HELP
So, I snuck into Burton today where I'll be moving in tomorrow and pretty much had a nervous breakdown because my phone has no service anywhere in the building... (cingular) What the fuck works in Burton, cause I want to switch to it.

Thank you! I'll keep polling people and probably switch

Verizon didn't work for me. It worked in stairwells, and sort-of-kind-of in the lounges, or if you leaned REALLY close to your window.

But I had a couple friends who had Verizon in there last year and they were fine. Maybe my phone just sucked.

I lived 2 rooms away from the wondrous Kim^^^^ last year and Verizon works wonderfully. It also worked well my first year when I lived on the 1st floor of Burton.

There's always the "sit in the stairwell" option, or the "sit on a bench outside" option...neither of which is particularly pleasant in winter.
Don't freak out too much. There are also sometimes out-of-network/roaming things to change to, I think.
Sorry, not particularly eloquent.

i switched from cingular to verizon while at oberlin, and my service improved dramatically. but i also found that different peoples' phones greatly varried in how well they worked in buildings-- so if it's important to be able to use your cell in your room, try researching phones, too. other wise. . . there's always the land line. still works :)

this is truest of all, you should be asking, "what service and what model phone works best in burton?". my answer is verizon on the e815.

My cellphone is on Suncom when in the South . . . anywhere else, I'm on Cingular. I lived in North last year, opposite of Burton, and my cell didn't work ANYWHERE in the building. I had to go outside to make any cell phone calls or even check my messages. Not fun. I basically had to tell everyone to call my room phone.

I have both a verizon & cingular account (one for my hubby & me, the other just with my sister b/c we talk on the phone too much)

A trip last year to Oberlin taught me this:

Cingular=bad
Verizon=good

Good luck!

cingular worked well for me in all parts of burton.

as i've said to others before, t-mobile, alltel, cingular, and verizon ALL share the same tower as of like august 2005. that means their reception is equal. it's all about the phone.

hmmm, well I guess I have the wrong phone. I have a w6001 with no reception, my mom had a razr with no reception, and my brother had a slvr with like two bars in one remote spot of my room... and it just happened to be my roomates bed, lol

what I really want is a tmobile sidekick, does anybody think those have good reception? or do verizon phones just get better service, etc. overall??

I have a SLVR with T-Mobile and get fine reception, even in my brick box of an apartment.

There's a damn sexy bench off of north quad by Burton...and that's where cingular landed me first year. Verizon works even in the hole of Burton basement where the Review office eats my soul. So...do you like sitting outside? The choice is yours.

they have to let you keep it---it's the law.

As has been previously noted however, you're living in a giant cinderblock box 15 miles from civilization. Nothing's going to be real great, and your service quality will depend more on your specific phone model than your carrier.

Man, if you think Oberlin isn't civilization you should visit anyplace in America other than a city. Just a life lesson.

Ive had, and still have cingular, and didn't get any service last year until I got a new phone. Now my phone works for the most part all over campus. It really does depend on the model of the phone, and it seems like whatever plan/phone you do have someone else will always have service at a time when you dont and vice versa.
