I need a flat/room/room in student housing for a year from September in Stockholm/Flemingsberg. Does anyone have an idea where I can look for one? (at the web-sites of student housing organisations such as sssb.se it says that to get one I need to stay in que for a year!) And may be there is someone who would like to share flat? Tack!

Scandi-overload! [27 Jun 2009|10:25pm]

aeolian_harp
My parents are visiting me in Copenhagen in a few weeks. They're going to be here for 11 days but we're traveling and will really only have five full days in the country of Denmark.

My mom has a crap-ton of ideas about what she wants to do, but the problem is, I think she's really stretching the timeline. For example, she wants to go to Ærø, but also Malmö and possibly Lund and/or Helsingborg. And then of course we have to do all the things in Copenhagen like Tivoli, Nyhavn, etc. I kind of think it would be neat to take them to Odense, but they haven't shown interest.

What would be a good strategy to go about all this? I'm not that keen on going to Ærø just because it takes 3 or 4 hours to get there and that would take an entire day, but is it worth it to go? What types of things can you do there? My family isn't really the outdoorsy type and there's no way we'd be able to bike long distances.

I'm not good at being a tourist and structuring my days...any help?

Master's Programmes in Sweden [19 Jun 2009|12:02am]

Is anyone here an American studying at a Swedish university? If so, are there still no tuition fees? I was perusing the Stockholm University website and that's what I've gathered from it...but it seems to good to be true. Surely there's got to be some sort of catch! If I've somehow misread this, please feel free to enlighten me. Is the acceptance rate for foreign students rather low?

Fun with Flybus (Reykjavik) [20 May 2009|02:54pm]

aeolian_harp
This is kind of random but has anyone here had a layover in Reykjavik and used the time to go into the city for a couple of hours?

I have an 8-hour layover at the airport and am wondering if I'd be too pressed for time to go into the city. I have been there before and it's my favorite city in the world and just walking up and down Laugavegur would be amazing.

Uppsala University and Gothenburg University!, Advice needed on choosing between them. [28 Apr 2009|10:42am]

b_r_u_n_h_i_lde
Hi everybody!

I seriously need a piece of advice! Yesterday evening I've got a mail from The School of Business, Economics, and Law, University of Gothenburg (not an e-mail, a post mail!) They manage admissions outside of studera system (due to the incompatibility of deadlines). I have been admitted to the M.Sc. in Industrial Management. At the same time I have SG=DA & MR=999 for Uppsala Uni, MSc in Economics, as far as I understand this means very high chance of being admitted. I know that in general Uppsala is much more prestigious than Gothenburg, but The School of Business, Economics, and Law is quite separate and also very good. Not being very familiar with the situation of Swedish university rankings, I would like to have some suggestions on the matter. Thanks for advance for any help!

Public holidays in Finland? [21 Apr 2009|10:26am]

nrwgian_wouldbe
I was planning on going to Helsinki between June 15 and 20 or 21st, so I checked to make sure that no public holidays fell on any of those days. But I found that the 19th and 20th are "de facto public holidays" because of Midsummer. Are the stores going to be closed due to Midsummer?!?

In the spring of 2010, I'm going to be studying at the University of Oslo as part of the USAC here in the U.S. I expect that orientation is going to give me a lot of information about getting around and that sort of thing, but I was wondering if anyone here might have some pointers/helpful comments to share with me about what to expect?

I'm quite excited! :)

The Library of Congress has put up a wonderful set of photocrom prints from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, taken between 1890 and 1910.

Enjoy!

Day trips: Sweden [06 Dec 2008|02:01pm]

aeolian_harp
I'm in Copenhagen and considering doing a day trip to somewhere in Sweden because I haven't seen that much of the country. I was thinking of doing Gothenburg but I'm up for other suggestions. I have been to Malmö and Stockholm, and that's it. I can't find that much information on things to do in Gothenburg, and I don't want to do really really touristy things. Is it easy to get around the whole city by just walking?

Stockholm in February [28 Nov 2008|08:27pm]

eee_eph
So, what's Stockholm like in February? My mum and I are planning a long weekend in Stockholm and the only time I can practically do it is either in mid-February or at Easter (i.e. April). Is it unbearably cold in February? I've heard the best season to visit Stockholm is in the winter.

Ny Tid - subscribing to a Nordic magazine outside Norden [16 Nov 2008|03:29pm]

eee_eph
Hello! I am thinking of subscribing to a Swedish-language magazine in order to improve my Swedish. I like a variety of reading material. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of subscribing to Ny Tid. I'm looking at this page and, as far as I can see, it just says an additional postage charge applies for subscriptions outside Finland and Sweden, but it doesn't actually indicate how much this would be, and I'm reluctant to fill out the form with my address in case it automatically signs me up and I'll be sent a huge bill. Additionally, it says students can get a 33% discount - I'm a student, do you think that applies to me even though I don't live in Finland or Sweden? I live in the UK, by the way. Thanks in advance for any help!

If you could relate this woman to a specific Scandinavian country, where would you think she is from based on her physical features? Finland, Denmark, Norway, or Sweden? And why?

Thanks!

Iceland : questions about Sólheimar, icons and music [07 Nov 2008|11:02am]

Sæl!

I've been studying Icelandic for about a month, and I'm (hopefully) going to go there for 9 months in January (in the small community of Sólheimar).
I've got three questions
1) Anyone here know of Sólheimar ? I know the basics, but if by any chance someone here can tell me more about it, it'd be nice (I know it's a long shot, but hey)
2) I'm looking for Iceland-related lj-icon, anyone could point some to me ? (I can't leave without some appropriate icons, can I ?)
3) Anywhere on line where I can find some folk or traditional songs ?

That's it, thank you :)

Denmark in November [30 Sep 2008|02:34pm]

Which region could you recommend for a trip to Denmark in November?

Main objective is to get a nice rest, some reading, DVDs, sauna, jacuzzi tub ... but of course we would also like to have a scenic surrounding for walking and some neat cities within a radius of approx 50 km ... Any suggestions?

Buying books [09 Sep 2008|10:38pm]

schnee
[ mood | hopeful ]

Hey everyone!

I'm just wondering if anyone can help me out - I'm looking for an Icelandic book (namely, Stálnótt by Sjón), but I can't find it anywhere. I'm not even sure it's even still in print, admittedly; but the usual sources for used books (like AbeBooks etc.) haven't yielded anything, either.

I have a feeling that if I want to find it, I'll have to look at sites that are specific to Iceland (or maybe to the Nordic countries, at least) - used book sites, if such a thing exists, or maybe auction sites.

Does anyone have any pointers for me there? Or any other ideas where I could look for the book? :) Thanks a bunch in advance. :)

Working in Sweden [20 Aug 2008|01:16pm]

northropfrye
Hello, I was hoping someone here would be able to help me with this...
I'm thinking about doing a masters degree in either Sweden next fall (a year from now) and I know that if I have a student visa I can work in Sweden part-time.  However, my wife will not be studying and from all the information I've seen I haven't been able to find any way for her to legally work in Sweden as a Canadian. (You can get a work visa, but you have to prove you're more capable than anyone in Sweden and anyone in the EU - so very unlikely).
Do any of you have any ideas about how to legally work in Sweden as a non-EU person?  So far, I've come up with nothing that seems plausible.

Ports in Scandinavia? [19 Aug 2008|01:31pm]

alwaysmoi
Hey guys! My mother and I are planning a cruise for northern europe next summer and being a compulsive planner, I'm already reading up on the cities we'll be visiting---Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, and Oslo. My question to you is this: how far away are the main sights from the cruise ship docking area? I'm the sort of person who would rather explore things on my own, but my mom is worried that we'll end up getting lost/bumbling around/etc if we don't go on a cruise designated excursion.

Annnd while I'm asking questions, what's the best thing to see in Stockholm if you only have an afternoon? I've been looking through my guide book and there are too many cool things to choose...

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I've never been anywhere in Scandinavia and I'm pretty excited :)
