For the Character-Oriented
non-plot
Name:non_plot
About:Welcome to Non-Plot, a community for writers of original fiction to develop their characters in a stress-free setting. (Not a community for NC-17 rated fiction -- at least, not only. Sorry!)

Sister comm for the musically-oriented at [info]lyric_plot.

What We Do
1. Write original fiction. This may sound obvious, but as this is an original fiction community, we don't do fandoms here. Sorry, Buffy fans.
2. Open our arms to any genre. Don't worry about being bashed here -- you can write fantasy, horror, romance of any shape or form.
3. Focus on character development. This community is NOT about writing your novel, although we encourage that: more important than plot are your characters. Even if you do write a novel, you won't be able to put in EVERY interesting moment your character has unless they all have relevance to the plot. We're about getting those moments out on paper -- keeping your characters active, even when their story isn't.
4. Provide helpful commentary and critique. None of the ffnet "This story is kewl plz write more" meaningless response: we strive for intelligent and helpful replies. Be warned that this may include offering advice for structure and grammar. Our goal is to help our members improve. Because we care!

How We Do It
1. We post our fiction here. Short stories, drabbles, experimental pieces -- anything you want feedback on. If it's original, whether random or based on an extensive story, we want to read it.
2. Every week, the group maintainer will post a challenge. The challenge is optional; you are not obligated to do it. The challenge will encourage you to write either within a time limit or within a word limit, but there are no penalties for going over; the challenge is only to give you ideas if you're feeling uncreative.
3. Off-topic posts are not allowed. Do not post an entire entry telling us what your weather is like -- make certain that your post in some way relates to the writing of original fiction. Advertisements are allowed be moderator permission only: please leave your request as a comment in the most recent challenge post!
4.Moderators reserve the right to turn down any request to use the community for advertising. Advertising other communities if you haven't recently contributed to [info]non_plot will likely be turned down. We're more likely to be helpful to active members: please don't bother joining and lurking only to use us as advertising space. If you have nothing to post for the challenge, feel free to post other work, or at least comment!
5. We comment on other people's work. This is a critical part of our community; we want to help other people improve and tell them how we feel about their characters, and we want to do it in a polite and friendly manner. We are not about flaming. The standard recommendation is that you review two drabbles (NOT those of your friends, if at all possible!) for every one piece that you post.
6. You may definitely suggest challenges if there is anything in particular you would like to do. Go wild!
7. Don't post an introduction post. In the notes of your first written piece you should include a note of greeting. Introduce yourself, your favorite genre, etc.

Format
Original Story format
Your subject line must follow this example --
#5 -- G, "Idylls of an Aikido Afternoon"

Your header must follow this example --
Title: Idylls of an Aikido Afternoon
Author: [info]kay_willow
Content: Chicago second-gen; Sasha and Melinda
Rating: G
Challenge: #5, family discussion challenge, time limit goal (written in about 40 min)
Notes: I am just waiting for the chance to actually write this idea; I love their relationship...

All stories MUST go behind LJ-cut tags, or they will be DELETED.

To be absolutely clear on that, here it is again:
# of challenge -- rating, "title"

Your header must follow this example:
Title: the title of your piece
Author: lj user="yourusername"
Subject: a name for your storyline/universe; characters involved (no more than three, pick the most important ones if there's more!)
Rating: how naughty your piece is; the average is PG
Challenge: # of challenge, name of challenge challenge, whatever goal you did, if any
Notes: any author notes you may want to share with us, or a summary of your piece if you're so inclined

IMPORTANT -- As you see above, the subject line is NOT for a summary of your piece, nor is it for a teaser. You can put the teaser or summary in your cut-text or notes. The subject line is for the title you want all drabbles that take place in that storyline to be archived under (it doesn't matter what, you can change it at any time) and the name of the characters involved. The Memories are there for YOUR benefit, so that YOU will have a story archive that you can go through. If you don't know what to use, browse the Memories and see what other people have done.

If you don't have a name for your universe, just use "original", and post the names of the characters.

Following this format will make it IMMENSELY helpful for when I put your stories in the Memories, which will hopefully be updated frequently. Memories will be stored by author, "universe", and characters involved.

If there are any questions on this community or how to do anything for this community, please direct the questions to [info]kay_willow -- other mods include [info]alicia250, [info]sakusha, and [info]phinnia.
