This is a community specifically for those who identify as Northern Religionists, whether they identify as Heathen, Pagan, or even Wiccan.

Though this community may seem like it is reinventing the wheel of

badheathens, it is not. I would daresay that people in BH are disgruntled over mainstream Heathenry but still fit into it or its periphery, and are seeking validation from such. This community is not only specifically for those who are told, repeatedly, "you're doing it wrong" by more mainstream Asatru types, it is for those who are done, full stop, with trying to appeal to Asatruar. We can't make them change. But we can change ourselves, shaping a path that is reasonable for *our own* spiritual needs. Not theirs.

This means

northerntrad is not a community of "HAY GUISE is this (state heresy here) really so bad?" We all know we are "doing it wrong". We are not here to argue over whether or not something is in the Lore, or whether maybe your non-Nordic heritage is OK, or whether dual-trad, multi-trad or Witchy practices are acceptable, or whether Loki worship or talking/being intimate with the Gods is actually "proper". Either you know where you stand on issues, or you don't, and you do not need anyone to validate the working out of your own Wyrd.

This community is specifically to give support to those who:

-- for whatever reason have stopped identifying as "mainstream Asatru" for reasons of belief, practice, or distaste of the greater Heathen community in the US

-- or those who were considering becoming Asatru and for whatever reason have decided not to, but still enjoy the Nordic Gods and culture.

This is a place to vent about asshattery we have seen, and also to discuss heretical ideas, including mystical woo-ish ones... to ponder the spiritual paths we are forging, away from mainstream US Asatru into something new, different, and brave. There are communities for mystics but it is not fair to burden non-Heathens with things specific to the Northern Tradition, including some of the flak we have gotten.

Questioning authority and not following it blindly is a virtue here. But rebellion for its own sake is not wise.

The only real requirements for membership are:

-- You cannot be a current member of a mainstream community such as the AFA or OR (obvious choices), or The Troth. You cannot be in the process of joining such group or considering doing so in the future. We do not need wankstorms started by people saying "our group is not racist" or "our group is open to this or that". We have been in organizations, we have dealt with individuals within these organizations. We know what's going on.

-- Dealings with the Nordic pantheon primarily and consistently (other than, "I'm eclectic but got tapped by Odin once and don't know what to do"), even if one works with other Deities or a non-Nordic magickal system. Wiccans are welcome. People identifying as dual-trad are welcome. If you have a problem with dealing with OMG Wiccans and Pagans, don't apply.

-- Open-mindedness, but not so open that one's brains fall out.

-- It is preferred that you are a hard polytheist and do not insult the Gods by calling Them "aspects of The One" or "thoughtforms".

-- It is preferred that you do not habitually refer to yourself as an Asatruar.

-- The Folkish are not welcome here, full stop.

-- Don't be a drama queen.

Due to the high volume of trolling on LJ, membership is moderated and commenting is strictly friends-only. Posts to this community are set to "friends-only" by default and if you decide to change the setting on your own post to public you should be relatively flame-proof, since this is the type of community that will get you flak from Heathens who have nothing better to do than watch what we're saying.

This community has a ZERO TOLERANCE for flaming. Dissent is one thing. Being obnoxious is another. Since we are all here for the reason of "doing it wrong" by US Heathenry standards, we should at least agree to be pleasant to one another.

If you apply to this community and we feel you are here to cause trouble or that you obviously haven't read the damn user info and ergo will not be a good fit, you won't get in, no harm no foul.
