Driving to NYC

I have had a trip planned to NYC for awhile, and it's getting thrown off now because of various factors (one of which being weather) and I have driven once before, but I was staying in Jersey at the time. This time I have a place to stay in the city, and I'm wondering about the economics of driving. Would love to hear some opinions with regards to a place to park the car in the city and things like that. Or whether it would be better just to book a flight and take my chances. I didn't realize a cab right into the heart of Manhatten was so expensive, that and the flight will exceed $300 and it's about a ten hour drive from where I live.

Thanks!

Conversations with Culture

“Contemporary Performance and the Multiverse”

December 9th at 7pm
Location: Sony Wonder Technology Lab, 550 Madison Avenue (at 56th Street)

On December 9th, PS122 will host the second discussion in its new Conversations with Culture series, “Contemporary Performance and the Multiverse.” The conversation uses as its launching pad PS122 artists Lisa D’Amour and Katie Pearl’s workTerrible Things, a new collaborative work exploring the multiverse though personal narrative, particle physics, and a shifting “set” of 600 marshmallows that stand in for particles, potential energy, and the sub-atomic realm. Panelists will discuss the role and ramifications of contemporary performance as a mode of articulating scientific theory and expressing our human experience of the laws and mysteries of the physical universe. These events are free and open to the public and endeavor to reinsert performance into the cultural, economic, and environmental debates coursing through contemporary society, from which it has recently largely been excluded.

December 9th Participants Include
David Z. Albert, Frederick E. Woodbridge Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, Author of Quantum Mechanics and Experience and Time and Chance

Lisa D’Amour and Katie Pearl, co-creators of Terrible Things, which premieres at PS122 on December 4th.

I'm grateful for any and all information:

I'm a student at CUNY. Got laid off earlier in the year and have been on unemployment since January. I'm 23. I'm on medicaid.

I need to have at least one root canal (and probably several) done. Medicaid won't cover this procedure on molars, as far as I know and I really don't have the money to afford to pay for this. I'd like to hold on to my teeth (because, um, I need them), but I really don't know what to do.

I've heard about NYU school of dentistry. Can anyone give me more info on this (the site doesn't seem to point the way to price ranges, etc) or any other low cost clinics?

Thanks so much. I'm in pretty bad pain and I'm really unsure as to what I should do.

Free flu shots and low-cost glasses?

Does anyone know of any clinics or flu vans that are giving out free or low-cost flu shots this season? Manhattan is the easiest for me to get to, Queens would be possible too.

Also, I've heard whispers that you can get low-cost glasses in Chinatown or somewhere. I need a new prescription and new glasses. I am very aware that there are places online where you can purchase cheap glasses, however I have a small face and I'm extremely particular about how my glasses fit. If they're too big or slide around I can't wear them, so I prefer to shop in person so I can try on the frames first. If anyone knows of a good place where I can get glasses for under $200 or so (I'm an Americorps volunteer who receives a stipend of $167 every two weeks, so my money is tight) that would be awesome.

Apple Picking

Hey NYCforFree'ers--Does anyone know a good place to go Apple Picking that's accesible by public transit (I assume MetroNorth or NJ Transit)? Considering breaking down and getting a car to go next weekend, but if I could just hop on a train, that would be way better.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Cheap massage and veggie restaurants in Manhattan

My Americorps team is volunteering and living on Long Island, and I'm taking one of my teammates for her first tour of NYC tomorrow. I've been before, but the last trip was a couple of years ago, and I just need a little advice. I've checked the memories, but most of them seem to be a couple of years old. We're on a very tight budget ($167 every 2 weeks)... so there.

Does anyone know of any cheap massage places in Manhattan? No, not 'erotic' massage, I have bursitis in my shoulder and my doctor recommended a massage.

My teammate is a vegetarian. Any cheap places to eat with good veggie options for her? She's not terribly picky (she'll pick the pepperoni off a pizza) but I'd like to try to find someplace she could get some good vegetarian food.

Any other fun activities I could take her on would be much appreciated. I think we're going to visit Central Park, Ground Zero, ride the Staten Island ferry, that sort of thing.
