“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” -Zora Neale Hurston

So who other than me and [info]o_yannik are doing a project with research involved? What are you researching?

Sound off!

1223. I've got research on the brain. It dawned on me that my assumption that the area around St. Petersburg/Leningrad was hilly and like tundra was utterly ridiculous and I oughta find out what it was really like. So today I did research on the area (flat and covered in trees) and the weather (cold), looked at pictures of the area around Leningrad during the siege, found some maps of the battle lines from September instead of May, 1942 (my folks are there in early October), data on first aid for bullet wounds (poor MC...), and figured out how far it would be from Leningrad to Helsinki while avoiding the main places where troops were situated (280 miles or so). Over all, my research for this project has been aimed at World War 2, with side investigation on all manner of random things that I just don't know about.

2841 for the past three days, since I forgot to post.

I'm researching Germany (or what will become Germany) circa 1400. It's a lot more difficult than one would think. I have this bad habit of picking very underrepresented eras of history (like the eighteenth century in the Caribbean-- wtf on that, tell me) for settings of my stories. I'm mostly trying to figure out fashions and the political situation.

Since I'm writing a historical set in a time I'm already very familiar with, my research today has been limited to the location of the Children's Aid Society. And Moros and Eris, like everyone else. ;-)

I'm researching torture and its effects for one character - that's the only major thing. And a few weapons-type things. And how intelligence services work.

It must be quite rare to do no research at all, even if it's only looking up distances or street plans or stuff like that.

Luneville has expanded by 896 words today. Not as many as I might have liked, but more than it might have been, and I'm getting close to the point where I can reuse some of the words I junked to start this second version of the story.

Zilch research in this one, so far, just the exploration of some dark corners if my mind that had hitherto escaped my attention.

I always seem to need to know something: so far, this book has made me learn about permafrost, how to trap water in a low-water environment, bees, ferrets, the underground printing trade in the eighteenth century, the ethics of property ownership, the French Revolution, the correct way to maintain a carbine rifle and Chinese astronomical water clocks.

i feel really shallow, i haven't done any research at all... nor am i planning to for this story. I have a vague idea of making it up as i go along and if anyone calls me on it, THEN i'll go research. :D Everyone else's stories sound more interesting than mine. :(

the next one i write might have to have research tho, because it's a time travel thing set in half a dozen time/place locations, none of which i have any idea about. :)

874, and done early, but didn't bother to post it.

I have researched mythology and cultures for various parts of this book and the next. Many types: Egyptian, Etruscan, Vodou, Norse, lots more. Also monsters and ancient legendary creatures. My cousin found a really good source for me at the local thrift shop and brought it over. I haven't gotten a chance to look at it in depth, but I think it will be very helpful.

I'm trying to avoid the Roman and Greek in depth, since I feel they are overused in many cases. Too easy, since everyone knows about them. I have found some fascinating legends and gods and goddesses in less popular cultures. And they fit my purposes better, too. :)

I won't go into my long list of stuff I'm researching for fun, LOL. I'm tired ;) But i do wish I could unravel the mystery that is Corel Painter X (my new toy). 506. The last few weeks I've been in the very bad habit of putting writing off until it's the last thing I do in a day. I absolutely hate that I know this and keep doing it anyway. Will try again tomorrow.

As for the research question, the only projects I haven't put significant research into are universally failed projects; I am of the opinion that one would be hard pressed to think of a project which does not require significant research for worldbuilding that isn't pretty shoddy.

For this project, off the top of my head I have researched the Industrial Revolution, the Phoenicians, modern and historical interpretations of the paranormal and magic (the kind that people think/thought is actually real, not fictional), I guess what you could call modern sigil theory, the development of law enforcement and road systems, food distribution, names (not coming up with names, but looking up when specific given names and surnames became commonly used as such, trends in naming, etc.), and different historical postal systems.

Also cultural associations with various types of wood. Like from trees. Tired as I am, I really don't know what to say about that one other than it is actually relevant if inconsequential.

That's butt in chair for two days in a row, woohoo! I'm finding that doing the writing before I do anything else means I get it done, and it's better writing. Friday is going well so far, too.

The big challenge will be whether I can keep it up over the weekend while spouse is home.

As for research -- I tend to do most of my serious research ahead of time. Several topics will interest me, I soak it up, and the various images and threads eventually work into a story. Then I make it up as I go along.

And no research yesterday, as I was (and still am) extra busy at work before VACATION (huzzaaaah!!!)

But research contained (among others):
-XVIIIth century British nobelity both in London (May Fair) and in the country
-XVIIIth century medicine, from limbs amputations to epilepsy treatment or lack thereof.
-American Revolution, mostly New York and New Jersey Campaign (1776/1777 ), and events leading to the battle of Saratoga.
-Geography of north-eastern United States (in XVIIIth century, but that shouldn't be muchly different than what Google is showing me today, right?) and it's flora and fauna.
-Culture, language and society of Cherokee Indians as well as aspects of Cherokee involvement in American Revolution in 1778 (Chicamagua Wars)

Those are the most important themes I researched, there were various smaller issues of course.
And I lllove it. :)
