trails and routes

Hi guys!

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good trails or routes in Oberlin for biking and jogging.

For biking, anywhere between 15 to 30 miles would be ideal.

For jogging, a 6 mile route or so would be nice.

I only ask because going around the school would be kind of .. not as rewarding? And I was hoping someone might in the know of a place to go that's not super high traffic with cars or whatnot.

Thanks!

Summer job with kids & nature!

Hey guys, this is kind of a longshot but I though I'd post here anyway because it seems like a very Oberlin type thing. I graduated in 2005 and am currently working for the Nature Conservancy, a national environmental non-profit, in New York City.

Every summer they send a bunch of high school kids to a bunch of sites on the east coast to work on preserves for a month and learn about nature. They are looking for mentors to accompany and supervise the kids (3 kids per group) during the month of July.

This a really awesome job where you paid to spend a month outside and mentor kids that have never really had much contact with nature. (Also, of note is that one group of kids will spend a week working with another Obie grad, Carly Trumann, up in Maine. :) ) The basic qualifications are experience working with older kids and experience working outdoors. They are also looking for older people (i.e 25ish) since you would be working with high schoolers. The program runs through the month of July and pays $2,900, includes room and board, and you have to be on the east coast, obviously.

If you know anyone that would be interested, could you pass this on? I know a lot of grads still haunt this journal...

Co-op House in Boston seeks summer sublets and yearlong housemates

My collective house in Lower Allston, a neighborhood of Boston full of music, activists, and vegan dining options, is looking for new housemates! Our house has seven bedrooms, two living rooms (one for sitting, one for dancing!), a huge kitchen, two bathrooms, and an awesome open basement that hosts shows, open mikes, and soon a full-length musical. We have a porch and a yard too, and will be building raised beds for growing food this summer.

We buy staple groceries together as a house, and those run from 8 to 20 dollars a week, depending on what we're out of. We tend to dumpster about half of our food and always have bread around. We only collectively buy and cook vegan food, though there are no rules barring non-vegan food (including meat) from the kitchen.

We split chores up for common spaces, and chores rotate weekly. We also share dinner and dishes, so there is almost always dinner or leftovers available every night.

Rent is low for the area. We split up rent based on the idea that everyone pays the same amount for use of common space, but that our rents are adjusted based on the square footage of our rooms, and then we split the utilities evenly.

We want to be as sustainable of a home as possible, and everyone in the house has some level of commitment to not destroying the earth. We make decisions on a consensus model, with no one person as the boss, and we do our best to minimize hierarchies.

Check out the Eliconia Code below the cut for a better idea of who we are and who we're looking for. Read more... )

Summer sublets-- several weeks to several months
New (semi) permanent members

Rents range between $300-500 depending on the size of the room and whether or not you share with a roommate.
Interested? Contact Kyla at kylajagger at gmail

**Looking for ACTIVISTS & ORGANIZERS especially!

Please do not x-post this elsewhere, but feel free to share it with like-minded Obies.

OSCA manuals

Would anyone please be so kind as to mail, or photocopy and then mail, or scan and e-mail as many different OSCA manuals as possible? Thankya.

In my post-Oberlin life (alum '08) I have had the pleasure of joining several collectives and co-ops (including a vegan pizzeria worker's collective, omfg). I'd really love to share some OSCA process with these groups. OSCA has developed some incredible resources and skills over time, especially related to smooth turnover, which is harder to find in collectives that don't change up every semester. OSCA's got mad organizational skillz, too, that are to be envied.

Especially:
--Any of the Kitchen cleanliness manuals, like kitchco or poco or even head cook
--Consensus flow charts and explanations
--Financial and membership organizing
--SOPA and other mediation

DIY Guide to Cleveland

Hey Obies,

I make a zine called GreenLight that focuses on DIY environmentalism and our most recent issue is a guide to Cleveland (with a focus on independent, affordable, and vegetarian spots). I think it's a good starting point for students who want to explore Cleveland's neighborhoods. If you have any places that you'd like me to add, just let me know! You can order a hard copy of the zine online, too!

I moved back to Cleveland after I graduated and am still getting to know the city, but let me know if you have any questions about Cleveland and I'll try to help! It's not such a bad place!

Hey everyone, I seem to have lost the right-hand glove from two different pairs of gloves. I lost the black one maybe a month ago and the green/greyish one sometime in the last week or so.

Here is a picture of the remaining gloves:

If anyone finds either missing glove, please email me at renee [dot] lague at the usual, or just respond to this comment. It is snowing outside and my right hand is cold!

I saw Casa Fiesta changed to Lupita's. Did the menu change at all? Has anyone eaten there since the change? I'm particularly interested in their vegetarian/vegan options.

Do you know someone who was killed, or lost someone on the roads of Jamaica?

I'm Cheska Tolentino, OC '09, posting on behalf of my friend, Carole Holland.

On February 1st, 2009 my son was run down on the side of the road in Negril, Jamaica, by someone who was racing on the roads. He was only 26, and was killed on my birthday, with my family assembled there for the celebration.

We are currently seeking to amass as much information as we can on others, especially American tourists who have been hurt, or know someone who was has been injured or killed on these roads, in an effort to force the government to institute measures to make the roads safe.

If you, or anyone you know been injured or have had friends or family killed while on the roads of Jamaica, I would like to hear from you. Please email back with your story.

Even if you personally have not experienced this, would you take a moment to support our efforts to make the roads of Jamaica safe for all, residents as well as tourists, by clicking on our on-line petition, and sharing it with as many people as you can? Our actions are already being taken notice of, the goal is to have hundreds of thousands of signatures. Please help.

Thank you so much.

(This is a serious request for help; those who would respond with nonsense or by trying to sell something, please, please take a pass on this one.)

What Would You Do If You Were President?

Suppose you became president of the United States as in right now. What would you do and what changes would you make?

The Jackson (as in David A. Jackson) administration would do the following:

1. Set up a long and rigorous program that allows for illegal immigrants to become legalized, where they would have to pass a tougher exam than one who was never an illegal immigrant. For every year that they are illegal, they will have to pay more taxes.

2. Continue the Obama Administration's millitary plans as far as the war in Iraq and war in Afghanistan is concerned.

3. Continue the Obama Administration's plan to stimulate the economy.

4. Leave the abortion policy as it currently stands as of 03/03/09.

5. Add the following amendments to the constitution:
a. Amendment 28: "Revision of Amendment II." All civilians, off duty police, and off duty military personnel are banned from carrying or possessing handguns. Such a violation would result in no less than 15 years in prison.
b. Amendment 29: "Marriages and Unions." The government shall recognize the rights of any and all willing pairs of individuals, regardless of race, class, gender, creed, or sexual orientation. Additionally, all united couples shall receive the same rights and benefits as married couples, and the government, regardless of political level, shall recognize all marriages and unions, regardless of where they were originated.
c. Amendment 30: "Initiation of War or Invasion." The United States government, president, congress, legislation, and judicial court is hereby banned from solely initiating any war on any other country unless physically provoked due to blatant acts of terrorism.
d. Amendment 31: "Abolishment of the Death Pentaly" The United States Constitution hereby defines capital punishment under the eighth amendment clause of "Cruel and Unusual Punishment" and would thus be banned permanently.

6. Require for the Affirmative Action policy to be revisited and revised on an annual basis.

7. Require the United States consensus to be taken every four years as opposed to every ten years, on the year before the presidential election.

8. Establish a flat tax that goes specifically to secondary education where the majority of it goes to public schools and the rest go to private schools.

This is the beginning. I'll post more as I think of more.

A question on textbooks of some courses

There is a rich man who has deep interest in my divorced mother. He recently gave her quite a large amount of money so that I can buy things I need for college. But obviously, I don't need anything that expensive to buy. But in view of his good will, my mother told me to get myself at least something.
So the only economically reasonable purchase option I can come up with is buying the textbooks in advance. Fortunately I had made up a short list of courses I potentially will take during my first year. Even if I, voluntarily or involuntarily, end up taking different courses, I will be able to read the books at some point.
So if any of you have taken any of these courses, please tell me what textbooks were required for each. As I have tried numerous times to reach the professors via e-mail, my inbox remains dormant.

FYSP-147 - Genesis of Controversy
RELG-205 - Hebrew Bible in its Near Eastern Context
FREN-360 - Colloquium: Ancien Regime Women Writers
ARTS-335 - Saints and Relics in Medieval and Renaissance Art
ECON 209 - Economic Development

I would appreciate it very much.

Housing selection time

Since I'm away this semester, I can't go around and scope out different dorms like I was planning to. How are the renovations in Noah? How are the singles there and in Fairchild? Also, I think I remember learning at some point that there are apartments in Asia house which aren't included as program housing, though the resed page makes no mention of this. Is this true and if so, are there any singles or only doubles?
Oh...and another question, if I select resed as my housing proxy, will they just stick me anywhere in my top dorm choice or will I have more say in the matter?
