New Grad Student Looking For Housing

I'll be started grad school at NU in the fall in industrial engineering. In my last year of undergrad we found a roommate via LJ and it worked out great. This community doesn't seem to get much traffic, but I'll try anyway.

I'm looking for something like this: something close-ish to campus (I guess anywhere in Evanston or Rogers Park works, but the closer the better). A room in a house/apartment with people who are friends - I don't want to be a boarder or live with people that I only say hi to. Part of the point is to make friends. I don't care if you're a house full of undergrads or grads, and male or female isn't an issue. I'm a guy. I'm not a neat freak but I don't want to live in a pigsty. I'm into riding my bike (I'm not bringing a car). I prefer board games and drinking games to video games. I don't listen to metal, and I probably haven't heard of half of the bands you like because I'm too lazy to be a music snob. If you need a housemate for next year, I'm your guy. My stipend is decent so I can afford a good amount.

Tasty

Found this Thai place which is out in Skokie and WILL deliver to us!! They have two menus, one has a lot of the regular Thai food as known in most American Thai restaurants, and a 2nd one they they have not as yet bothered to translate into English, with far more authentic dishes that aren't to U.S. taste. The owner assures me that they will soon be posting these dishes to their web site as well because there's been so much demand for it.

http://thaipavilionskokie.com/menus/skokie

And if you can get out there, they have an all you can eat Thai lunch buffet for $7, which includes allowing you to fill one carry out container full of something from the buffet.

I figured I would post this here since the NU transfer group is dead.

I'll try to make this as short as possible. Basically, I applied ED to Northwestern and didn't get in; thus, I went to NYU. However, I really think that NYU is really not the place for me, and plus, I can't get the idea of Northwestern out of my head. Therefore, I'm going to try and transfer. That being said, I have a few questions:

Has anyone transferred? Gotten rejected then accepted? Stories?

When exactly did you find out whether you were accepted for transfer admission?

Were there any problems that you had with transferring?

Also, I am just wondering, does it make a difference if I've done well at NYU? I will have a GPA between 3.8 and 3.9 (they haven't been officially calculated yet), and like, do you guys see NYU as a good school as compared to NU? I always did, but I don't know what other people thought.

Lastly, I have some mediocre SAT II's (650s) that I don't know if I should submit or not. I would rather not just because all of my other test scores/grades are high, but does it hurt me in any way if I don't?

Thank you guys so much for any response.

NU SigmaXi Sponsoring CHEAP Grass-Roots Science Event Tomorrow Night (9/19)

The Northwestern University chapter of Sigma Xi proudly announces our first-ever Science Cafe tomorrow in Evanston!

Science Cafe (known in Europe as "Cafe Scientifique"), is a place where for the price of a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, or a mug of beer, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Across the country, meetings are taking place in cafes, bars, and restaurants, by mixing a scientist with an interested and inquisitive audience and letting the conversation flow. No scientific background is required; this discussion is intended for the general pub-going public.

Tomorrow's topic is:
"Giant Earthquakes in the Midwest: Hazard, Hype, and Hard Choices"
Presenter: Professor Seth Stein

In 1990 an amateur seismologist caused near-panic by predicting a major earthquake in the Midwest's New Madrid zone, where large earthquakes struck during 1811-12. Schools and businesses closed. People either left the area, or stocked up on emergency supplies, and raced to buy earthquake insurance. News crews mobbed the tiny river town of New Madrid, MO. The earthquake, of course, never happened.

The panic resulted in part because the public hears a steady drumbeat of earthquake information - a mix of science and hype. They are told that large earthquakes occurred in 1811-12 (true), that these were the largest ever in the US (hype), that there is a hazard from future earthquakes (true), similar risks to those in California (hype). Communities must decide whether to, as the government argues, adopt building standards as stringent as in CA, or whether these billions of dollars would be better used otherwise.

Dr. Stein will explore these issues by explaining how seismic hazards are assessed, which is a game of chance that we play against nature - without knowing the rules. This involves estimating how large future earthquakes will be, how often they will happen, and how much shaking they will generate. He will discuss the data: satellite measurements of ground movement, newspaper accounts of old earthquakes, seismometer records, and geologic deposits, as he outlines the issues we face.

Date: September 19
Time: 6 - 7:30 pm
Location: The Celtic Knot, 626 Church St., Evanston
(metered parking along street, parking garage at corner of Church and Chicago Ave)

Evanston Workout Areas

Hey guys! I'm moving in a little less than two weeks - I am so excited. I'm living in Evanston and I'm trying to get a feel for the city.

This is kind of a random question, but maybe you guys have some answers: I do a ton of boxing/kickboxing, do you know if there's any good martial arts clubs (especially kickboxing) in or around the Evanston area?

As well, I like to supplement this with yoga. Are there any good yoga classes in Evanston (no hatha - preferably ashtanga or power)?

Thanks!

Help? So Much Help, Please.

Hi. I know this isn't really a newbie place, but the nu_11 community is just new people so they can only help me as much as I can help myself (which is not at all).

Since I've been admitted, it seems like NU isn't doing anything at all. I just filled out the Housing Form, basically by saying "South is supposed to be less party-y, here's five randomly picked houses" (if that's not true, and South is party-y, don't tell me. I can't change it now so I don't want to know). And now I'm supposed to pick Freshman Seminars, but I'm supposed to coordinate that with my classes, which I won't be choosing until September. So how am I supposed to choose Freshman Seminars without knowing my class schedule? And how am I supposed to decide my classes?

I'm a girl, Pre-Med (Chemistry), from Florida, and utterly confused. EMail communication, or AIM, or here, or whatever. Please. Honestly, I'm really very confused and any help would be so appreciated.

It's the Willard apartments, which are about a five minute walk to campus and Evanston, is across the street from White Hen if you get the munchies at 2 in the morning, and is two blocks from the Foster El station. If anyone has any interest subleting this summer, for one, two or three people, please post here. Thanks guys.

Dividing Rent.

3 of my friends and I are living in a 3 bedroom apartment next year. 2 are sharing the largest room and 2 get singles.
The monthly rent is $2300. The 2 that are sharing are paying $535 a month and the 2 getting singles are paying $615 a month. So that's an $80 difference per month.

Does this seem fair to you? I think that the difference is a bit much, but then again, I've never shared an apartment before so I don't know how these things usually work.

Please let me know what you think!
Thank you in advance!

Financial Aid Woes

I got accepted into Northwestern and will be attending in the Fall Quarter. I was wondering if anyone who is an independent student on the FAFSA (over 24 years old) had any issues with the Expected Contributions. I made peanuts in 2006 (under 20k), so I'm wondering if the hidesously expensive tuition might have a shot at being paid for by the Department of Education? Is it on a sliding scale according to tuition costs? I'm pretty novice at this, thanks!

generally, how low does a person's housing priority number have to be in order to get a room in Kemper? When you sign up to live there, can you sign up for a single room alone, or do you have to go to sign up already knowing who your roommates are going to be?

thanks

Need a place to live?

Hey everyone,

I'm about to sign a lease on a 2 bedroom apartment, but the girl I was going to live with had to back out, so I'm looking for a roommate!

It's a large two bedroom apartment at Davis and Maple, just refurnished with new kitchen and bathroom appliances and central air/heat. Rent is $1200/month, which we would share, along with all other bills. I’ll be moving in June 1st with a year lease, and I’d want my roommate to do the same. We would have to buy furniture together (or if you’ve already got some, that’s great!)

A little bit about me: I’m 20, female, nonsmoker, vegetarian, currently a junior studying psychology and creative writing. I’ve got a part-time job and I’m trying to learn to play the guitar.

I'm looking for someone preferably female, nonsmoker (or a smoker willing to smoke outside). It’s a “calm” building, so no huge parties.

If you're interested, just reply here or send me an email at pipersparrow@gmail.com so we can talk and maybe meet up.

Has anyone lived here? I am considering it - it looks very pricey though, is it worthwhile to do?

As well, if I were to put in an application now, how long would it be until I know that I've been accepted/get an address?

Thanks again guys. Cheers from Canada.
