A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.  ~Thomas Mann, Essays of Three Decades, 1947

True or false?

I had this scene in my head for, like, three days. Was putting if off for Saturday, but had a moment to myself yestersay and wrote it longhand. Typed it to the comp today. It was easy. Now the difficult part will be joing it with what happens before, because some of that chunk is not written yet and the rest needs rewriting.

Easy scenes are so much fun to write. :)

That's true. Sometimes I get into a stride and follow the storyline (or rather, the storyline shows itself to me) fairly easily.

Sometimes it's like someone switches on a light for a minute, then switches it off again - but in the meantime, they've moved me!

That is rather true, in a way, for me, because I have always had a terrible time writing letters to people. Hate that "here is what happened next" stuff, so dreary. Never thought about making it interesting, embellishing like a "real" writer might. Now I don't have time to write letters. Too busy writing stories.

As for the quote, very definitely true.

I can't really speak for anyone else as far as "more difficult" but for me today it wasn't the writing, but rather the erasing that was difficult. I had written my character into a corner..or maybe it was myself that was in the corner. I wasn't enjoying the story. Couldn't figure out where to take it that was interesting to me. So for the passed week or so I've been stalled.

And then this morning I freed myself from the corner. I deleted about 8k and went back to the point in the story when I was enjoying writing it... where there were still interesting options available to my MC...this is my choose your own adventure and I wanted a different adventure than the one I'd started out with.

The good news is that as difficult as it was to let go of those words, new ones flooded into place. Somehow I've ended up with 2353 more than I had this am.

And yes, I had the day off work. How else would this be possible?

Amazing count! Wait, you ended up with 2353 MORE than you had in the morning, AFTER cutting 8k? OMG, that's AWESOME! What's your actual count, do you know?

It's always rough to realize that you have to take a step back and eliminate - it sounds like you did the right thing, though. I'm really happy for you, that the cut has left you more inspired!

Wow - that's great going!

The good news is that as difficult as it was to let go of those words, new ones flooded into place.

That's a really hard lesson to get your head round, I think. When I first started on bigger projects, the idea of deleting so much was really scary because all I could see was the waste. But sometimes it's the only thing to do.

1137 words added to Bothal, making 55147, and the final dance of death and redemption has begun. Who dies and who is redeemed? I think I know.

I don't know about writing being more difficult than it is for other people, but I do know that NOT writing is definitely more difficult for me than (most) other people. The same coin, different sides?

Yay! And a final dance of death and redemption - I like the sound of that :)

I do know that NOT writing is definitely more difficult for me than (most) other people.

*nods* I get that.

I found out the hard way, by not writing for a long time. I was so miserable I could hardly speak.

912 words for the primary, lucky amnesiac getting some attention once more.
Quote: "He couldn’t remember ever being particularly stressed, but some part of his brain could remember the difficulties and responsibilities of being a criminal genius. Now, he’d had massages, gone scuba diving in the warm ocean, hiked over volcanoes, gotten soundly beaten by Butler in a game of golf, danced with the pretty girls who were highly paid to flatter hotel patrons, eaten gourmet food, and generally had a glorious time of it all. He was almost ready to believe that Mastermind had given himself amnesia as part of an overdue vacation."
Tomorrow's problem: making sure I keep working on the primary!!

Meanwhile, I got 885 on the secondary. [info]xaniquen, with whom I'm collaborating on the secondary, and I had a long talk last night in which we plotted out a big important bit of back story; I typed up an outline of that which was another 1646 (I did that in like half an hour, too, it was awesome. :) ) The funny part is that, as is often the case with back story, the chances are high that it will only ever be alluded to. But it was fun to put together anyway. :)

True.

I think when you have been given a gift, being better than people who do not have the gift is easy. The challenge is finding a way to make that gift greater than what it was when you got it.

And that's what makes it so hard.
