(3/08) Animal Testing: Improving lives or Unnecessary Harm?

Animal Testing plays a bigger role in our lives than we generally think
about. Many products that surround us - medications, body cleaning
products, and make-up - were tested on animals in some way, or include
ingredients that were tested during their development. "Cruelty free"
products aren't necessarily safe from this testing either; the FDA
currently has no legal regulation of that statements. In the
pharmaceutical industry, testing on animals is required by law, to
determine the action of a drug and make sure there aren't any dangerous
effects before it is given to human subjects.

How much is the life of an animal worth?

Join the Bioethics Forum on Wednesday, March 8th for a discussion of
    this
    hot topic:

We'll provide the food, you come with your opinions (or just to listen
    and
    learn more). All are welcome!

    Place: Silver 809
    Time: 03/08 (Weds) 6:30-9:00pm
(room reserved for us until 9pm)

"Gattaca" screening and discussion, Monday (Feb 6), 6:30-9pm
Genetic engineering - science fiction, or possible future?

Scientists are growing more and more capable of screening before birth, allowing them to determine certain genetic diseases and the sex of a child early on in the pregnancy. However, the developing technology brings forth a lot of fears - if we could find out everything about what our
child would be, would there be a temptation to select for the "best" child possible? Would some want to choose specific traits, such as excellence in athletics, or certain physical features?

Come join us in our next discussion, where we will be screening GATTACA, starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman.

    Place: Silver 411
    Time: Monday, Feb. 6, 6:30-9PM

No prior experience with the material is necessary to join us.

Food and drinks will be served!

Prisoners of the Mind: ethics in psychological interrogation 11/30
Prisoners: they've got information, we need answers. But at what point do
we draw the line - when are our methods too cruel? The treatment of
prisoners has come under fire with alleged use of scientific and medical
personnel in the shaping of interrogation techniques, especially in
military prisons. The position of the potential victims complicates the
matter, as the word of a prisoner carries less weight in general. How do
we define abuse in these cases, and how can we make the situation better?

Come share your thoughts in our next Bioethics discussion, scheduled for
    the Wednesday after Thanksgiving break,

    Wed Nov 30th at 7pm
    room: Silver 809

As usual, no prior experience with the topic is needed to attend.

    FLAG WARS
    Monday 10/24, 7pm
University Hall (110 East 14th Street)
    C-lounge (basement)
"Flag Wars" is a poignant account of competing economic interests between two historically oppressed groups, seen through the politics and pain of gentrification. This story takes place in Columbus, Ohio. Black residents, working-class or poor, and often elderly, fight to hold onto their homes and heritage. Realtors and gay home-buyers see the enormous, often run-down homes as fixer-uppers. The inevitable clashes expose prejudice and self-interest on both sides, as well as the common dream to have a home to call your own.

Food and refreshments will be served. All NYU students are welcome. Flag Wars is being screened courtesy of PBS's P.O.V. series (<http://www.pbs.org/pov>www.pbs.org/pov). Co-sponsored by the Office of Student Activities, the Office for African-American, Latino, and Asian-American Student Services, and the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Student Services.
