Characters/Pairing: Loki, mentions of Balder, Hod, Apollo, Achilles and Paris. Brief mention of Loki/Apollo.

Havamal study, xposted [26 Feb 2009|08:49am]

othila_dagaz
Hello to all,

I am looking for an in-depth study of the Havamal, not just a
different translation. Something that goes verse-by-verse explaining
what it may possibly mean. I have been unsuccessful with google
searches. Any websites or books, or even your own personal notes will
be appreciated.

Thank you!

So, as I'm winding my way through the Havamal with a real intent for understanding what I'm reading, I've run across the phrase 'weapons and weeds', followed by a reference to hangings 'weeds' on wooden men. When I did a web search for 'weapons and weeds', I found a translation of Beowulf that was likewise unhelpful.

My first instinct is to assume that this is some sort of identifying clothing, but I want to make sure I understand the passages correctly.

Help, anyone? Its greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Raen.

In the most non-offensive way possible,
I have found some ambiguous or otherwise "odd" content in some posts,
And I was just wondering,
Does this community in anyway stand for Racism or Nazism?
Please don't leave long sugar coated replies,
Just yes or no with a small explanation
Deep apologies if I have confused anything.
I thought this was pureply for people who are interested in mythology,
Nothing political or religious,
Thank you,
Can I stress that I do not post this with any aggression whatsoever,
And am now worrying if it at least sounds *passive* aggressive.:/

So, I'm coming to a point in my spiritual and magical path where I feel the need to light the proverbial fire under my ass. I've fallen way behind in my rune studies, and have never really studied seiðr. I've always had an affinity for the runes, and really do ken them, but I hit a point of non-progression a few years back. I've also always had a strong desire to learn about shamanism, especially as it pertains to Nordic culture. So I was thinking that I should start looking to Freyja for guidance. I asked Oðinn to send Freyja into my life, that I might learn seiðr from her, as he did. Since then, I've been thinking that these are not the Christian "give me stuff, Gods" type of gods, and that I need to work towards this goal myself, and seek Freyja out, rather than beseeching her to come to me (or worse, ask Oðinn to send her... OOOOPS!)

I'm not sure where to start, however, and talking to myself via this website (and probably LJ) will be my recourse.

So here we are, at phase one, commitment.

I, Beowulfe, son of Oðinn, do hereby declare my intent and devotion to the study of seiðr, wheresoever that that course may take my Path.

A Question of Witches [21 May 2008|03:24pm]

angely78
My, it's been quiet in here. I'll ask a question to stir things up a bit.

I've been doing a little research on the history of the witch in norse literature. Specifically, to find out what they were called. I know volva was a seeress, that a seidh- or seid- kona was like a sorceress/wise woman/practioner of seidr as taught by Freya, that Heide could either be the goddess one invokes or a term for those women who did. Like the concept of the soul, death, and the afterlife in nordic mythology, it seems to be very open to interpretation.

Anyone here care to weigh in with their opinion and/or word of choice?

I searched Google for a bit and only came up with things related to Wicca. While I was reading I, Coriander for my YA lit. class, the mention of a scrying mirror caught my attention. Since the book draws heavily on mythology, I was wondering whether Odin had a scrying mirror.

Anyways, thanks for the help!!!

I've never seen fan fiction posted in this community, but I've written a Norse mythology fan fiction story for the Yuletide fan fiction exchange this year, and I thought that it might be the sort of thing members of a community such as this might appreciate.

Title: A Place for Cleverness
Fandom: Norse Mythology
Character/Pairing: Loki, Odin, Thor, Freya, Odin/Loki, Loki/Freya
Summary: The tale of how and why Loki came to Asgard.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Implied sex, blood, and the trickery of an amoral god of mischief.

Inmate Says He Needs Thor's Hammer, Drum [21 Dec 2007|04:30pm]

(12-21) 14:28 PST SALT LAKE CITY, (AP) --

An inmate is suing the Utah Department of Corrections for denying him his right to practice an ancient Nordic religion while behind bars.

Michael Polk is serving time for aggravated assault and robbery. He filed a lawsuit against corrections officials in federal court, accusing them of denying him religious items that he says are necessary to practice the Asatru religion.

The religion worships ancient Nordic gods like Odin, Thor, Tyr and Heimdal.

In the lawsuit, Polk says he has been a member of the Asatru faith since 2005, and in order to properly practice it he needs items including: a Thor's Hammer, a prayer cloth, a Mead Horn used for drinking Wassail, a drum made of wood and boar skin, a rune staff and a sword.

A Raven Question [01 Dec 2007|12:03pm]

angely78
As I ramble around the internet, looking for anything and everything on Odin's Ravens, I came across this little site:

http://web.telia.com/~u85903393/hugin_och_munin_english.html

In the section dubbed "Mythology" the web-author states that the translations of "Hugin" (also Huginn, and I've seen it as Hugnin too), and Munin (Muninn) that one normally sees, i.e Thought and Memory, are incorrect. What I'd like to know is, how do we know they're incorrect, and if so, what are the correct translations? This is vital for my book, as I base my ravens' identities on them being "Thought" and "Memory".

So... haha... Thoughts? Memories?

Heimdall & Mimir's Well [24 Nov 2007|10:50pm]

snowmoon3
[ music | "Mein Herz brennt" by Rammstein ]

Hi everyone. I am working on an assignment for one of my grad classes and I could use a little help. The class is Philosophy of Education & Teaching Practice and the assignment is to create a brochure (so, not a hard assignment!) for a school of our own creation using whichever educational philosophy we most agree with. I am choosing to do a reconstructionist school with teaching practices based in pragmatism and postmodernism.

The premise for the school (this idea came to me after a conversation with a friend) is that it is to be a heathen private school. Along with state requirements, they'll also study modern Icelandic as well as herbalism, runes, norse mythology, and other things of this nature.

Right now, I'm working on a name for the school and I keep getting sidetracked by little details. I have some information that leads me to think that I could name the school after Heimdall but in crosschecking that information, I think my research (very old research, btw) might be off. This is what I have for Heimdall, let me know if something is glaringly wrong?

"Heimdall: He is the God of light and guardian of the rainbow bridge. He is the son of nine mothers, the daughters of Geirrendour. He was born at the end of the world and was raised by the force of the earth, seawater, and the blood of the boar. He eventually kills Loki. He symbolizes education, teaching, and protection. The hall of Heimdall is Himinbjorg, The Cliffs of Heaven. His horse was named Gulltop. Because of his shining, golden teeth, he is also called Gullintani (gold tooth)."

If naming the school for Heimdall is not a good idea, I was also thinking of naming it for either Mimir or Mimir's Well - my only concern for naming it after the well is the high price one must pay for a drink of the well. Do you think it would be a bad omen to name a school for the well?

If you have any other input (curriculum or anything else related to the school) or name ideas, please let me know but my main question is on whether it's just a really bad idea to name it for either Heimdall, Mimir, or Mimir's Well. Thanks.

New member and plea for recs! [09 Nov 2007|11:46am]

Hello! I just joined today, and I wanted to introduce myself and ask for your help.

I'm a 24-year-old Californian, and I've always had a keen interest in various mythologies, but I have only recently begun to peek into the fascinating world of Norse mythology. I'm hoping the community can recommend some good books for me to start educating myself. I'm looking for anything published in or translated to English, from storybook retellings of famous myths to primary texts to analytical essays to encyclopedias of deities and heroic figures. Basically, for someone just starting to learn about Norse mythology, what are the vital books I should be reading?

Thank you so much for your time.

Hela [28 Oct 2007|06:26pm]

stormraven37

Ok, so I have this Hela thing going on.  For lack of better words I believe I'm being called to be A Steward for Her.  Again - Not sure that is the right word but it's all that is coming to my pretty scrambled brain right now.

In any case, She is telling me to obtain something that symbolizes Her - likely Jewelry - which I am to wear.  I have many symbols for Odhinn; I wear them constantly as I am his Dottir.  They are tattoos and will never be separate from me.    So now, I'm on a bit of a Quest one might say to find something that is symbolic of Hela.  I'm really not sure where to begin.  I have some ideas but I'm just not sure how to go about finding what I want.  I'm also not sure if I'm having the right ideas.  So I'm looking for a bit of help here.  Some of my ideas are thus:

An Archway - IE Hels Gateway
A Key - to unlock The Gateway
A snowflake or icicle - Representative of the Realm
A Well - the well of Souls
An Orobouros - the life/death/rebirth cycle (of note:  I've always wanted an Orobouros tattoo - could be some merit to the pathworking and symbology there)

so, that is what I've come up with...  To give you an idea of what my Work with Hela is, I will share with you a message received in a Seidhr session explaining to me why I can feel Her touch.  (Thank you Wodandis).

Hela spoke thru the Seeress (something that She rarely does from what I understand) only after "arguing" with Odhinn regarding Who should be the one to convey the message.

"Your path lies in working with the dead.  You are meant to be a guide for souls.   You have known this, but you fear to admit it to yourself, and you don't speak of it.   You fear it because you have felt death come close to you, to your family.   You fear loss, you fear pain.  Your fear makes you shrink away.  You must conquer your fear, for this is your path.   Look into the dark mirror before you, and see.  This is where all of the roads you have followed lead.  This is the training you have been approaching from so many ways.   It is where the Old Man is leading you, and why you feel My touch.  This is where His path and Mine overlap.  Your work is with the dead."

The reason I ask the following is because I am on a fan board for the show called Supernatural. And We have been debating for months what he necklace means. One mythology board point out to me that it is possibly African. I was wondering if you could take a look a let me know what you think. Enclosed is a picture of this necklace.

Networking opportunity? [18 Sep 2007|01:21pm]

angely78
[ mood | cheerful ]

Good afternoon,
My name is Angel, and I am a writer with a WIP that involves the world of the Aesir, the Vanir, and all the myths associated with them. It is a novel set in modern times, about a young woman who is chosen by forces she does not understand to stop a plot to hasten the coming of Ragnarok. That's putting it as simply as I possibly can... it's very complicated. While I do have beta readers who are assisting me, neither of them have any knowledge of Norse Mythology. I don't fault them for it, of course, but it makes for some very lonely work at times. I came to this community to get the POV of people who actually know about this fascinating world. I do hope to publish this manuscript some day in the near future, and so I'm taking my research very, very seriously.

While I'm at it, any really good books out there you could recommend? I just finished reading Padric Colum's "The Children of Odin", for the first time (no doubt I'll be rereading it about a million times before this is over). Any good translations of Snorri's Edda that I should own? Music that would provide inspiration? Or anyone interested in signing on as a beta reader purely for the mythological aspects?

Thank you in advance, and have a great day.

English to Runes [13 Sep 2007|01:45am]

simply_ran
[ mood | distressed ]

I know this may be very odd and I hope it's not off topic, but I need a little help with something.

A friend of mine sent me two passages about Hugin and Munin that she wanted translated into runes for a back piece she's working on. Why she asked me to do it is beyond me, but that's why I need a little help.

First thing, do their names end with -n or -nn? I ask because I've seen it spelled both ways.

And the second needs to be cut do to images..

Question Two )

Thank you for looking at my post, and I do apologize if this is off-topic or a waste of time.
