Feedback for "Seventeen" by Lauren

where is everyone? ladies... we're slacking, lol!

Hmmm... so.

I am digging the plot. I don’t want to say too much and give away anything to readers who may have not started the story... but I get what you’re aiming to accomplish with it and I like it.

I found your characters harder to grasp then the plot though. I think the beginning chapters should be stronger, more focused. The characters could never hold a one-topic conversation long enough for me to really get into them, or even to establish their personality.

There is also an overuse of a few words... like "cute", "honestly"... I get that it’s the lingo of being seventeen, which really is cute, honestly...lol! But maybe a toning down would be ok? Its just like *whoa* at first and I found myself laughing more at them, then with them.

I think you may have caught that mistake, because I found Chapter 11 to be exactly what I was waiting for... a consistent set of events. After that I was able to follow the story and began to put together my thoughts and opinions about the characters.

The last chapter I read was 22 and I feel like I still don’t really know the characters as well as I should - or would like too. Their conversations seem to be either really realistic... or just really shallow. Black or white... I couldn’t find any grey.

Its fiction... I know, but you have to catch yourself sometimes.

A re-reading would do some good. I got confused at some parts where the characters just didn’t make sense, example in chapter 20. Justin first says "Sometimes I wonder if I really want to play college ball anyway" ... to later, a few lines down say "My heart is just set on playing ball. I’ve never wanted to do anything else. I mean, yeah, Yale is a really amazing school and I know I could get in, it just isn’t what I really want."

He contradicts himself. But spelling and grammar are nearly perfect, two thumbs up!

The little love triangle between the two girls and the hot new neighbor. You did well to show the difference between the two relationships there. Though at times I’d wished you’d shown a little more. You have short chapters and cut corners a bit... kinda disappointing.

It feels like I’m watching a movie and then suddenly... damn, I need to use the bathroom. I come back and missed that scene that isn’t really crucial... but would’ve been nice to see anyway. Ya know what I’m saying?

But overall, like I said at first, I like what you’re doing here. Kinda gave me déjà vu of my high school days... lol! For future chapters I would advice to stay away from any cat fights/drama between Taylor and Crystal over Justin... that would just be too predictable for me.

Maybe some drama between Justin and Evan? I was expecting that at first but it never happened. Evan seemed to be pretty competitive and that kinda just disappeared. Crystal seems to be your wild card so I wouldn't bench her just yet... maybe keep Evan as the villain and drama between him and Crystal could bring her closer to Taylor and nip whatever rift her jealously with Justin may have caused?

And I'd like to see Justin soul-search a bit... he confuses me, I don't think he really knows what he wants. Taylor too, now that I think about it... but then again, what seventeen year-old does? lol!

Seventeen by laurann67
Had some free time at work, so YaY... I did my first review! :)

Secrets & Lies by whitestargirl

Loved the point of view! Its rarely used and definitely a nice change.

You may want to proof read it again and be more cautious with future chapters... I spotted a few tense mistakes, minor spelling errors too.

The dialogue was awesome... its obvious you're a fan of the time period (so am I!) cause it shows you know what you're doing. Even though you lost me a few times, wasn't sure if Lance was talking to Justin or Justin talking to Lance... lol!

The first two chapters started out great, but I felt that chapter three and four were rushed (especially the sex scene, you tease!)... and a bit jumpy. Lance's interest in Justin was obvious, but Justin's kinda came out of nowhere for me even though he was being real 'suave' in chpt 3. I'd love more descriptions too, you're working with such an awesome time period... have fun with it! And reading chapter 4, it made me wonder... was Justin just gay-curious or what?

And the letter? His engagement? Poor Lance.

So many questions... but I bet you planned that? Making us readers beg for answers that hopefully the next chapter will bring? :)

Welcome to NF.com Feedback Club

As a writer of fanfic, I guess I can say that the best reward I can ever get are feedbacks from readers. Be it a short: Ohhh! Loved it! Or a long litany of how much my story sucked, it didn’t matter as long as I get a response from the readers. Feedbacks feed my drive to write more, especially when the almighty WRITER’S BLOCK smack me right in the face (like right now – help!)

Feedbacks can also be a great tool for improvement. It’s the best way I can pick up suggestions, ideas and hints on what’s working and not working for my story. That’s why I readily volunteered myself when vikkikirky82 came up with the Feedback Club idea, because I believed in it.

Yes, I get giddy even with a simple – love, love your story, update soon! feedback. Who would like that, right? But I would also like to see a feedback that would slap me around a little bit. Challenge me in a way.

That’s what NF.com Feedback Club is aiming for. Hopefully this community would do just that, challenge writers and give them the drive to write better, be a good if not the best storyteller.

So, come on in, the door is open … don't forget to drop by the USER INFO PAGE for some 411. We promise you good times!
