To all cell phone users,
I'm getting a cell finally and I was wondering what the good provider on campus is. It would suck to finally have a phone and not be able to use it. I know there were posts about this earlier, but I can't find any of them. So please if you guys have any idea what works well and what doesn't let me know.
Thanks,
-Alan

I had VoiceStream/TMobile when I was at Oberlin and it didn't really work anywhere... There were a few decent spots, but none inside any buildings -- just a spot behind the science center and one behind Finney.

Good luck!

I'm on Verizon and it works in Dascomb really well.

hey babe,
yeah, I'm on Verizon too and seem to get service most places. It's also partially about the phone you get too I think.

don't get sprint pcs. that's what i have, and its constantly drifting ina and out of service. its possible that a newer phone would work better, but why risk it?

Verizon is definitely the best one. especially when you get the plan with free long distance.

heh. i have verizon, and i consistently had no service whatsoever the entire week i was on campus last month. on the other hand, my phone has no antenna (it broke off three times in two months, and i gave up on buying replacements), so the moral of the story may just be 'don't get a Motorola v60i'.

verizon is the best - i have sprint and it sucks goat balls. i talked to some reps at some cell phone distros, and they said that t-mobile will be putting up towers or is planning to start sharing towers in our area within the next year or so, but i'd stick with verizon since it works pretty much everywhere on campus, including the dorms.

I have T-Mobile, which works pretty much everywhere, except, y'know, some places in Mudd because it's a big cement block. I have experienced, however, some difficulty speaking to people on their verizon cell-phones via my T-Mobile cell-phone because the line keeps breaking up. Someone told me that they found the two don't connect very well, or something. Take that however you will.

Verizon is best for Oberlin, but be warned that it doesn't work well in Firelands. At all. As in, I don't bother turning it on when I'm home.

When I visited, my Cingular plan worked really well.

If anyone looking at this does decide to go with Verizon, save an alumna some money by letting me be your referral. Email me (poison_ivy_toys at yahoo.com) when you decide to get service and tell me your name, address, and phone number. I promise not to harrass you or submit your email to porn sites! I just want the sweet-sweet referral discounts!

For the record, I've had very good experiences with my Verizon service both in Oberlin and Elyria. When I lived in Oberlin it was a big plus that Verizon has a kiosk in the Midway Mall and that the "oops, I did something really dumb to my phone, can you please fix it?" place is right across the street from the mall.

I have Alltel, and I've never not had reception, even inside the dorms. So, don't think that Verizon is the only one; I think Alltel is a lot better, personally.

at&t worked so well when i arrived on campus. now that they've merged with cingular, the coverage is even better. i'd go with them.
