So I was just notified of admission... Does anyone care to MSN with me? I have a bunch of questions to ask.

impmon0079@hotmail.com
(Yes, my MSN address is a name of a cartoon character because it was made seven years ago)

Edit)
Apparently not a lot of people seem to do MSN. So here goes:
1) I'm thinking of deferring for a year before I enroll, for a number of reasons. Is that possible? If so, do you need to give the admissions office some valid reasons, or is it entirely your choice?
2) I'm currently digging western philosophy. But I have no one to consult when I'm stuck with the texts. Do you think the philosophy professors will reply if I question them through E-mail regarding the texts?
3) Maybe it's a bit early to be thinking about housing, but what do you think about program houses, the French house specifically? Are the residents eager to speak the language? I mean, when you wake up your roommate in the morning, do you say "leve-toi" or "wake up?" Is there a lot of conversation going on?
4) I'm Asian, but I would like to dine in the Kosher-Halal Co-op since I'm interested in Muslim and Jewish culture. Do you think it's a good idea?
5) I think I'll be visiting the campus in March or April... Do you recommend that I visit the campus on All Roads Lead To Oberlin, or any other day? I don't really like crowded tours, though.
6) How is Otaku life in Oberlin? Is the Anime club a much of a community?

People who live in glass houses don't have much of a sex life.

Hey. I'm going to be a freshie at Obie this fall, and I was wondering if anyone had any housing advice. You know things like “this is the dorm where the most people walk around naked,” “such-and-such dorm is a pit,” or “that dorm is where they found the dead body locked in the freezer.” Any help is appreciated!

Thoughts on village housing?

Thoughts on college-constructed village housing (i.e., Union Street) versus college-bought village housing (i.e., Woodland Street, various)?

I'm sure this has been hashed here before, but new houses have been bought since the last time this was discussed, and I'm sure that upkeep of Union Street has changed, too...

What complaints or positive points do you have about Union Street? What complaints or positive points do you have about your non-Union-Street village house?
(What houses have laundry?)

Super Single!

So I managed to get a super single on the first floor of Fairkid, and I have a question for anyone who has ever lived in or even been in one of them:

What the heck did you do with all the furniture?

Surely there are many great ways of organizing the space and making the most of two people's worth of desks and beds and such. What sort of inventive/cool things have you done (or seen done) with it all?

I've lived in Fairkid before, so I know what the rooms are like, but I'm curious to know what people have done with their super singles.

two questions

1) How are the dorms and campus as a whole wired for internet?
2) How does the school assign advisors to first-years who didn't indicate a preference. Do they assign us to our freshman seminar teacher, or do they assign to someone in a department in which we have interest?

Any insight is helpful. Thank you!

Thoughts on 4th floor Noah triples? I checked the memories, but there's nothing specific. Also, where'd they put the SciFi Hall? Thanks!

Barnard

Can anyone tell me anything about the setup of Barnard's divided doubles? Specifically room 205, perhaps? I never saw one when I visited, so I want to have some idea of how I should plan to organize it. Thank you!

Firelands?

Hi, I'm moving into a studio in Firelands this fall, and I was wondering what the furnishings are like there? I know there will be a bed, desk, etc., and I know there is a bathroom and kitchen included, but what kind of appliances are in the kitchen? And, is there usually enough room for an extra chair? I'm completely clueless, no one I asked has ever been inside of Firelands. Thanks so much for your replies!

housing problem

So I have a problem. The girl who was supposed to be my roommate in Burton next semester was on the waitlist for co-ops. She just now got into Keep, decided she would rather live there, and now I don’t have a roommate and I don't know what to do.

I just wanted to know- has anyone here ever been in this situation, or know someone who has been? I would really appreciate hearing about someone's experience with this- what ended up happening? Or if anyone is an RA or a housing expert, I could definitely use your advice. I would like to stay where I’ve been placed (Burton)... I really don't want to relocate. Is there a good chance that I'll be reassigned, or will resed just give me a random roommate? I’m a sophmore by the way, I don’t know if that means anything.

I'd also like to hear from anyone else who is in this situation right now, or anyone who is still looking for a roommate and wants to live in Burton...

yet another housing question

Being new at the whole housing lottery thing, I was wondering how good chances are for people to get into certain dorms. With a range in the mid 2000s, I am not sure if I have a chance at better dorms. Speaking of that, I was looking at the archives onto older posts about housing but they all seem a bit outdated. So I was wondering if someone could briefly comment on the conditions and community of Talcott, South, Fairchild, Burton, and Noah. Thanks!

more housing questions

a] what exactly is a superquad? are they hard to get?

b] if you're going into the housing lottery with a roommate of a different gender, are you guaranteed a room in one of the specified dorms? or if you don't make it are you just shit-out-of-luck?

c] speaking of roommates...resed says that for a group they average the lottery numbers - does that include roommate requests too?

thanks!

All-Gender Housing--Can someone explain what this is?

So I read the Oberlin Review articles last year, but I still don't get what all-gender housing means. Is it where members of the opposite sex can live with each other? Kind of an expansion on Gender-Mixed Dorms? I apologize for being so unaware, but I'd love an explanation. Thanks!

Downloading Music , and All-Gender Housing

Does anyone know how to download the mp3s on eRes? "Right Clicking is Forbidden". It used to work in the browser Opera, but now even that doesn't work; there is no option for downloading. How do you get that music onto your computer?

Also, does anyone know where all-gender housing is, and how many rooms are designated? Are there rooms in Talcott? Does a roommate pair of different genders have priority for these rooms over a pair with better numbers but who are the same gender? How does this stuff work? It doesn't say anywhere on resed. . . .

off campus housing

How hard is it to get an apartment or room off-campus? Is there some kind of special status you get if you're officially allowed to live off-campus by Oberlin College that you can present to landlords who then give you priority over someone who does not?

About how much per month is the average room?

Also, does anyone know about that forest green house across from Dascomb next to the parking lot behind Harkness? I feel drawn to live there...

Resed

If you are planning to have a co-ed roommate next year, can you request someone or is it done internally within each living area (I will almost definitely be in a co-op next year)?

Here's the list of opinions I've received about dorms. I've quoted people where names were given. To keep this relatively clean-looking, i'm going to disable comments -- if there's anything you want to add (and I hope there is -- we're missing a lot of dorms on here), send me an email (skendall) or comment here and i'll be glad to put it in.

for completeness, a link to The Official Housing and Dining Page

Yet another question from the high schoolers...

Hey everyone. Alright, so I'm gonna be a froshie next year (I got in ED), and have a question. I totaly want to be prepared whenever the housing request form rolls on in, and I was wondering if you could give me fun descriptions of the dorms, and generalizations of the people in them.

Because, after all, nothing is more fun than stereotyping your fellow students!!!!!!

It's all about the shower

I just receieved my residential information and I was wondering which halls offer group showers as opposed to the individual stalls? So far I know only Barrows and Harkness have them. Do any others?

Also - which dorms are convenient and good for a freshman like me, who will focus in theater and humanities?
Thanks again!
