First ticklings of the new year...
I've got a quiet moment here at work, so Your Humble Moderator would like to remind you that nonficwrimo is definitely on for 2007. I thought you might want a little heads-up to get you thinking about possible topics and formats for next February. I'm going to try again what I didn't manage to do last year: One memory/story from my life each day. If I meet the word count goal, great, but my primary target is daily writing. How about you? What are you going to aim for? Feel free to use this space for planning purposes as well as the actual event. Best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!* * Unless, of course, you don't live in the US...in which case: Happy Thursday! | | Tuesday, March 7th, 2006 | 10:21 am [misquoted]

Skipping March
It's March 7th and while I've written some (though not posted it), I haven't written regularly. I'll be out of town and not writing for at least 8 days out of March, so all things considered, I'm going to skip March. I'll write as much as I can (in my personal LJ mostly), but I doubt I'll be able to be consistant. If we do this for April, I'm in. Good luck, all! Keep writing! | | Wednesday, March 1st, 2006 | 11:29 am [lifecollage]

Marching ever onward... [Okay, I couldn't resist the pun. Sorry, sorta.]Well, it's March 1st, folks. I realize that I've been far more laissez faire as moderator than even I'd expected to be, being lame with reminders and encouragements. That said, congrats to misquoted, woofiegrrl, keyne, and willfeedforwork for their successes in NonFicWriMo February! Yaaaayyyyyyyy! I've seen some interest in continuing NonFicWriMo into March, for all of us who didn't quite meet a goal of any kind in February and some who did. I'm certainly in, and I'd like to put it out to the community: What would y'all think of making this a monthly event, where folks can participate or not in months of their choosing? The monthly goals remain the same -- 25K words total, writing every day, or both -- but you can switch themes or goal styles as suits your interests. I'll keep this community going for continuous feedback and encouragement, and as a place for folks to post their work if they'd like to share. Who's with me?!?! March nonficwrimo?
So, are we continuing? If so, and I assume we are, I'm thinking about continuing what I've been doing, writing sort of stream-of-consciousness thoughts about each quote in the book It's Not Easy Being Green, and other things to consider by Jim Henson, the Muppets, and Friends. NonFicWriMo #21: Actors Who Sing
When you're a famous actor, you can get away with a lot of things. Vince Vaughn was involved in a fight, but charges were dropped; Hugh Grant received probation and a fine for a lewd conduct charge; Matthew McConaughey was arrested on drug charges, but those were dropped and he was fined $50 for disturbing the peace. But there's one thing actors get away with that may or may not be a good thing: actors who sing. Jennifer Lopez and Jack Black are established as both singers and actors, but some of the actors who cross over into singing do it just because they can. ( Continue reading ) | 12:29 pm [shadesong]

My intentions were great... unfortunately, my body wasn't up to the task! I was laid low by tendonitis early in February. And it has not improved. So I've been forbidden to type. Agh. I didn't want the month to go by without *any* progress, though, so I did a voice post. Again, this is part of my Vegas autobiography; follow the bouncing tags if you want to read more! And I'll make another month *my* NonFicWriMo. When my wrist heals. It'll be *so* nice to not be in constant debilitating pain, oh yes. Last day of Kermit When I hear the art of puppetry discussed, I often feel frustrated in that it's one of those pure things that somehow becomes much less interesting when it is overdiscussed or analyzed. I feel it does what it does and even is a bit weakened if you know what it is doing. At its best, it is talking to a deeper part of you, and if you know that it's doing that, or you become aware of it, you lessen the ability to go straight in. Fairy tales certainly are in this category, as is a lot of fantasy -- maybe everything is.~Jim ( Last day of Kermit ) | 8:39 pm [misquoted]

Three more days of Kermit
I'm behind one day, because I didn't write on Saturday. Tonight I'll write two separate pieces. As I try to zero in on what's important for the Muppets, I think it's a sense of innocence, naivete -- you know, the experience of a simple person meeting life. Even the most worldly of our characters is innocent. Our villains are innocent, really. And it's that innocence that I think is the connection to the audience.~Jim ( Three more days of Kermit ) | 2:46 pm [woofiegrrl]

NonFicWriMo #20: Crystal Pepsi
One of the great commercial flops of the early 1990's was Crystal Pepsi. Only seven years after the failure of Coca-Cola's "New Coke" formulation, PepsiCo got the idea to market a cola drink with no coloring. The product was original: existing clear sodas were usually lemon-lime, like Sprite and 7-Up, rather than cola-flavored. But despite an aggressive marketing campaign, Crystal Pepsi went flat as quickly as - well, soda. ( Continue reading ) | | Saturday, February 25th, 2006 | 10:28 am [misquoted]

More Kermit. I see Jim's life as a very Zen kind of thing. I never heard him say rude or bad things about other people. He
lived, I think, by example. To show other people how to be by who you are.

NonFicWriMo #19: Sang Lan
Throughout the second half of the 20th century, eastern European countries dominated gymnastics at the international level. The Soviet Union was renowned for its training centers that consistently turned out prize-winning gymnasts, but when the government dissolved in the early 1990s another Communist country was given the opportunity to showcase its gymnasts. Chinese gymnasts such as Yang Bo, Liu Xuan, and Mo Huilan paved the way for younger gymnasts to achieve great recognition on the international stage. One such young gymnast was Sang Lan, but her dream was shattered. ( Continue reading ) | | Tuesday, February 21st, 2006 | 8:40 pm [misquoted]

Caught up! Jim inspired people to be better than they thought they could be. To be more creative, more daring, more outrageous, and ultimately more successful. And he did it all without raising his voice.~ Bernie Brillstein ( *sigh* ) | 4:42 pm [lifecollage]

A decent increase
Still working on the same longer piece: "A Matter of Semantics?" Good progress today, but I'm almost sure not to make the goal for February. However, I plan on continuing through March, and if anyone would like to join me, feel free! Current Mood: hopeful | | Monday, February 20th, 2006 | 10:36 pm [lifecollage]

I have set a very bad example
It's always the way: you set out to do a noble thing, get sidetracked, and watch as others take your ball and run far further with it than you could have hoped for yourself. While I'm ecstatic that this community has served many of you well, I've been more than a little frustrated with my own lack of movement. I remedied that today. Today's count, courtesy of MS Word: 838I'll keep working on it tomorrow. I hope to have at least this piece done by the end of the month, and the next major work started. We'll see. Thank you, all, for being a part of this. I'm glad for anything I've been able to accomplish with this community. Current Mood: content | 7:57 pm [misquoted]

We always used to kid Jim that after telling everybody "simple is good," he would turn around and try to produce the most complicated work in the world and just about wipe out all of us -- him most of all -- in the process.~Jerry Juhl ( See? More Kermit Over the years, television has produced a few individuals blessed with the ability to touch our hearts, our minds, and our lives with their vision. It's not so much that these special people march to a different drummer, but that they carry their own orchestras around with them in their heads. And when we allow them to play their tunes, the sound reverberates for generation. They make us think and they make us laugh.~Candice Bergen ( More. ) | 2:23 pm [misquoted]

update
I wrote about RandyCon (gaming convention) in my personal LJ, so I'm still behind by three writings. I'll catch up this weekend. Although I'm behind due to the retreat, I am really enjoying this. |
