Chem 101
Hey all! I'm trying to figure out whether I should take Chem next semester. I'm already taking Research Methods II, Cognitive Psych, Intro to Cultural Anthro and Early European History, but I can drop either of the last two.

What is the workload like? Does it depend on the teacher? How hard a course is it, and how much time do you have to put into it?

Whatever input you can give would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I took Chem 101 with Nee. Weekly homework and kind of hard tests but I found my way. Research Methods 2 was less work than 1 and Cognitive wasn't too hard for me, so I think it's doable. But I heard the non-Nee teachers were harder.

I graded for Elrod, and the workload seemed fine. Thompson is a much harder teacher, so the tests might be terrible

If the teacher for Cultural Anthropology is Pagliai, then DROP NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. However, I think she's leaving so you'll probably have somebody different and it'll be fine.

Elrod is great, and he likes to use environmental examples since that's his thing, so if you're interested in the environment he'd be a good choice. I had Thompson when I took it, and he does workshop format, so you spend 2 classes out of 3 a week doing group work. It works for some people, and some people hate it. I don't really know about 101 with other professors. I can say generally that it's not an especially easy class.

it depends on how easy research methods I was for you and how hard you think chem will be for you. i took both at the same time when in my second year and i mostly wanted to die, but i was terrible at chemistry and had to work really hard in research methods. it seemed like a lot of other people didn't have much trouble, though.

I had Nee-- he is a nice guy, very helpful, and the class was not too hard. I heard from friends that Elrod is not bad either. Like someone else said, Thompson's class is much different than Nee's or Elrod's because of the group work. Your entire class experience will depend on how good of a group you get. If you're not into working in groups DO NOT under any circumstances take Chem 101 with Thompson.
