Cell Phone Service
I know this has been asked at least twice before, but I couldn't find either of the posts and I've a sneaking suspicion that they weren't titled. So, here's the question again and perhaps this is a topic that's memory-worthy.

In the next couple of weeks, I'm planning on getting a cell phone that will primarily be being used in Oberlin over this summer and in the University Circle and Shaker Square regions of Cleveland thereafter.

What works? Is there anything that consistently doesn't work? Do you have any other reasons to reccommend one provider over another?

Cingular sucks. Verizon is great. When I had Cingular I had to go outside if I even wanted a chance at getting service, and even then it was iffy. With Verizon, I get service everywhere on campus (with the exception of inside some buildings--Hall auditorium, for example). It works in my dorm, which is the biggest plus. I don't know about any other providers.

Really? I use Cingular, and I have no problem getting a signal anywhere in Oberlin, except in the DeCafe, randomly. It works fine in my room in Dascomb, and my boyfriend's room in the Firelands, and other peoples' rooms in other dorms. And everywhere outside. Maybe it's just the phone you had. Plus it's cheap: I have a plan that has no roaming or long distance anywhere in the US for $40/month, so it is good for here and when I'm home in the summer. so, yay Cingular.

Well, I think I said this last week at dinner, but it probably bears putting down if this goes to memories:

I've got Sprint, and it's not too bad. It occasionally get a little picky in the dorms, but is usually okay outside and in transit to places. It also seems to work all right in the houses I've been in that are in town. Downside though is $$ on this one, and I will probably change it once my parents aren't the ones paying the bill so I can use it to call them if there's something else that works as well.

(This is also as of now: they have occasionally been known to redo their network so it could decide not to include Oberlin at some point.)

I used to have AT&T, and I could only get a signal outside. So I switched to verizon, and it's great. Plenty of signal almost anywhere on campus.

Lee, if you get verizon, we can talk on the phone for free. All summer. All summer long. For free. For free, I tell you!

So, I did ultimately go with Verizon! And I like it a lot.

If anyone looking at this decides to go with Verizon, save an alumna some money by letting me be your referral. Email me (poison_ivy_toys at yahoo.com) when you decide to get service and tell me your name, address, and phone number. I promise not to harrass you or submit your email to porn sites! I just want the sweet-sweet referral discounts!

I've had very good experiences with my Verizon service both in Oberlin and Elyria. When I lived in Oberlin it was a big plus that Verizon has a kiosk in the Midway Mall and that the "oops, I did something really dumb to my phone, can you please fix it?" place is right across the street from the mall.
