Word Count for Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Has it ever happened to you? You read a book and think - this is the book I'm currently writing! Different characters and different setting, of course, but dang! Dude totally stole my idea!

What do you do then? CONTINUE WRITING NO MATTER WHAT! Right?

750 today?

Argh! Mock!

Your story is cooler than the Dude's anyway.

*Dusts off "Nothing new under the sun" speech. Realises it's not necessary. Puts it away again*

That's right - your story will be much better and full of your own ideas, too. Onward!

Oh, alright then - Onward tomorrow!

Something happened that has completely messed up my plan, vague though it was. And I seem to have forgotten a character. Not just his name - a whole character.

I think I'd keep writing even if I think it's been done before, on the grounds that execution is really what matters, and also that finishing the thing would be a worthwhile goal in itself, and that I might have a slightly different take on the idea or illuminate something else about it. But I also try to avoid reading books in the sub-genre I'm writing in while I'm writing. I just find it discouraging.

Nice count!

Everything's been "done before" in some way; I agree that execution is what matters. Hey, if people liked a theme before, they'll like it again! I am a huge fan of archetypes myself.

Yes, I've had that happen before. Well, not the exact same story, but Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game tells basically the same message with a situation similiar in key ways to mine. (Though other people would not immediately see the similarities, at least.) It's frustrating for sure -- but yes, keep writing, definitely!

I've been MIA here for a while, but not because I haven't been working! I just found that posting about paper-based scribbling on my previous round's draft wasn't as helpful -- but I'm dropping in to share that I'm done! I've scribbled as much as this draft needs! I'm planning to start the second draft this week. That's exciting, because that's the one I'll actually be willing to share! People can finally meet Azilie! :)

Finishing is very good, much to be praised. Tosses hat in the air . . .

Discovers it was head. Oh well, wasn't using it that much anyway.

Celebrate!

I just hope I can jump into the next story with as much energy. So far it's been HARD. But, I have Wednesday and Thursday to write on it since I'm going to be covering the phones again down at the front desk of my office and I won't be able to actually work while I'm at work those two days.

Reason for stopping: Gluey eyes.

And yes, today's cited incident happened to me very recently, as detailed in my LJ. After I got over being a mass of woe-is-me blubberiness, I saw stumbling on the book as a blessing because it allowed forced me to examine my story in more depth and find a way to twist it further into a unique idea.

I don't think so with fiction, though I've read books I wish I'd written. I have had something similar with non-fiction (I write history text books) but in that case it's different, as it's more a question of making sure you address whatever that other book is raising in such a way as to show you're aware of it.

665 on current WIP.
114 on an idea that hit me last night and I don't want to lose.

I haven't had that happen. Although, many years ago I created a very unique fantasy character for my first book. Then recently read a book that was published way after mine was written (though sadly not yet published) and discovered a lot of similarities in a character to my very unique one. ::sigh:: So, when I ever do get it published, people will probably think that I ripped off that author's character idea. Oh, well.

Probably zero for the day. I've still got plently of time to recover, but I notice that whenever I take a nap during the early afternoon, my creativity seems to be low on fuel. :| Anyone know of a way to get my energy up without having to take a nap, drink an energy drink (I have palpitations and that's probably going to make it even worse) or drink coffee? :p And exercising is out of the question. Knee is still out of commission.

And, so far, I've been lucky in that department, thank God. Though...the other day, I found out that one of the character names I slaved over trying to come up with was a character name in one of my boyfriend's stories. Valira. :| I told him that I get dibs on her name because I'm actually writing my story while he's still in the "planning" mode and hasn't even started it! hehe
