Cingular service
Hey guys, my name's Eli, and I'm starting my freshman year this fall. Does anybody know how good the Cingular service is? Thanks.

cingular is eh. if you can switch, verizon is much better in oberlin (and everywhere else, from my experience with both). i had cingular at first, and it doesn't work in buildings much, and you have to wander for a signal. verizon worked in my dorm, in my house, in buildings, and all across campus.

It blows. You can never use your phone in a dorm, and you frequently have shitty service outside too.

There's a post in the memories on cell phones here that might be helpful.

And hungover is definitely a mood. Drinking on a Monday night, eh? You'll fit in just fine (at least, the way things go among the people I know).

Go verizon. And also check and see if Cingular provides guarantees on service. When my sister went to college, her service (Sprint) didn't cover her area, and she was able to break contract without paying any sort of penalty.

it depends on which phone you have. Nokias work MUCH better than Motorollas (I had both kinds last year with Cingular). I'm not sure how the Samsungs or LG's work though.

How is T-Mobile? Up to par with Verizon? Better than Cingular?

Hmm, as a fellow incoming firstie, I'm glad to hear my cingular phone has at least the potential of working. Anybody tried cingular + LG phone? I think the model is C1300.

I'm also a first year, so I am speaking from my campus visit experience. I have a Siemens phone and cingular and I had perfect service, but I was only no campus for a couple of days...so I may have only seen the best. *shrug*

I use cingular with motorola

service is sub par but certainly not drawing a blank. Alot of the dorms simply don't permit service unless you curl up by the window, but alot of other buildings are fine. Never had nothing but perfect service outside though.

Anybody have any experience with Go Beyond Wireless? They offer prepaid cell phones that don't expire as long as you make a call every so often. They use the Cingular/ATT network, I think. One problem is they don't have local phone numbers everywhere (for example, they don't have 617, so anyone calling me from home would have to dial long distance). But outgoing long distance is free, and they do have phone numbers in the 440 area code. It looks like a good deal, especially if you plan to use the cell phone lightly, as I do. But I'd hope to hear about some people's experience with it before diving in.

Also, for the incoming freshmen, you should know that there are a bunch of alternatives to your cell. There are free phones all over campus, for example. And if it works as well on-campus as it does off- (hopefully someone else can answer that for me), Skype is great.

Just a thought: nobody HAS to have a cell phone. (I don't.)

Now, back in my day, we mocked the people with mobile phones.

I remember my freshman year (99-00), people would refer to 'that girl with the cell phone' and people thought it was weird that she bothered with one at a place like Oberlin. (back in the days of free spending and before the science center!)

Fortunately, the thick concrete of Mudd seemed to restrict their use there.

He he; yeah, I'm sure you're all rolling your eyes at the old guy now... :)
