Fisa Vote Statement Disappointed.
This is only the second time I've been disappointed in the campaign. I was angry that they took so long to respond to Rev. Wright's second appearance, and today I'm disappointed that he supports the FISA "compromise."

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on FISA Compromise

“Given the grave threats that we face, our national security agencies must have the capability to gather intelligence and track down terrorists before they strike, while respecting the rule of law and the privacy and civil liberties of the American people. There is also little doubt that the Bush Administration, with the cooperation of major telecommunications companies, has abused that authority and undermined the Constitution by intercepting the communications of innocent Americans without their knowledge or the required court orders.

To be fair, this has been his stance for a while, and he still stated that he wants to strip immunity from the bill.

but the bill allows for immunity as long as the telecoms can show a letter from the DOJ that said it was legal.

Right, and that's what he wants to strip from the bill.

how can you support a bill that includes something like this that you don't support? it seems that this was the issue holding up the initial vote.

Because you support a bill but not all of its provisions, and you state your disapproval of those provisions and work to strip that provision before the vote.

I agree, he's sending a really weak and lame message here. If he really hates the amnesty provision, he should make it clear that he'll do whatever it takes to kill the bill until it's removed.

I sure hope his actions in the Senate are better than this.

If you're trying to pull a quick on someone by pretending to be more centrist than you are?

Well maybe I'm in the minority here when I say this but this is politics. You don't always get what you want. Compromises are made everyday. All you hope for is there is something to gain in that compromise. I'm not at all disappointed or saddened. But that's just me. :)

Exactly.

Plus, Bush was breaking the original law anyways, so it really doesn't even matter what law Congress passes, Bush'll do whatever he wants, lol.

You hit the nail on the head. This is not Obama getting what he wants, this is him realizing that sometimes, you don't get exactly what you want. Sometimes, there is an acceptable compromise.

And that, is Politics. Which is what the reality is. Does Obama represent change? Yes. But he still has to deal with the politics of Washington D.C.

This isn't one of my pet issues, so I am not too miffed, I am fine with it.

Plus, he's a senator...being in the senate is all about compromise. The Presidency will give him the bully pulpit, but that doesn't mean compromise is lacking there either. This is definitely politics and compromise is how things move forward.
