Jason Scott has posted his presentation "Super Jason Scott Presentation 64" on archive.org. Adrian "Irongeek" Crenshaw has posted his presentation "Hacking Video Tutorial Tips: Getting the point across with screencasting computer videos" to his blog at irongeek.com. Jason has also kindly recorded and linked online his Presentation Presentation from the Thursday night Freeview.

As soon as we get everything cleaned up here at the FTS Compound we'll be putting the rest of the media files online as well as a handy-dandy torrent to pull them all from.

We have posted our second round of presenters for Notacon 6! To date we have received a slew of excellent proposals on interesting topics that cover the whole spectrum of hackerdom. This round of releases demonstrates two trends that have seen a real re-emergence in the community as of late. The first involves hardware hacking from synthesizers to reverse engineering.

The Arduino microcontroller has really taken the community by storm. Droops and Morgellon the Lowtek Mystic will be your guides to understanding and programming the device. From hardware synthesizers to RFID and games, learn of new possibilities using this neat little chip! For those interested in reverse engineering, Travis Goodspeed would love to show you how to have fun with the MSP430 MCU. Similar to Arduino, the MSP430 also offers a host of opportunities for exploration and good, clean hackerly fun and Travis is just the guy to help you figure it out.

The second emergent theme is more an umbrella topic I can only describe as "body hacking". When most people think of hackers, nerds and geeks, the image of chips and wires often comes to mind. However, a lot of interest and research is being devoted into the one set of hardware and software that is as old as we are and just as enigmatic; our bodies and minds. Michele Martaus will be presenting on how cubicle dwellers everywhere can avoid injury and keep our bodies strong.

To cover the other side of the equation, Tottenkoph and Selkie will discuss cognitive function, stress, caffeine and other topics as well as their long and short-term effects on the body. Likewise, Jason Viers will be revisiting a very popular topic at past Notacons and a centuries old game that we can still enjoy to keep our brains sharp in his introduction to Go. Mr. Viers will also be the lead wrangler for our new game room.

Games and diversions have always been an important part of our culture and history. Who better to dissect that history than the estimable Jason Scott, who returns to Notacon to present on a retrospective on the history, importance and groundbreaking work done in Super Mario 64. As many know, Jason keeps himself busy with numerous projects including our sister event, Blockparty. However, like most of us, he also has a keen interest in games and their significance in the bigger picture. Those familiar with his presentations know that the unexpected should be expected, but that in the end you will leave, at a minimum, entertained!

Of course, our community is all of those things and so much more. While we are excited to support those particular threads of interest, we are equally thrilled to include presentations on good old fashioned computer and network security! To that end, CG and g0ne will present on client side penetration testing. The talk will focus on justifying why one should allow client side penetration testing as well as giving penetration testers a basic methodology to conduct client side attacks during their penetration test.

We still have many, many more opportunities for presenters and Notacon and we want to hear from you! Our call for proposals closes in little more than a month and a half, so time is running out! Remember Notacon presenters receive complimentary admission to Notacon for themselves and a guest as well as other nifty goodies.

If presenting is not your speed, then make sure you register for Notacon and book your room soon!

For those who have slacked on registering for Notacon until the very last moment, you are in luck! Online registration will be open through Tuesday, March 25th @ 7 PM Eastern time.

Please check our room and ride share board. There are always a lot of people who have either an extra seat in their car or who need some floorspace to crash on for Notacon. Help out those in our community by getting involved!

New Notacon Blog

It's been awhile since anything was posted to this community!

The first few speakers have been listed on the website, events are getting planned and finalized, and in the midst of a server crash from hell the Notacon Blog was born. I'm not sure yet if we'll try to somehow synchronize blog posts and livejournal or what, but all the old information from the news feed will be posted to blog.notacon as well as other announcements and writeups as they come around.

So be sure to check out the blog!

Three quick notes for everyone,

A reminder that Pre-registration closes this Friday @ 9PM EST. We are
currently hovering at around 200 pre-registrations, with the $60 block
quickly dwindling. Note that prices at the door will be $80. If you're in
the mood to save $20, now is the time!

Second, we blew well past our hotel block for this year and the hotel is
quickly booking up. If you want to ensure a room at the Holiday Inn,
specifically around all of your fellow Notacon attendees, NOW is the time to
book that room. Make sure you use the link on our website, or use the "not"
promotional code to get the conference rate. We cannot guarantee that rate,
as the block is closed, but the hotel has been generous in extending it to
late room reservations.

Finally, if you want a copy of the Notacon audio and video files, or even
just a couple, we have the full set of media archives on bittorrent. There
are currently a number of very healthy and very fast seeds. Save us some
server bandwidth and use torrents!

The official room block for Notacon closed today. If you have not yet booked your room, secure one now. There are likely still rooms available, but we cannot guarantee the conference rate. You will need to work with the hotel directly.

If you have not yet registered for Notacon, pre-registration will close on April 20th at 9pm. After that time, any remaining registrations will be available at the door for $80, so save yourself some cash!

Blockparty competition information is available. All registered Notacon attendees are invited to participate! (Let's just say that Blockparty has some really great prizes.)

Last year I started a thread on the Notacon Forums about what Notacon means to you and what you'd like to see at Notacon.

As things are ramping up in the background, it seems like a reasonable point to pose this question again.

What would you like to see at Notacon 4?

Remember to keep an eye on our news items. It's been a little slow, but there's a lot of things coming down the pipe in the next 4+ months and they'll be mentioned there first.

Blockparty @ Notacon

Ever been to a demoparty? No?

Well, if you attend Notacon in 2007, you'll get your chance.

This year Notacon will combine forces with a new demo party in North America called Blockparty. What is a demo party, you ask? To quote their site,

"If you're new to the idea of a demoparty, the concept is simple: set up a stage, invite programmers, artists and musicians from around the world to enter competitions, watch in amazement what comes out, and then hand out prizes to the best of the bunch."

Both events under one roof will definitely kick more art, music and creativity in the event and further our goal of bridging the gap between art and technology, as well as fostering a sense of community among all open-minded technology buffs.

All Notacon attendees can pariticpate in Blockparty events and vise-versa.

More information will be available as it becomes available, in the mean time, please chekc out the Blockparty website.

As an additional reminder, please note that both our Call for Proposals and
Pre-registration are open!

bleakenigma and I will be hitting up HOPE this weekend in New York City. I hope we'll see a few of you there.

We might need help spreading fliers and the word around, and will likely have a "wear your notacon shirt day" like we've done the last couple of years. I'll try to post more details here as it gets closer.
