Intro to Comparative Literature?
Anyone taken Jed Deppman's Intro to Comparative Literature? What's the class like, what do you read, how's the teacher?

I've taken it. It's amazing. Deppman is far and above the best professor I've had at Oberlin. The class itself is mostly discussion based, and pretty easy to keep up with as long as you do the reading.

I don't remember all the course material, but some included: Dai Sijie's Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress (both novel and movie), Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier, Kazuo Ishiguro's An Artist of the Floating World, and a slew of literary theory.

Just take it. Deppman is the kind of professor that everyone should take at least one class from as a student in Oberlin. But this class especially because it's the intro to his are of expertise (or rather the focal point of his several expertises.)

Both the teacher and the class are quite excellent. One of the best classes that I have taken at Oberlin.

I didn't actually end up taking the comp lit class - but I HIGHLY recommend Deppman. He's really nutty - and great.
I don't know if it's the same books as last semester (Dai Sijie - Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Ford Madox Ford - The Good Soldier, Kazuo Ishiguro - An Artist of the Floating World) but if it is, I have them to sell, if you want to buy. You can e-mail me: ella.ornstein (is this Carly from I-town? hello!)

Sorry, didn't mean to be creepy...! I just clicked on the lj name to see if the user info page had a person-name on it (LJ anonymity always seems weird to me). If you're interested in buying the books, do e-mail me - because I don't think I'll remember to check this thread again. Ta! ~Ella
