HELP
please everyone comment your favorite class you have ever taken at Oberlin. I am a senior, and-- to copy an earlier poster-- this is my last chance to take certain classes!!

okay, I'll go first for others' benefits. One of my favorite classes ever was GAWS 301: practicum in women's studies.

I'm only a second-year, but the best class that I've taken so far has been Astronomy with Dan Steinbring. Amazing class, amazing teacher.

I disagree. I had him for PHYS111 (electricity and magnetism) last semester (Ijiri was on sabbatical) and he really wasn't that great. He made mathematical blunders constantly, lost his train of thought, and generally spoke to us as if we were five. It hurt my feelings a bit.
I have, however, heard nothing but good things about Astro, so don't let this discourage anyone from taking that.

the one that stands out the most is History and Structure of the English Language with Prof. Bryan. she is a wonderful prof, and runs the class in a smooth and knowledgeable manner. if you can get in, you should take it...

My favorite class was RELG 261 - Gender Theory and the Study of Religion with Margaret Kamitsuka

Even though I can't believe I'm saying this, I also really liked Neuroscience 201.

So far my best class has been Vertebrate Structure and Evolution with Professor McCormick, but it's not offered again until Spring 07.

Con Law with Kahn was one of my favorites. I second Neuro 201 and Hist & Structure with Jen Bryan. There are some others I've loved, but it's probably not worth listing first year seminars and 300 level math classes. Oh, and consider taking a dance class.

Anything with John Olmsted in the English department. Victorian Literature is his best.

take anything Jen Bryan is teaching this semester or next...I think it's Chaucer and a seminar on Arthurian identity this, and Hist. and Structure next. she is the most amazing lecturer I have ever experienced at Oberlin, and has a magical ability to facilitate class discussion so that people ACTUALLY TALK TO EACH OTHER instead of just trying to sound smart in front of the professor. not to mention she has an incredible handle not only on her own discipline, but on the relativity of her area to modern literature/history/philosophy/etc.

I agree completely and totally. She gives a fair amoutn of work but she actually uses it in class and it's one of those where she'll beat you to death but you're begging for more at the end.

I always wonder what would happen if Jen ever found these discussions of how wonderful/fantastic/brilliant she is. Since I was going to add my own song of praise in her honor, I shall leave us with this thought to contemplate instead.

All of the best classes I have had have been with professors who are no longer a part of the oberlin community. I loved the class with DiCenzo and any Japanese literature was the best!

If you've taken Psych 100 already, take Social Psychology with Cindy Frantz, who is the awesomest professor to ever awesome. In addition to being absolutely cool, social psych is also very, very useful in everyday life.

Pam Brooks (who teaches African American Women's History and Black Feminist Thought, among other things) is absolutely fantastic both as a teacher and as a person. I consider her both a mentor and a friend.
