Free Paris Hilton NOW protest - Thursday, TV crews present
Hey NYUers, listen up. On Thursday (May 10) we're urging people to come to Washington Square Park with signs and ATTITUDE to show their support for Paris Hilton. Even if you don't love her, you have to admit that 45 days in one of L.A.'s most dangerous female prisons is not a fair punishment for neglecting to renew your license. This is about the freedom to do what you want vs. overly conservative judges coming down hard on anyone who likes to party.

We all know how crazy and frustrating DMV bureaucracy can be. Bring "FREE PARIS" signage, wear t-shirts to show your support, and scream your heads off. Several national television networks have expressed interest in covering the event at Washington Square Park. So if you want to fight extreme conservative bullshit, and have a good time on national TV, stop by.

When: 4pm, this Thursday.
Where: Washington Square Park, meet our organizers right at the arch!

For more information, visit http://freeparis.shutterline.com
Sign up for the newsletter to get more information on future protests, including the sister protest in L.A.

Our site was literally featured on MSNBC's evening broadcast yesterday, you can view that clip here (skip ahead to the 2:00 min. mark)

4pm, Thursday, the arch. See you then! Please spread the word and reply to this post or email me privately so we can gauge the number of protesters. We may have free shirts available.

Forget the expired license and drunk driving. Paris Hilton deserves to be jailed for pushing feminism back to the dark ages.

Yes, I think "drunk driving" are two key words missing from the above description - i.e. the reason why her license was suspended in the first place. Maybe she is being used as a bit of a scapegoat, but its about time the justice system stop handing out B.S. sentences to celebrities who break the law.

Absolutely. Anyway, people like her put themselves out there to be scapegoats. Her entire career rests on her being controversial and offensive-- must we remember that she was a nobody before her sex tape? Every bit of negative publicity has made her more millions, and it's a bit ridiculous to complain now about actually experiencing the consequences of that.

You have got to be kidding.

Couldn't your protesting energy be better spent on something like, the Rockefeller Drug Laws which disproportionately affect poor people of color? I think they could use your help more than an incredibly wealthy hotel heiress.

I can only hope that this is a joke, since you created your journal today and have no entries.

Please tell me this is a joke...

Also, commencement is all day on Thursday at the park. Somehow I don't see a protest happening with that going on.

A good point. We may have to reschedule. Those on the list will be told the new date if that's necessary.

While I like a bit of anonymous hostility as much as the next guy, this is basically about the fact that our country has gone overboard with giving out sentences.

Over 1 percent of the U.S. population is incarcerated, and a lot of it is related to B.S. soft drug usage and bureaucratic nonsense. This isn't communist Russia; if your state ID expires you shouldn't be thrown in jail for 45 days.

Thanks for your opinion, though. Maybe if this continues to get press we can ride the wave to draw attention to the LARGER issues in this country. Conservative judges, outdated drug policy, and so forth.

Oh, please. The only issue the press is going to benefit is Paris' bank account. You can't possibly think that the plight of a person whose entire life is based around her ability to make tabloid covers is actually going to draw attention to where it deserves?! That is a sadly naive point of view. The only thing you are going to achieve is more notoriety for Paris Hilton, making her into an even more undeserving icon.

I agree with tartedelune. Spend your time supporting someone who deserves it.

What she said. You're not going to draw attention to anything "meaningful" by holding this protest. Paris Hilton broke the law and deserves her sentence. That judge is a hero, if anything.

It wasn't just because her license expired. She was driving on a suspended license because of a previous drunk driving charge. Celebrities should not be held above the law.

While I appreciate your outrage at the system, if you are concerned about conservative sentencing etc, I will say again that I think your energy would be better spent focusing on people who actually need help. You know, people who aren't billionaires.

Paris isn't being jailed for an expired license. She's being jailed because she's a self-deluding serial drunk driver who's very capable of hurting someone because of her irresponsibility. Maybe you should educate yourself on the issue at hand before protesting it.

then go address those issues immediately, as opposed to attempting to get the press, notoriously fickle, to follow you from a skinny blonde socialite to problems which aren't nearly as photogenic!

We didn't run out. This just requires less thought than things like, you know, unjust war and immigration and civil liberties. I mean, wouldn't you rather think about poor, poor Paris Hilton than icky stuff like gay rights or a woman's right to choose?

this is also a fixable problem. one with an easy solution, as opposed to most issues where people can agree that there is a problem but have no clue what to do about it.

wheras paris says thank you, judge says sorry, whatever whatever, oh wow i changed the world.

I strongly suspect you're only doing this because you want to get on the news.

On the off-chance you're serious, you're nuts. Her license wasn't "not renewed," it was suspended, because she was driving drunk. What's more, there was absolutely no need for her to flout the law -- she could've ordered a chauffeur over with a snap of her fingers, instead of endangering lives. If you honestly think it's a good idea for drunk drivers not to be sent to jail if they keep driving, then at least find the case of some worthy poor person who needs to drive to get to work.

The only reason you're staging this is because you know TV cameras are going to be present.

I echo the posters above who say there are myriad other causes to protest.

This is a joke, right? Am I being punk'd?

but if you're not, there's a high chance she'll spend less than a day there.... Michelle Rodriguez was sentenced in the same facility and spent about 2 hrs in jail before being released...

let's focus our attentions on something a little more worthwhile that affects the greater population.

Stop responding to this thread with pseudo-aware, pretentious bullshit.

Nobody cares. We get it: you're original, you don't like the mainstream media or celebrity culture, you only visit the fair trade coffee shop by Astor Place.

And stop pulling the relative argument that FPHN! is irrelevant because we could be fighting poverty or the war in Iraq. Morality is not an either/or situation.

Who are you fooling? Plenty of people here have raised truthful and well-thought out responses to what you're trying to do and no one has claimed to be a better person than you. Of course with anything controversial you're going to get ad hominem attacks, so just hug your blankie tighter and get over it.

What we're reacting to is your suggestion that she was given prison time for "for neglecting to renew [her] license," which is blatantly untrue. You have every right to protest any issue you like, but for everyone's sake make sure you know what you're protesting.

And no, morality is NOT an either/or situation. So therefore a person of any age, race, gender, or status should not be exempt from imprisonment after having a serial drunk driving record and deliberately breaking the law.

1) Paris Hilton was driving drunk.
2) Paris Hilton was stupid enough to get caught driving drunk.
3) Paris Hilton's license was suspended because she was caught driving drunk.
4) Paris Hilton continued to drive even though her license was suspended.
5) Paris Hilton was caught driving on a suspended license and warned not to do so again.
6) Paris Hilton was caught driving on a suspended license after already being warned not to do so.
7) Paris Hilton was finally given jail time for her second violation of driving under a suspended license.

What part of this does Paris NOT deserve to be punished for?
Any one of her violations could have gotten her jail time, and if anything she was given MORE leniancy than a normal person would get. She's incredibly wealthy and could have just hired a driver, so the fact that she continued to drive even after being repeatedly warned not to even though she doesn't need to ever drive herself anywhere is just proof that she thinks she's above the law.

Anybody else would already have gotten jail time for these actions.
If Paris doesn't go to jail it just proves that our court system is a joke and rich people don't have to deal with the consequences of their actions.
