Chem 101

Hey all! I'm trying to figure out whether I should take Chem next semester. I'm already taking Research Methods II, Cognitive Psych, Intro to Cultural Anthro and Early European History, but I can drop either of the last two.

What is the workload like? Does it depend on the teacher? How hard a course is it, and how much time do you have to put into it?

Whatever input you can give would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Questions about professors

Hi! I'm writing for a friend of mine who'll be a freshman at Oberlin in the fall. He has some questions about specific professors who are teaching first-year seminars in the fall.

Has anyone taken a course with Harlan Wilson (Politics), Stephan Mayer (Psychology), Annemarie Sammartino (History), or Marta Laskowski (Biology)? Anything to know about them? Any professors that are so awesome he should definitely take a class with sometime in his four years??

Thank you so much!

Hey there Obies, I'm looking for some class-choosing advice.

First, has any non-neuro major taken Neuropharmacology with Denny Smith? is it reasonable for a non-science major to take it? i haven't taken any biology or chemistry classes, but I've taken NSCI 201 and abnormal psych (heavy on neuro, for a psych class) and did very well in both. Is Smith receptive to non-majors taking his upper level classes? The only listed prerequisite is NSCI 201, which I have, but sometimes listed prerequisites don't really reflect what sort of background you need to do well in a course.

Next question: Has anyone taken English 399/Rhetoric and Composition 401 (Teaching and Tutoring Writing) with Podis? I will be a writing tutor in a class next semester and I have the option of taking this class or not if it doesn't fit in my schedule. I really can't put 3 credits and several papers into it, but I can do the reading and was thinking of auditing it if people recommend taking the class. Did you get a lot out of it, or did you resent having to take the class? Any opinions on the class and the professor would be appreciated.

Basically, its my senior year and Oberlin has so many great classes that I don't want to waste any credits or time taking the few classes that aren't worth it. Any suggestions are helpful. Also any "no matter what your major is you must take this class before you graduate or your 120K wasn't worth it" classes are good to know about. My recommendations? Dirty Wars and Democracy with Steve Volk, History and Structure of the English Language with Jen Bryan, Intro to Neuroscience with Lynne Bianchi, and Debating Democracy with Sonia Kruks.

does anyone have any experience with Sam Carrier's PSYC106 Visual Communication course? I'd appreciate any information on the class. Would it be a good choice for someone with an artistic interest?

Anyone know what the reading load is like for these classes:
Public Policy with Dawson
Marxist Analysis with Blecher
Late 19th Century American Lit
Recent America: US Since WWII

Currently these are my classes, but I don't want too much of a workload.

psych classes?

Hi Oberlin!
I'm trying to get my SS credits, and I was looking at these three classes:
Developmental Psych (W. Friedman)
Cultural Psych (S. Mayer)
Adolescence and the Transition to Adulthood (N. Darling)

Please, if you can tell me ANYTHING about either of these three classes, you will earn my eternal gratitude.
Thanks in advance! <3

I was wondering if anyone has taken any classes with Baudot. I couldn't find anything on rate my professors, and was wondering if there was anyone who had particularly good or bad experiences with her. Thanks!

Course/Professor Questions! :D :D

Hey! Course/Prof questions! If anyone could tell me anything about any of the following courses or professors, that'd be awesome.

No need for comments telling me to check RateMyProfs — I already have. I tend to get a much wider and more thoughtful range of opinions here than I do there. (Also, I ask about so many courses below that at least some of these comments will be useful to other people. I hope.)

Cinema 101 with Tess Takahashi (or anything else she's taught)?

Intro to CAST with Gina Perez?

Contemporary American Fiction with Pence? Comparative Lit with Deppman?

200-level economics courses with Cleeton (Financial Management), Kasper (Labor-Management Relations), Fernandez (Healthcare), and Kuttner (Macro)?

Also, the gamble of taking Micro with someone unknown this fall, versus with Cleeton in the spring?

Politics: Kruks for Explaining Social Power, Blecher for Political Economy of Development in Asia or Marxist Analysis of Society and Politics, and Howell for The Political Economy of Advanced Capitalism?

Public Policy with Dawson? (Oh, the things I've already heard...)

Any/all intro-level Sociology courses?

Thanks!

What do you get?

The post about paper grades has made me wonder how the average person's grades look at the end of the semester. If you're all getting B's on papers, is it really more common to get a B in a class than an A? What are you thoughts on this? Do you think grades here are fair? How do they compare to other places?

I think I remember reading somewhere the average GPA here was 3.6.

Psychology

I'm a prospective psych major, and I have a few questions. Please be kind enough to answer them!

Essentially, do Nancy Darling and Karen Sutton get unfairly bad raps? I've heard mostly bad but a few really good things about both of them, and I'm pretty interested in their areas of specialty. (Anyone reading this who has taken either Adolescence or Personality?)

Also, anyone have views on Hanna or Friemdan? I've heard conflicting things on both of them.

Can anyone comment on the differences between Neuro 201 (Bianchi/Braford) and 204 (Dennison Smith)?

I'm going to need it eventually for a psych major, and am trying to decide whether to drop my 204 and take 201 eventually, or stick with 204 now.

Thanks(?)!

Some specific questions about Psych and Math tracks; vague questions about profs in other department

Psst.

Has anyone taken any classes with Carton (particularly his economics courses), Pape (economics), Diane Miller (visiting psych), Brown-Orso (art, particularly her VisPro: Digital Video course) Harwood (particularly, Western architecture)

Now, for profs who you can tell me to check RateMyProfs (but I already did) - how are nearly everyone in the psych department (specifically, I've heard conflicting things about Darling and Mayer)? Is Dawson really worth his reputation? Are White and/or Dhingra good professors, or should I wait for a better prof to come if I'm considering intro sociology? What about the other two eco profs teaching Econ 101, Kasper and Zinser?

And for math - at this point in time, I'm not sure of whether I want to major in math, but I'm enjoying Calc II enough (...don't hurt me!) that I feel like continuing - what's the best course to continue with? The math department seems to recommend 220 (Discrete), but 231 (Multivariable) just fits so much more nicely into my schedule...

Same question for psych, actually. What's a good way to continue psych after 100, tentatively for a major?

(Thanks!)
