Dear Marius and Lucius,

Please stop harassing my baby hamster and taking her out of her cage. I know you both really really want to "play" with her but opening my door, climbing onto my shelf, and snatching her is not going to provoke a favorable reaction from me. Especially since it took me 3 days to find her and I've only now been able to return her to her cage.

I'm still very very angry with both of you. >:[

Dear Mom/Dad,

Why would you put such a fun toy in here and not allow us to play with it? Our prey drives have never been happier. We also like the fun puzzle you put between her and us--trying to open the cage with paws is hard, but rewarding.

Love,
Marius and Lucius

Jazzi and my baby gerbils were the best of friends. It wasn't anything I set out to do, and I would never recommend it. It was done without my permission, in fact, until one day, I realized they would run up to her flailing paw tip and nose-bonk it. Their mother was horrified. Then the big game became "Escape the playground and wiggle back in before the cat paps you with her paw!"

Momma Gerbil even more horrified. The babies were having a blast and Jazzi would just about split herself in two when they'd gang up on her.

By the time it became "We'll distract the cat, you escape the room", Momma had assumed an "It's your funeral" attitude, Jazzi had lost a pound and was all muscle, the gerbils were throwing a fit if I didn't let them out to play with "their" cat every evening, Jazzi was throwing a fit if I didn't let her play with "her" gerbils every evening. I'd count little noses, and tell her, "Jazzi! Go find the gerbil!" and she'd run out of the room. Pretty soon, I'd hear the thumpathumpathumpa of a running cat, and here'd come a gerbil running into the room, tail straight up in the air, doing the Happy Rodent Run, with Jazzi herding it along, patting with her paw.

They absolutely loved each other.

Don't do this with your gerbils. It was a really amazing situation that they decided on their own. I never would have tried this.
