A Less Incompetant Reslife?
I got this email from Senate:

It will be held:

Last year around housing time there was interest in mixed-gender rooming, which is now an option in Noah only (and co-ops). This is something I fully support, and I know that others agree. We should be able to live with whomever we want. When I was trying to figure out the specifics of Reslife's rooming policy last year, I spoke with Kevin Williams, who told me that they were discussing the possibility of making Talcott mixed-gender. Come and voice your support for this idea, keep it on the minds of Reslife officials and let them know that this is something students want.

As a trans guy who is trying to figure out why the hell ResLife put me in a room with two girls, I support that--though if Talcott is going to be gender neutral, they should open it to freshmen, too. I'm definitely coming to the meeting.

And I'm cooking dinner. Phooey.
Um. Tell them I think it's cool too?

Would it be mandatorily mixed gender?

No, definitely not! It only means that when we choose our roommates for next year, we could live with someone of another gender. Nobody would have to do it. Moreover, I'm nearly certain that if, for example you're a guy without a roommate, Reslife would assign you another guy to live with, not matter if you're in a mixed-gender dorm.
Kevin Williams (who was very in favor of this) said that it would only be possible for dorms with no first-years, and certainly incoming students would not be assigned to live with another gender. (Except in the case of transgender students, as marlinadietrich said, which is something Reslife should change.)

can someone ask if they're running the lottery assuming that they've got 150 extra on-campus spots from the "stevenson apartments", or if everything is just like last year, with juniors in union st. and seniors off campus?

seniors are not guaranteed off campus.
but they are not even planning to break ground on the stevenson apartments for quite a while. don't know if it'll be next year or later than that, but they aren't even pretending they'll be ready for next fall. the number of on-campus beds should not change from this year to next.

Furthermore, the erection of the new residence hall does not necessarily mean more on-campus spots. Not right away, at least. From what I have heard, they do plan on housing people but the new spots give them room to totally clear out another dorm (lets say noah because thats what resed mentions alot) and rennovate it. Therefore, the complete number of available on campus rooms won't change for a while. It will steadily increase.

And the original plan was completely scrapped anyway. It will take sometime before the new res hall is built.

Could someone also ask whether they'll be doing the lottery by semesters you've been enrolled or by credit hours? Thanks.

They are switching to the semester system.

I'd really like mixed-gender rooms in a dorm with divided doubles.

more mixed gender housing won't happen unless students make it an issue. i've been talking about it for almost 2 years and everyone inside of the department says that it has to come from the students.

i agree w/ [info]velvetoddity--there needs to be allgender rooms that are divided doubles.

just my 2 cents...
