Union Street Housing
Does anyone have any idea what the status of the Union Street Housing is? Do we know if it will be done? What furnishings are inside? Whether it comes with a fridge? Surprise of surprises: ResLife (Ed) is being close-lipped about it.

they're still working, but the windows are up and they're working on the inside now. As of last weekend, there was paint on the inside, but nothing else. There will be a fridge. No one knows if it'll be done in time, but they've been working every day.

There will be a bed and a desk at the minimum, and from the plans, it looked like there was a couch, coffee table, kitchen table, chairs, etc. All of the essentials will be provided, but who the hell knows if things like toaster ovens will be there.

Coming from someone who stayed in Oberlin all summer and watched the "progress"... it does not look good.

They've only just recently started putting shingles on the outside, and the last time I took a look on the inside (which was about three weeks ago) all the wood was erected, and some wiring was done, but there was no carpeting, or walls for that matter.

Word is that ResEd is going to have to give students temporary housing until the work is completed, but they're not sure how (or where) it's going to happen.

I think in the contract for all Village Housing the apartments are supposed to have (at the minimum) one fridge, and a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and internet connection for each person living there. I'm not sure if the contracts are different for Union, but they shouldn't be.

That's not true. The college has a backup plan, has notified students who will be affected. They have had this backup plan since at least April.

I would email Molly Tyson and ask about the interior of Union street. Use URGENT on the heading, it helps.

a couple of weeks ago, a friend and i walked through the construction site at night. the houses are in various states of completetion...generally, the houses set farther back from union street are more done. they had painted walls, counters and electricity, but no flooring or plumbing. houses on union street are less done. most, but not all, have siding.

i tried to walk through a couple of nights ago, around 10 o'clock, but i couldn't because there was still workmen around working inside the houses, so i figure they must be putting in serious overtime to try and get them done.

none have furnishings yet, but they look like they're going to be awesome. every bedroom and living room has a ceiling fan, the kitchens are nice a large (they'll have fridges, but they aren't there yet).

hopefully i'll be able to sneak in again...i'll give you an update if i do.

you encouraged me to go into the houses and i nearly died. i went one lonely night with some people and my shoes were ruined! i took them and i cleaned them off, but my poor poor friend...well, her shoes did not make it, so she threw them away. I saw them in the trash, cleaned them up, and now they are MINE...i am laughing like an evil munchkin. i'm coming back to oberlin soon...you'll know me when you see me...i'm the girl with the crusty shoes. i am a bandito. will we be reunited as one?

I have contacted res ed...

(multiple times...)

no response isn't helpful...

-- not the RD but still capable of utilizing elipses

ps If you did not intend to be rude with this post, sorry about the admitedly rude reply. If you are sincerely the RD, however, perhaps you could prompt Res Ed to reply to emails, to respond kindly to phone calls, and even to update the website so that they wouldn't have to superfluously spend time answering duplicative requests. It would also eliminate the need for *snide* posts.

i certainly did not mean to be rude.

i am definitely the RD.

res ed is doing their best to respond to phone calls & emails. please understand that we have many construction projects and we also receive numerous phone calls from incoming students & parents every day also.

if you have not received an email from Molly Tyson about union st, you should have nothing to worry about. :)

Sorry about being rude in that case. I know that you are all frustrated trying to give us answers, and students often demand unreasonable information. It's just incredibly frustrating when res ed representatives are rude... perhaps I am a dreamer, but I'd like to think that most people in res ed really care about the students, so when my encounters with res ed and its representatives are so inconsiderate, rude, and unwilling to make an extra effort-- sometimes even a normal effort-- to assist a student, it bothers me. I do, however, very much appreciate your response. Thanks!

As a former Res(Ed)life-whore-bitch-of-love, I can guarantee you that if the housing isn't completed, they will be bending over backwards to make accommodations . . . the date of completion has always been an issue, but when I asked a professional staff member about it in the spring, they said that if there wasn't room in the dorms, they'd even be willing to put people up at the Oberlin Inn for a while . . . the department may have its problems, but they're really not out there to screw students; we're still the customers.

the housing isn't ready yet. i'm currently at oberlin (w00t), so if you're moving in early, you'll have temporary housing, most likely in east.

Hello,

I hope you are having a great summer. I wanted to write to provide you with an update on the Union Street housing project. The housing project is currently on schedule and should be available for students to move into on September 4. However, as with all construction projects, there may be delays.

I am writing you to inform you that there is a chance that three of the eleven buildings may not be ready for move-in on September 4. Unfortunately, you have been assigned to one of these three buildings. If there is a delay, it is our sincerest desire to minimize inconveniences to you. If temporary housing is necessary, we will provide those students with a 19-, 14-, 12-, or 10- meal plan (without additional flex) at no additional cost. In addition, we will provide students with storage space and assistance with their relocation to Union Street when the units become available. Students will be temporarily housed in the Oberlin Inn, College rental units, or residence hall lounges. It is estimated that, if needed, students would be in temporary housing for no longer than two weeks. The College is working
very closely with the contractors to make sure that the project is
completed on time and we are optimistic that the buildings will be
ready. I am writing now only to alert you to the possibility of a short delay and to inform you of the plans we are making, should they be necessary. As we receive more detailed information on the timing of the completion of these three houses, we will continue to update you. The next update should occur on or about August 17, 2005.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Molly J. Tyson
Associate Dean/Director of Residential Education

I got this e-mail August 11th. I'm especially thrilled about the prospect of living in a residence hall lounge for the first 2 weeks of school.
