Dear Ciggie

...if you'd stop scoffing your food and water you'd stop puking it right back up. Also? You have teeth for a reason. You're meant to chew your food, not inhale it.

Dear Arrow

We have a new development in the toilet watching, it seems. While you are unbearably cute I am led to believe that you must have been a puppy in a last life because I know of no cat that drinks out of the toilet but you. One Thursday I was happily getting ready for work when you jump up on the toilet seat and start pawing the water in the bowl. Okay, I think, not so bad, but then you start to lick your paw and you repeat this several times! What's up?

I actually had a couple cats that would drink from the toilet.

The hypothesis was that the water in the toilet was super-fresh, while the water in the water bowl wasn't and had dog slobber in it, too.

So it is normal than? But Ciggie shows absolutely no interest in the toilet!

Perfectly normal, after all, they're cats!

When you start to talk about what is "normal" and "abnormal" for cats, though, there will always be at least one person who will stand up and say "no, my cat does this instead of that."

All three of mine drink from the toilet. Katastrophe has even learned to open the lid.

Arrow didn't even take time to learn; she just knows. I put the lid down the other day and came back to it open so she's either a really quick study or she's done it before!

Shadow likes to play in the toilet as well.

IN?

I am just wondering when she's going to fall in to the toilet... it'll happen one day!

There have been a few close calls, and when he was little, I think he may have almost slipped in--- the lid was shut for several months after that. He's fascinated by sinks, faucets, pretty much anything that has running water. He jumps into the tub almost every morning before I shower.

My cat Brutus has fallen into the toilet twice already. I think the second time made him lose his interest in the toilet. My cat Lola on the other hand seems to be getting more curious about it. I've caught her trying to pat at the water and drink from the toilet. I fear the day she falls into the toilet, especially since she's half Brutus's size.

It's worrying when they're much smaller! I wouldn't worry about Ciggie, if he even bothered to do it, because he's just so big but Arrow is about a third of his size!

All the cats I've had have drunk from the toilet, silly things.

I like your icon. Anoki art, right?

Yes, it is an Anoki piece! Indeed, it is fanart, even, of one of my own characters and hers!

I've seen some people suggest putting golf balls in dry cat food, so your cat will have to slow down to eat around them. I wish I'd known about that when dealing with a kitty who tended to binge.

Golf balls? I may very well have to get some to try. He really does scoff quite badly and then he makes himself sick because he's eaten so fast!

I think large pebbles also work well. My old cat used to do the same - I only wish I'd known about this at the time because it would have saved me clearing up a lot of cat sick.

And it'd probably help with his gut problem... I wonder where I can get some pebbles? I do not live in a place where there are non porous rocks... the other cat will eat anything crunchy... hair ties, bits of wood... all sorts of things. It's madness.

Just something too heavy to flick out, and too big to accidentally eat. My two eat out of the same bowl, no matter how many options there are, so they kind of serve this purpose for each other.

Also, toilet-drinking is normal. Enough so that I just noticed the birthday card my mum sent my husband shows it. Mine don't do it because we keep the rather heavy lid closed. Otherwise, someone who won't be named would knock things into it.

Chloe also drinks from the toilet on occasion. I haven't caught her in a while though.

Tora AND Pip both drink from the toilet but with different technique: Pip jumps onto the seat and leans down to drink, Tora stands on her hind legs and shoves her entire head in the bowl while holding onto the rim with her paws.

Arrow is quite a small cat so I am a little worried one day she'll fall in and then she won't be able to get out! I'll come home to a wet kitty in the toilet!

We have the house rule of toilet lid _down_ because mine either drink from it or play in it. They're particularly snuggly kitties, and I refuse to have a toilet-water-covered face pushed into mine (ewwww).

My friends cats drink from the toilet, there was one incident when Ozzy was a kitten, we just heard a meow and then a soft 'plop'. Further investigation found a kitten in the toilet. He however still hasn't learned!

Obviously Ozzy really enjoys the water! Most cats, after all, will learn from a fall into the toilet! ...but not some.

My mother is of the belief that Arrow has no manners and this is why she drinks from the toilet!

Hadassah loves toilet water. It is her favourite. We were warned by her previous daddy but kind of forgot until she was drinking from it all the time!

Sometimes she runs down the hall and into the bathroom just to end up stopped, disappointed, staring at the covered toilet bowl. LOL.

cora drinks out of the toilet on occasion. i solved this by just putting a huge bowl (i mean, the size of a large mixing bowl) of water in a different room from her food. did i fool her? who knows. but she doesn't seem to be drinking out of the toilet any more.
