Word Count - Thursday, July 9, 2009

Moi encore? Well, no quotes for you, mes amis. Just a word of encouragement: Don't give in to a lack of motivation; don't let the blank page, contrary characters, a plodding plot, or busy, hectic life get the best of you today. Show those 750 words who's the boss.

Oops, two past midnight here in the Mozambique Canal. That means no time to find a quote.

Just a call for sound off so I can head to bed and hopefully sweet dreams, in which my characters shall inspire me for tomorrow's today's writing session.

Quite fitting for this week I think...

So how many words did you get written today for some future critic to give you bricks?

Writing the last page of the first draft is the most enjoyable moment in writing. It's one of the most enjoyable moments in life, period. -Nicholas Sparks, author (b. 1965)

Upon looking in my inbox, what should I see but a writing quote at the bottom of my word-for-the-day email. I guess that's a sign that I should be the one asking for the sound off...

How much closer did you get to your last page today?

Everybody has a perspective. Everybody in your scene, including the thug flanking your bad guy, has a reason. They have their own voice, their own identity, their own history. If anyone speaks in such a way that they’re just setting up the next person’s lines, then you don’t get dialogue: you get soundbites. Not everybody has to be funny; not everybody has to be cute; not everybody has to be delightful, and not everybody has to speak, but if you don’t know who everybody is and why they’re there, why they’re feeling what they’re feeling and why they’re doing what they’re doing, then you’re in trouble. --Joss Whedon

(In honor of Whedon's birthday being today.:D)

So--how many words did you dedicate to your villain's thug's raisin d'etre today?

Back in the Game

Hi, Ni90ers!
For those who don't know me, I'm a long term on-again off-again participant. I've finished two novel-length manuscripts thanks to this community, but I fell of the wagon big time late last summer (September) and haven't really gotten much fiction writing done since (I write professionally, and have done plenty, but not fiction. :) ) I'm not sure I'll be able to write every day - my life's kind of a mess right now - but I'm gonna just try to write something each week, and not worry about every day or 750 (just a guess, I'm probably going to write much more but miss multiple days, but that's just a hunch).

My current work in progress was started in mid-April of last year, and I worked on it until September. It's a historical super hero fiction novel which I just think of as "Golden Age," and it's currently 118,951 words; I just finished re-reading what I'd done, and given that, I'd guess I'm probably gone come it at right around 200,000 when it's done. I know, that's ridiculous, but, well, I ultimately expect to split the manuscript into a trilogy, so I guess it's okay. ;)

Anyway, I'm happy to back, and I while I'm not certain this is a good idea for me just now, well, I want to write again, and that's a good feeling, and I'll keep going as long as I can! :)
