For those of us heading to the Halloween Parade on Friday, it's crunch time! When and where is a good place to meet?
The line-up for the parade is 6th Avenue south of Spring Street and north of Canal between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. We can only enter the line-up on 6th Ave. from the East and South between Canal and Spring.
I'm thinking we should meet up somewhere nearby, around 4 or 5 PM. The only issue is to find a good spot that works for everyone while still giving us time to walk through the village and check out the crowds on the way to line up.
Is anyone coming from work or anything like that, and therefore have non-negotiable space/time limits to consider? The beauty of having no plan is we're still pretty damn adaptable at this point, don't be shy.
Also, I shall have my cellphone with me. If you want to be able to get in touch that way, or at least receive the "get your ass to ___!" text messages I shall undoubtedly be sending around like mad, please shoot me an email or private LJ message and let me know.
There are also a few interesting events going on after the parade.
The Promised Land, a 24-hour-long travelling art party type thing. My girlfriend and I plan to check this out because we're dorks like that.
If you're not into that, Sidepocket has the following suggestions:
Webster Hall Party - right near the parade ending, but pricey and likely crowded as hell.
NYC Resistor Halloween Party - In downtown Brooklyn, but only $10 cover and it's run by our fellow hackers. |

After about four days missing, Jim walked back into the nursing home late Monday evening and was immediately rushed to the hospital for evaluation.
Jim's family and friends are extremely grateful for everyone's help and support over the past few days.Current Mood: relieved

We've got a couple of cool Halloween happenings this year.
October 18 - ZombieCon! A couple hundred New Yorkers in zombie gear terrorize the streets of Manhattan.
October 31 -The Village Halloween Parade, which many of us regularly gallavant our costumey selves around in.
Who's into going? Use this post's comments to discuss meeting up, or contact me privately and I'll be sure to let you know the plan once it exists.
EDIT 10/28 - Current planning discussions are now going on at this post.Current Mood: jubilant

Sorry guys. I really meant to go this month but I can't, I've got work. I wanted to see if anyone could help me find a good barebone AMD Turion 64X2 based laptop because one of my clients has a HP DV2000 with a bad screen. Big surprise, right? I have to either fix it, which I tried disconnecting the display lid switch module, no luck.
Is this community basically dead now? Aside from last year there only seems to be one short post. Anyone go to the meetings? I know RTF probably does =)Current Music: asdaMercyful Fate - Nightmare by thy Name

» HEARING ON HOTEL PENN FUTURE ON TUESDAY, 6 PM, NYC!
There will be a meeting of the local Community Board 5 in New York City this Tuesday evening to discuss the possibility of landmark status for the Hotel Pennsylvania, home of the HOPE conferences, and a magnet for tourists from all over the globe for nearly a century.
We first reported the story of the hotel's planned demolition back in January. Since then a number of efforts have been made to get the public's attention and to help preserve what we consider to be a truly historic place. The replacement being proposed would do little to welcome visitors to New York and would result in another flashy advertisement structure to replace the 1700 relatively cheap rooms that are filled year round.
The first HOPE conference took place there in 1994. The Last Hope is scheduled for July 18-20, 2008.
The fight to save the hotel faces an uphill battle for a number of reasons. It simply is not luxurious enough for many tastes. The rooms are not generally huge as they are quite old. And while the outside of the structure is quite impressive, much of the inside has been changed and refurbished over the decades. Many New Yorkers simply don't see the need for another old structure to be preserved. But New Yorkers are also the least likely to benefit from the hotel in the first place. People from all over the world stay there when visiting New York because of its remarkable accessibility (right across the street from Penn Station) and prices that are about half that of other hotels. It is very unlikely we would be able to find another venue in New York to hold HOPE conferences that wouldn't cost many times more. The same holds true for all sorts of other events that have chosen this particular hotel. So, regardless of what many think of the architecture and the current condition of the place, there is history and there is significance. Most of all, there is a need. That need will certainly not be filled by yet another huge financial tower.
If you'd like to speak at the meeting on Tuesday, it starts at 6 pm and will be at 227 West 27th Street, "A" Building, 8th floor, room A802. For those who can't attend (including those of you from overseas who make the hotel your home when coming to HOPE), you can always send an email to the community board expressing your concerns. Please be nice and articulate. These people can be very helpful.
There are other fronts to fight for the preservation of the hotel which are being discussed at our online forum. Please join the discussion and spread the word.

» Rapture Cafe to see Urchin at 9:00 Sunday -- Meeting Place Idea
Ok, I know that MUD while successful had mix reactions. Some liked the place, others have not. This does not mean I have not stopped looking, and I think I found another place.
Rapture Cafe (http://www.rapturecafe.com/) is located at 200 Avenue A between 12th and 13th Streets, on the site of the former Karova Milk Bar on that venerable avenue’s northernmost stretch. It seems to have good spacing, free Wi-Fi owned by the place, independent cafe, independent library and performances/parties on certainty days.
The only possible "negative" side I can see is that some of the late night programming has gays/trans, but considering the open nature of our meeting and with a few gay/bi members: I see this as not a problem unless fist fights occur.
Coincidentally, the last debut of the movie Urchin (http://www.urchinthemovie.com/) is screening there Sunday July 1st at 9:00PM.
I am personally going to there at 8:00pm to check the place out, ask questions, and see the Urchin movie. If anyone NYC2600'ers or anyone else would like to meet up for this, please feel free to do so.
The other reason I am going there is because if Rapture is as good as it sounds, then this could be ANOTHER alternative spot for alt.coffee. Free Wi-Fi, books, coffee, space and also location as seen here:

If that is not convince I do not know what is.
So that is the low down. I hope things work out, and go Urchin!
P.S. Why every time I post here the page a splodes!?!

Hello, Sidepocket here. You know me from the meetings and for being an asshole and if you dont...then WTF is wrong with you son!?!
Anyhow, as many have known I have lots of old computer stuff. Towers, drives and circut shit. Some were so shot after the flood in my basement I had to scrap them. Lost alot of good parts that way. My life...
Anyhow, I plan now that in each meeting, I will now be actualy usefull and bring in parts to sell.
Here is my first one: A PS/2 Type 8555. Er no, not Playstation 2. This is made by IBM.

When I get off my ass to my tool set, I will open the case and post pictures of the parts.
Chow.

It's still a bit shaky, but I do like how it's starting out. Feedback from local nerds is required! Thanks in advance.
(I am aware that the stylesheet tends to go buggy as hell in MSIE. This isn't intentional, but perhaps I shall advertise it as a feature.)

» Driving NY/NJ area to DEFCON
We will leave NY/NJ area on or around July 31st. We will get a rental car and drive. No it's not cheap but we think a cross country trip would be fun. We will stop along the way as we see cool stuff along the way. We will be in Vegas in time for toxic BBQ.
It will be about $140 plus gas. If we take only 1 other person be prepared to chip in for 1/3rd in the very unlikely event we take a van instead of a full size sedan and if the other 3 people agree maybe we will consider taking a 4th person so be prepared to chip in for 1/4th of the rental and gas. Ideally if you and a friend want to go this might work out.
We do want to meet who ever might go with us. Being weird/strange is fine and in fact encouraged but if we are uncomfortable being around you sorry we rather go alone.
Please don't post sob stories we'll just laugh about them next time we drink.
Added: you will be of legal age!!! I do not want to explain to an Arizona state trooper why there is some 15 year old kid from NY in a back of a speeding car going to vegas.

» Non-Plans for tomorrow
Okay, due to the fact that nyc2600 can't organize its way through a kindergarten school play, I have decided to take some liberty and pop up with some strategic PLANS for tomorrow (Strategic meaning that it's a general idea of what we will do tomorrow, instead of tactical planning, which maps out exact troop movements). This is a timetable to give you kids an idea of what I would be doing tomorrow. Keep in mind that I am a deadly boring Asianic so I would be doing deadly boring asianic stuff. If you got exciting caucasian stuff that you would like to do, please do go ahead.
a) We (Your presence is optional as always) are meeting at the intersection of Canal Street and Bowery, 6:30a tomorrow morning. There will be 2 bus lines that will head to the same spot in Boston's South Station. Fung Wah and Lucky Star. Fung Wah is at Bowery & Canal, and Lucky Star is @ 69 Chrystie a block away. Either one offers competitive fares and both leaves at around 7a. The 6:30a meetup will give you some time to scavenge up Breakfast in the Chinatown area. My recommendation? Hit the bakeries nearby. If you are LATE? God help you because you are OUT. The next bus leaves at 9, I believe.
b) The bus will take around 4 hours to do its thing, and there is usually a 10 minute rest-stop on I-91/94 in Central Connecticut, usually past Hartford. Do your dirty sinful business there.
c) The destination for either bus is South Station, Boston, roughly 215 miles away. Both buses are at the same part of the terminal, 2nd floor against the wall. keep in mind that there are 2 complexes in South Station, the bus terminal part, and the MBTA/RedLine part, and when you exit south station you would be at Atlantic and Beach. The RedLine (Subway) stop is at Atlantic and Essex. Just enter the commuter train station (Resembles Hoboken Terminal, if anyone has been there before) and follow the signs to the MBTA Redline, Outbound (Towards Alewife)
The return trip time depends on your preference. There is a bus at 7:30p which gets back into NYC by midnight, or a 10p bus that reaches NYC at 2a. if you miss that one, there's also a 2a bus that reaches NYC by 6a. Plan your travels accordingly!

d) The RedLine station that you are in is, miracle of miracles, called SOUTH STATION. The tokens are $1.25 each. There is no such thing as day ass metrocards or free transfers to buses. This is solely due to the fact that Bostonians suck a whole lot. Anyways, ride 4 stops OUTBOUND (Towards Alewife) until you reach Kendell Square/MIT.

And here is the Satellite Map of the station location should you hax0r the WOPR and want to lob nukes at it.
The swapmeat is at the Albany Street garage, which is here:

Or if you get a warm and fuzzy feeling looking at Gizoogle maps, here it is, uncensored and uncut. Admissions is $5. A Lincoln.
e) Okay, Expect to spend a few 20 minute segments there. However, if you do get bored, there's the MIT Museum, which is on 265 Massachusetts Avenue, 3 blocks away. The hacker gods smiled upon nyc2600 because, sunofabiotch, it's FREE ADMISSIONS DAY! So go there and get your filthy hacker fingerprints all over it. Laugh at the foolishness of Marvin Minsky and snicker at the failure of the Lisp machine. FAIl! FAIl! FAIl!
f) Okay. At this point you are on your own. The MIT press bookstore is back @ the Kendell Square/MIT station, as is the MIT bookstore. The MIT press bookstore is a great place to pick up cheap and good reading. Good place to stop by, and one of the chicks behind the register is mighty cute (my opinion and totally does not hold weight in practice). The MIT Bookstore is more expensive and if you got the hacker bling style, go there for those $125 neural network books. The Science Bar is a local watering hole and is near the intersection of Main and Mass Av.
g) Another place that you can go is Harvard Square. You can either walk down Massachusetts Avenue towards Harvard Yard (which I intend to do), or take the RedLine 2 stops to (Surprise, surprise) Harvard Square. I would be at the Harvard Press Bookstore going through some of their Business School texts for a buddy of mine. If you want to trail you are always welcome to do so.
h) Other places of interest for visitors:
1) Boston Commons - Boston's version of Union Square/City Hall Park. It's Park Street on the RedLine. There is a visitor's center there, as is the massachusetts state house. Good for those with trailing SigOths for photo ops.
2) Chinatown - Beach and State Street. MBTA Orange Line to (where else?) Chinatown or RedLine to South Station and head down State street for 2 blocks. Cheap eats. It's really more like VietnamTown.
3) Boston's Museum Mile - MBTA GreenLine tram, take the E branch and get off at MFA. There are at least 3 to 4 museums there. Just keep in mind that the ones in NYC are cheaper in general and feature more stuff. I would only recommend hitting the MFA if you want to buy someone thoughtful gifts for birthdays and whatnot.
4) Aquarium/Wharf - MBTA Blue Line, Aquarium. Really a bit of a tourist trap. The scenary is nice, though, and you can always walk down to:
5) Downtown Crossing - Downtown Crossing or Park Street on the MBTA Red/Orange/Green lines. Think of it as like Boston's version of a hybrid between New York's Time Square/Albee Square-Fulton Mall. Yes. Same type of people, but might be good for bargain hunters, as there is a Filene's, a Macy's, and an Eddie Bauer there. Also, gawk idiotically at the skyscrapers.
Unfortunately, this being a Sunday alot of attractions do close early. Oh well.
Just a bit of warning, the MBTA FORBIDS photography on the trains, as did the MBTA po-pos in South Station, so here is a pic of the inside of the train:

And the inside of South Station:

Have a safe and fruitful trip!

Okay, weather forcast for Sunday, 84 degrees, Sunny.
As for the Chinatown Buses, Wikipedia has a really informative article on the subject. Note the 2 bus flambe incidents over the last 6 months. Bring Marshmellows and hot dogs just in case.
Can I get a response as to who is confirmed in terms of going, so I have an idea whether I should even bother taking the bus, or so that I can start dropping, oh, I dunno, TRAVEL INFORMATION?! Ya know, there is that anonymous comment option in this shizznat. Hey, if the response is underwhelming I can always sleep it in on Sunday morning.
