Students who ever ate at Restaurant Row?

Hi everyone - I'm writing an article for tomorrow's Huntington News about Restaurant Row. In case you hadn't heard, an agreement was reached last week that will allow restaurants like El Pelon and Thornton's Fenway Grille to reopen. If you have two seconds to comment tonight, that would be great! Please e-mail me at rice.anna@husky.neu.edu with your phone number & I will call you asap. Thanks!

Ohh and also, if you shop or go out at Downtown Crossing ever, I need to talk to you as well!

Stats Class

Hey,

I am a journalism major looking to fulfill my level 2 math requirement. I don't very much like math and so I'm looking into taking Statistics in Psychology with Professor Harkins hoping that it's not very difficult. Has anyone taken this class? Specifically anyone who doesn't really like math? Is it hard?

Thanks!

Northeastern calls an end to football

Becoming successful is deemed too costly Northeastern University plans to announce today that it is ending its football program after 74 seasons, saying it is unwilling to invest the millions of dollars needed to improve the team to meet the school’s ambitions.

President Joseph E. Aoun and the board of trustees endorsed the move Friday after an extensive, two-year review of the athletic program by its director, Peter Roby. The decision to eliminate football follows six straight losing seasons and sparse game attendance at a school whose ice rink often sells out for hockey.

Northeastern football did not fall victim to the recession or a fund-raising crunch, university officials said. Instead, school officials came to terms with the hard truth that the $3 million-plus annual program needed more help - millions more each year - than Northeastern wanted to give.

RIP Northeastern football, 1933-2009. Anyone a big fan? I never went to a game during undergrad (2002-2006), but it's still sad for the team and that NU failed in this regard. Though it does make sense financially. I agree with the decision just kind of sad anyways.

Bells

Today and yesterday at noon and 6pm I've heard bells coming from somewhere- both times America the Beautiful was played, but at noon they went on for awhile. There were some short breaks, but when I left campus around 12:45 they were still going. Anyone know why, or where they're coming from? I think I heard them one day last weekend too.

failing?

hey guys - junior here with a question i've never thought i'd have to ask...
i'm not doing so well this semester for so many, many reasons.

what happens when you fail a course?
this might sound like the dumbest question ever, and i'm sorry if it is.  i looked around the registrar's website and did my degree audit and am still a little confused.

does it count as completing the class?  will i have to retake it?
it's a required course in the sense that i have to take 4 level 400 courses in that area and this is one i chose.  so i could repeat it, if need be, or just pick another one another semester.

the thing is, i've switched majors a few times and really need to stay on track to graduate on time and not pay northeastern even more of my money.  i don't really want to withdraw, for the chance that i just might turn everything around and not fail.

any help is appreciated, sorry if i'm a complete idiot.

Anyone majoring in industrial engineering or know of anyone?

How is it? If you're fairly decent at math but not great, are the calculus and physics classes difficult to get through?

Will I be shooting myself in the foot?
... rhetorical question.

Oh and I am currently an English major, but find myself way bored (no work. ever.) and way more interested in my math/science classes... being game theory and astronomy which I'm sure are a great deal easier than what I would be taking if I decide to switch/do a double (or major/minor, the minor being in English).

I'm about to start my last semester and that means that I not only have to take my science requirement, but do rather well in the class as well. And since Natural Disasters & Catastrophes sounded like the best way to do so, that's what I've signed on for.

I've heard varying things about the class, but was overjoyed to find out that the book was merely recommended.

For those of you who have taken this class - just how much would you "recommend" such an investment? I'm terrible at anything science-related, but I've also heard that exam questions aren't exceptionally relevant to the material covered, i.e., who narrated some film.

Looking for roommates?

Hi! My name's Michelle and I'm going to be a middler at NU this year. After having put it off for way too long, I'm looking at places to live next year and hoping to find another roommate or two!  At this point we have a couple people committed to living together, (myself, a 21 year old guy, and a 21 year old girl, all NU undergrads) but we just went and saw some gorgeous 5BRs, so if we take one we'll have 1-2 spots available!  We're going to haggle to get the price lowered (and since a 5BR is going to be so hard for the dealer to move this late that seems feasible), so with utilities it would be about 800-900 a month, which is also the range we're looking at for any other places we might choose.  We're looking at some right on campus, and others down Mass Ave a bit so up to 15 minutes walk from campus into the South End.  Seriously though, this 5BR we saw down by Mass Ave and Washington is absolutely gorgeous, 3 floor townhouse with tons of windows and right in the adorable part of the South End... I'm really hoping it's the one we end up in!
So - If you would be interested in possibly living together with other studious, respectful, fun people, send me a message!  Male, female, straight, gay, no problem as long as you're a nice, drama-free person.  And if you know anyone who's looking too please refer them to this message haha since it's getting late to be doing this.  My email's bellaboo1316@aol.com. (so email me OR use that to facebook me!) Looking forward to hearing from you! Michelle :)
PS - one of the bedrooms is HUGE so if you have a friend you'd like to share a BR with we can easily set it up to share that one.  Also, I can send you pics of this 5BR i'm telling you about if you want!

Better Place Realty?

Hi, everyone. I am in the process of looking for an apartment for the first time and was wondering if anyone has ever dealt with Better Place Realty on Tremont Street. I had an agent show me around a couple apartments today and I really liked one of them, but I want to make sure they aren't scummy before I sign anything. I checked Google and found a couple reviews, but it would be great to hear some personal accounts from NU students. Since this is my first time ever renting and the friend I am moving with is financially independent, we have had a rather difficult time finding someone to give us a chance. I just want to be able to get my foot in the door and have at least some kind of landlord reference, so hopefully these people aren't too bad.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Room Still Available

Hello, folks

Sorry to bug you all again: I still have one room available for the Septempber '09 to August '10 rental period. The room is $650/month, located on Lawn Street near the Heath Street stop, and is in a really awesome apartment. It's right by Jamaica Plain, five minutes from a Stop and Shop, and really close to the Jackson Square stop on the Orange Line. You're on your own for furniture in the bedroom, but there is some stuff already in the apartment. If you're interested, please contact me here or by e-mail: epynephrin [at] gmail [dot] com.

You'll have two roommates: myself and a girl (and cat) in the other downstairs room. There are two porches, front and back, a large kitchen and living room, two bathrooms, a fireplace, and skylights. It's on the third floor, and was the owner's unit. Seriously sweet apartment, and one I don't want to leave!

some photos )

Please contact me if you are serious! Thanks for your time.

E-mail headline from The Huntington News (nee NU News):

"BREAKING NEWS: CORNICE COLLAPSE WEB UPDATE: Cause of fall still undetermined; NU officials send university-wide ale"

Two points of contention:
1. "Still undetermined" is not really much of an update, and certainly does not warrant headline status in a "breaking news" e-mail.
2. Where may I pick up my "university-wide ale"?

I am able to take every class I need to graduate in the next year except for one.  It is a requirement for my major but it's only offered every other year and the last time it was offered, I was studying abroad.

I'm just wondering what my options are (besides staying the extra year for one class).  I've heard about Consortium schools NU students can take classes at, but never found anything about the through the NU website.  Can anyone give me any info on this?

Physics for Engineers Textbook

If anyone needs the textbook/lab manual/iClicker/WebAssign package for Physics for Engineers 1 and 2, I am hoping to get rid of mine before I move out of my current apartment. I think it will be a better deal for both parties if I can sell it directly.

-The book is brand new, it just sat in a drawer
-The iClicker is missing the battery cover on the back (I just covered it with packing tape)
-The lab manual is written in a lot (if that bothers you I will sell you the other stuff without the lab manual and you can get a new one from Gnomon copy)
-The WebAssign "scratch ticket" with the access code has not been scratched off, so you'll know it is a new, unused code. The ticket is only for one semester, so you'll have to buy a second ticket if you're taking physics 1 and 2.

If anyone is interested, check out how much it would cost you to get this stuff elsewhere and then make me an offer. I am on campus so I can meet whenever.

You can comment here or email kilcoyne.h@neu.edu
And if for some reason you want pictures I can post some...

SUMMESTER

Hey All,

Quick Question.....

The Summester post disappeared off of the Announcements on MyNEU like it always does because I suspect as usual I am about to be but fucked by NU.

I wanted to go to Rent to to Martha's Vineyard and of course now neither is listed in the list of Summester events on the website with the list of events.

Any input? Does anybody know if they are still going to happen?

I fucking hate this school sometimes..... heaven forbid they do something for everyone, or stick to a commitment.

Thank You

My two roommates will be moving out in September, and I don't want to.
  1. I hate moving
  2. I truly love my apartment
That said, I will have two rooms available and I really, really need to fill them in order to keep the apartment. If you're looking for a place to live come September, have you considered Lawn Street at the Jamaica Plain/Mission Hill border?

The Apartment:
Formerly the Owners' unit, a two floor, 3-bedroom (two down, one up) apartment with a kitchen, two decks (front and back with steps). A bathroom on each level, a really decently sized kitchen, and a really nice street. The hot water is partially run by a set of solar panels on the roof.

Here's what you get:
  • Easy access to the Green Line's Heath St. Stop, fairly close to Jackson Square on the Orange.
  • Few minutes walk to a Stop and Shop, Gamestop, and Centre Street.
  • A decent room at a fair price.
  • Hot water included
  • Quiet street, nice neighbors, close to a plot of public gardens.
  • And you have to deal with me, and my movie collection.
What you need to do:
Leave me a comment. I have two rooms, and when word gets out people will be all over them!

Crossposted to [info]beantownkids, apologies to members of both.
Edit: rooms are $650, and as we're renewing the lease, I believe first/last/security are taken care of. Will need to double-check with existing roommates. There is no fee, unless you want to pay me simply for the fun of it! For further information, you can also e-mail me at epynephrin [at] gmail [dot] com (Mon, 10:54AM)

Storage

I need a storage place for 2 months, that does pickup and delivery. Suggestions?

I lived in DP for Summer 1 and left all my stuff in a spare closet, since my roommate said she was okay with storing the things there. I talked to the RD and apparently move out for coop students (like my roommate) is earlier, so I can't keep my things there anymore. I'm going on a Dialogue until August 20 and won't be back until after the move out date. I'm back in Boston for about 8 hrs on July 2 before flight abroad, and need to find a storage place for my things asap. I'm from CA so I can't exactly move everything back home.

Everything's all packed up in garbage bags, I just need to find an affordable place to hold my stuff. I thought about Public Storage but don't have a car and can't rent a car to bring my things there.

Hair salons

I entered a hair salon last week with semi-decent hair; I walked out with a mullet. Needless to say, each day that I look in the mirror and see my hair, I die a little inside.
Does anyone know where I can find a reasonably priced salon? Even a mediocre haircut is better than what I have and I can't bear to shell out another $45.

Finding Off-Campus Apartments

As a relatively new graduate student at Northeastern, it's been pretty tough for me to find affordable, off-campus housing.  Craigslist has a lot of ads, but searching is pretty tough and I seem to see a lot of duplicates, not to mention trolls and fake postings.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I got together with a few friends and we contacted some local landlords and rental companies.  A few days ago, we finished putting together a free website that (we think) is a little easier to use and a little more effective when searching for apartments.  There's no signup or login, and it's completely free to use, so if any fellow Huskies find it helpful, I think we'll consider ourselves satisfied.

Please take a look:

Thank you!

I'm surprised not to see any posts about this yet, but housing has just been posted.

First I want to make sure I'm assuming correctly. It said I'm in 110-room#. The only thing that makes sense is St. Stephen. So presuming that is correct, anyone mind telling me what housing is like on St. Stephen, specifically for a 2-person "apartment"?

Haha, I'm sure anything will be better than last year: economy double with a glamorous view of my neighbor building's fire escape.

So for the last bit of co-op I'll be needing to keep a car because the dude I carpool with is leaving. My land lord is an asshole and charges an exorbitant amount to park behind my house. I'm living in my apartment for two more months so it's not worth switching insurance and all just for the sticker. What streets are kosher to park on with an out of state plate overnight kind of near st. alphonsus? I know it'll probably be a hike to my car every morning but it's worth saving the money. Everytime I look for a place it's either 2 spots for visitor around oswald and calumet (WHICH ARE ALWAYS TAKEN) or resident-only ville land.

Resnet

My laptop decided to go into a coma. I know the problem and how to fix it etc., etc., but Resnet has that nice big computer that lets you back up your files no matter how rebellious your machine happens to feel.

I am currently on my (one and only?) summer break and am not officially enrolled again until next Fall. Can I still use Resnet and its SUPERCOMPUTER? Thanks in advance!

For anybody who's ever wondered, apparently the Registrar is an actual individual. With a real name and a face and everything that a real person has (well, except for a soul, perhaps). This comes as a surprise to me, having always assumed that the Office of the Registrar was just that- an office, and not a person. I always thought it was just like, a team.

I mention this having just gotten into an actual verbal argument with the "Associate Registrar" (or ass registrar, if I may abbrev). I submitted the Status Change form two weeks ago, like I was supposed to, to change my division from supposed-to-have-graduated to graduated-but-stupid, but apparently, said form was lost at some point between front desk and processing desk (how you manage to lose a piece of paper which is supposed to go directly to somebody sitting about 12 feet from you is beyond me, but that's a different discussion for a different time). I reluctantly went and got the form filled out, yet again, at the dean's office, only to find out that I'll also need the course add/drop forms filled out and signed by the instructor, department, Piper from the dining hall, and Aoun's second cousin, once removed. In triplicate. I attempted to argue with three of the flying monkeys at the Registrar's office before the ass registrar came out from behind the curtain and told me I had to get the form signed, no way around it, and that's that.

It pains me that Northeastern doesn't even act like they're in the customer service industry, when really, they should be. Just because students aren't going to transfer schools over this kind of shit doesn't mean we should have to put up with it. This school has gotten enough of our families' money that any retail store would consider us A++, Level 5, Top Priority, Platinum Class customers, and I personally think it's high time they start treating us as such. Sending us around campus in a hunt for wild signatures because they lost paperwork is absurd, and I HATE YOU!

Loans and scholarships

I'm going into my second year at Northeastern and am trying to reapply for the loans (high fives for anyone else who's "excited" about graduating in-debt). How exactly do I go about it? Would it be under the same account name? Do I even need to reapply?

My financial advisor is currently MIA, and I'm too impatient to wait for him. I'm also nervous about doing all this too late.

Also, anyone know of any decent scholarship sites? The amount Northeastern is covering is great and all, but obviously I'm not quite made up of money.

And this is a bit off-topic, but has anyone ever had to take a medical leave? I know I'm guaranteed housing and all if I'm medically cleared by the time fall comes back around, but will it for sure be upperclassman?

Thanks!

Martha's Vineyard

I'm looking to buy a ticket to go on the Martha's Vineyard trip through the Student Activities Office on June 12th. If anyone has an extra or has decided not to go, PLEASE let me know. My friend bought one and by the time I tried, they were sold out. I don't want her to have to go alone!

Parking for Fall

Okay possibly another stupid question.

I'm living in Douglass Park next Fall, and will be on a co-op that requires me to have a car. I know you can park on Columbus for free, sooo is it wise of me to forgo a parking pass? They're 50% off for co-op kids this go-round, so I'm kind of inclined to just get it, but if it's really doable without one I'd rather save myself the $375.

Also any info about living in Doulass would be cool too. Does it suck? Is it as nice as the photos look?

Thanks guys!

What happens to packages that get mailed to your residence hall when you're home for summer?

I bought something off eBay the other day and the guy shipped it to my address at school- Speare Hall, even though I'm home for summer vacation. Will they automatically forward it to my house or do I have to contact someone to do it for me?
