Cell Phone
I'm going to get a cell phone, I don't have alot of money, so I need something cheap, but also useable.

T-Mobile has a 300 min. plan with unlimited weekend min. and no nationwide, long-distance, or roaming charges for $30.00 a month. (This seems like the best deal...)

Cingular has roll-over minutes, 450 anytime min. 5000 night and weekend min. no nationwide, long-distance or roaming charges for about $40.00 a month.

Verizon has a plan for 450 min. free night and weekend min. no roaming charges, but they charge for long distance.
$40.00 a month.

All the companies have free in-calling and will give me a free flip phone with games, ring-tones, etc. with a 2 year contract.

I am wondering what service providers people in Oberlin use, how good is the service of your company, do you get clear calls, or disconnected alot, etc.

I need some recomendations on what phone service to go with. Thanks!

I use T-Mobile, and I've been very happy with their service in Oberlin. I haven't had any calls dropped, and the only places I can't get service are in some basements. I would recommend them.

Also, take a look at http://oberwiki.net/index.php?title=Cell_phone_service . There are a number of companies reviewed there.

I use AllTel, which seems to have really excellent coverage in Oberlin, even in places most other people don't get coverage, such as practice rooms, elevators, basements, etc. I've been really happy with their service.

Check out www.alltel.com

Cingular sucks in Oberlin. Doesn't work in dorms at all. I think Verizon works best there.

Remember that most dorms are concrete and fluorescent lights, so cell phone reception will suck in general.

That being said, I have a prepaid T-Mobile phone and 'cause I'm a cheap bastard who doesn't talk on the phone much it's perfect. If you don't need a camera or ringtones that are real songs and you have the capital, this is the way to go. $100 for 1000 minutes that are good for a year, around $40 for the phone, and no contract whatsoever. They also have nicer phones if you want to pay a little bit more. Remember that even $30 a month is $360/yr, plus an early termination fee if you decide to jump ship.

Bonus: I get reception in the basement of the library (a giant concrete bunker) most of the time.

my verizon plan is 450 minutes/month, free nights and weekends, for $40/month, but long distance IS free, so I might double check on the long distance thing if I were you

it works pretty well all over campus except in the cinderblock-y dorms and the science center, but I don't know anyone who has a phone that works there

I have verizon, and I haven't found anywhere oncampus (yet) that doesn't get excellent service. Of course, I don't spend much time in bunkers or trenches or anything. I've heard a bunch of people complain about cingular, but verizon is pretty universally awesome.

Verizon gets by far the best service on campus. And you can do that little *28somethingsomething thing when you go to Ohio/home again that re-orients the phone.

Only place I didn't get service was in DeCafe, for some reason.

I have Verizon, which is quite good, but Alltel seems a lit better...my friends who have it get service absolutely everywhere, whreas I get it most places, but it was only so-so in my dorm and didn't work at all in the science center.

There is a black hole in the science center for verizon (sometimes you can get it near the windows), but everywhere else has seemed to work awesome. *228 (and *221) will reprogram your phone and update everything so that you get the best service. Plus, Verizon is rising in popularity (not that we Obies like to give head to the man), but that means you can talk for free to more people (Verizon-Verizon is free).

I use Verizon, and I really like it. (Same goes for my boyfriend.) As other people have said, dorm reception isn't so good, but I could use it in my room (and my boyfriend never had a problem in his room). (I haven't had any reception problems since moving out of the dorm, though.) Also, I'm pretty sure I get free long-distance (since I use it to call home in Illinois and I don't think I've ever been charged long distance), although it's possible my plan's different from the one you're looking at.

I have a friend who can't use her (cingulair) plan at all right now, because her family used up all their minutes and there's something funky going on with the "free/unlimited" nights and weekend minutes on their plan... I don't entirely understand it, but it boils down to her not using her phone until August since it would be 35 cents a minute, even on nights and weekends.

My Verizon works everywhere outside of basements. This, unfortunately, includes both Wilder basement and Mudd A-level, but in general it works and works well.
