular class on the Wednesday before.

Most people do not stay on campus for fall break. Some go home, some go visit friends, some go on trips. I was on campus for a few days in the middle of fall break once though, and there were some people around. But you'll probably meet someone you can go home with for a week by fall break.

I always go home (to California) for Thanksgiving. What I do is leave Tuesday after classes. That means I only miss one day of class (not ideal, but okay), and I have 5 nights, 4 days at home.

I stay for breaks.

I'd rather do my homework peacefully and hang out with my friends who stay in Oberlin than do the 7-hour drive home and be bored with my cats. How boring a break is depends on how many people you want to hang out with go home. If you think you'll be missing your parents (or their cooking) terribly by then, go, but if you live far away and are good at entertaining yourself at school, stay. It's fun.

My experience is that people don't go home for Thanksgiving unless they live close, and there are still plenty of people around that weekend. CDS does a Thanksgiving meal with turkey and tofurkey and standard accompanying dishes.

there is no food provided over breaks at Oberlin, though some stay, I have, and found it very peaceful. relax, and focus on the now, not the two months hereafter.

It's a firstie, lunas. Let it worry - what did you do the summer before you got to Oberlin? I watched the Olympics and compulsively did jigsaws to burn off nervous energy.
*asexual hugs and kisses*
I really miss you.

Last thanksgiving (my first yeaer at Oberlin) I stayed in Oberlin, made a really good pumpkin pie, ate pasta with my next door neighbor, and went to see the Incredibles at the Apollo. It rocked SO MUCH. I think most people go home, though.

I can never decide whether to go home for Thanksgiving. I've gone every year so far, but that's mostly because it means a lot to my parents. It's such a short time (unless you skip 1-2 days of classes, which people do) that it's kind of hard if you live far away. On the other hand, Thanksgiving is a pretty important holiday for a lot of families, so it's a decision you have to make for yourself.

As for fall break, it's a week (really 9 days) to go do whatever you want. If you're homesick, go home. If you're sick of Oberlin, take an exciting trip. If you want to relax, stay on campus, catch up on work. You can have fun whatever you do.
