Boston? Have 2 bedroom apt, need roomie for share, Jan 1
Know anyone looking for housing in Boston? Here is my CL ad, feel free to pass on. 43 year old somewhat-butch looking for housemate in my Somerville 2 bedroom, for Jan 1. the apt: Sunny, hardwood floors, and recently renovated. Granite countertop, gas stove, and back deck. Rent is $550 per month, plus around $100 in utilities. Security deposit, but no last month's. Landlord is attentive and ethical, but not nosey. Plenty of street parking, no permits. Near Broadway, and therefore MBTA. Near park. http://www.redpm.com/homes/walnut/jay.htm#me: 43 queer, superfat, and an all around great person with an infectious laugh. I have a chill cat who hates other animals but LOVES people. Seeking someone who is also quiet, resonsible, respectful, and a good communicator. Who is also a non-smoker, non-heavy drug or alcohol user. I like things neat so that I can jump right into projects - whether it is making dinner, painting, or doing homework. I will be driving to the Back Bay almost every weekday, and am open to negotiating rides. I enjoy chilling with roomie and movie at night, or talking over coffee in the morning. Excited to hear from you! Current Mood: awake | 1:13 pm [mermeydele]

The Fat Studies Reader - woo-hoo!
Hi everyone, I'm not sure if it's been circulated around here lately, but tomorrow is the official release date of The Fat Studies Reader, a new semi-academic anthology that discusses many, many aspects of fat life and culture, all from a fat-positive viewpoint. It's edited by the brilliant Sandra Solvay and Esther Rothblum and has an intro by Marilyn Wann. There are about 40 chapters in it, with more than 50 authors, and they deal with politics, law, health, visual, literary, and performance arts, identity, clothing, and more. I have yet to see it in person, but my copy should be coming any day now. Susan Stinson has reviewed parts of it here. I encourage anyone interested to ask their school and public libraries to buy a copy so you can borrow it from them! Or buy it for yourself! | | Thursday, October 15th, 2009 | 3:57 pm [chelseyl]

CFP: Fat Studies Area at the Popular Culure Association
2010 PCA/ACA Conference Fat Studies Area Call for Papers Fat Studies is becoming an interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary field of study that confronts and critiques cultural constraints against notions of “fatness” and “the fat body”; explores fat bodies as they live in, are shaped by, and remake the world; and creates paradigms for the development of fat acceptance or celebration within mass culture. Fat Studies uses body size as the starting part for a wide-ranging theorization and explication of how societies and cultures, past and present, have conceptualized all bodies and the political/cultural meanings ascribed to every body. Fat Studies reminds us that all bodies are inscribed with the fears and hopes of the particular culture they reside in, and these emotions often are mislabeled as objective “facts” of health and biology. More importantly, perhaps, Fat Studies insists on the recognition that fat identity can be as fundamental and world-shaping as other identity constructs analyzed within the academy and represented in media. Proposals in the area of Fat Studies are being accepted for the 2010 PCA /ACA (Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association) National Conference in St. Louis, MO (March 31 through April 3, 2010 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel St. Louis). We welcome papers and performances from academics, researchers, intellectuals, activists, and artists, in any field of study, and at any stage in their career. Topics may include but are not limited to: · representations of fat people in literature, film, music, nonfiction, and the visual arts · cross-cultural or global constructions of fatness and fat bodies · cultural, historical, or philosophical meanings of fat and fat bodies · portrayals of fat individuals and groups in news, media, magazines · fatness as a social or political identity · fat acceptance, activism, and/or pride movements and tactics · approaches to fat and body image in philosophy, psychology, religion, sociology · fat children in literature, media, and/or pedagogy · fat as it intersects with race, ethnicity, class, religion, ability, gender, and/or sexuality · history and/or critique of diet books and scams · functions of fatphobia or fat oppression in economic and political systems By December 1, 2009, please send an abstract of 100 - 250 words or a completed paper to Fat Studies Area Co-Chairs Julia McCrossin ( jmccross@gwmail.gwu.edu) and Lesleigh Owen ( goddess_les@yahoo.com). Please include your complete contact information and a CV and/or 50 word bio, along with anticipated A/V needs. All submissions are welcome, but please use the information above to ensure your paper fits within the academic and political scopes of Fat Studies. Please also be mindful that Fat Studies is a political project and not merely an umbrella term for all discussions of larger bodies. Also, we encourage submitters to rethink using words like “obesity” and “overweight” in their presentations unless they are used ironically, within quotes, or accompanied by a political analysis. Presenters must become members of the Popular Culture Association. Find more information on the conference and organization at http://pcaaca.org/conference/national.php. | | Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 | 4:04 pm [bounce_n_jiggle]

The Fat of the Land: A Queer Chub Harvest Festival - 3 Oct 2009, London, UK
Hi folks, It would be AMAZING to see you at this, which a bunch of us are organising in the UK with the support of NOLOSE. I've cut and pasted our press release to give you more of an idea of what it's about. Charlotte xx PRESS RELEASE: for immediate circulation Coming Soon! The Fat of the Land: A Queer Chub Harvest Festival London's fat queers and their pals are coming together to challenge the greed of the diet industry and body fascism within the gay community by producing a food festival that celebrates body diversity. The Fat of the Land: A Queer Chub Harvest Festival is a DIY food fest, synthesizing interest in slow food, recession-busting, sustainable food, 'make-and-do' and craft culture with a fat queer sensibility. It is intended as a secular fat queerifying of a traditional harvest gathering, and the organizers positively welcome multicultural interpretations of the theme. The Fat of the Land is child friendly and open to people of all sizes and sexualities. It will feature: • Activities: crafting, traditional games, competitions for best jam, best chutney, best cake, best produce, best vegetable monster and more • Stalls, refreshments, and information about Health At Every Size • Art: Allyson Mitchell's grotto will be open for visits • Evening Performance: including a group rendition of The Fat Queer Harvest Hymn, written especially for the event, and special surprise act by Chopin Gard Visitors are encouraged to bring along a tin of unwanted food to be donated to a prominent diet guru – the respondent will be chosen on the day. Co-organiser and fat queer activist Charlotte Cooper explains: "We see The Fat of the Land as a celebration of the abundance of harvest time and our connection to the rhythms of nature and creativity, albeit executed in our own idiosyncratic, outsider, warped, prankish, punk, 21st century, Wicker Man style. "It is a defiant celebration of abundance and plenty amidst a 'healthy living' agenda in the UK that is often reductionist, fatphobic and mean, and is thus health-enhancing for people of all sizes." Details The Fat of the Land: A Queer Chub Harvest Festival Saturday 3 October 2009 St Anne's, 55 Dean Street, Soho, London. This is an accessible venue. £5/£2.50 concessions. 2-5pm stalls and activities 5-6pm competition judging 6-8pm performances Notes for editors 3 October 2009 is the weekend of this year's Harvest Moon. We are seeking volunteers. The Fat of The Land is being principally organised by Charlotte Cooper, and Naz Jamal and Jason Elvis Barker of The Queer Institute. It has been made possible by a Small Projects Across the Land loan by NOLOSE, the US organisation for fat dykes and their allies. The Fat of the Land seeks to capitalise on the success of the Chubsters event at the 2009 London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, which witnessed a fierce outpouring of fat-queer activism in the UK and a hunger expressed by many of the participants for more events of such a nature. NOLOSE Announces Funding for Fat Events Across the Land! NOLOSE Announces Funding for Fat Events Across the Land! NOLOSE is thrilled to announce the recipients of the Small Projects Across the Land grants which support events promoting fat visibility, fat culture and fat fabulousness. We were overwhelmed by the response to our call for proposals and choosing only five amongst the applicants was challenging. Below is a brief description of each the funded projects that were awarded funding. $600 awarded to Fat Kid Flea Market, a fatshion flea market and performance with recycled and locally designed clothes in sizes 14+ and fat positive performances in Austin, Texas. $1,000 awarded to The Fat of the Land: A Queer Chub Harvest Festival, a London UK based Harvest Festival incorporating fat positive performance and information with slow food movement, traditional harvest time rituals, food and a general celebration of abundance. $700 awarded to a one day conference in New York, NY entitled Fat and Queer and focused on Social, Political, Health, Art, Media, Financial and Academic interests (just to name a few) of self identified Fat, Queer folks and their allies. $700 awarded to a one day conference in Boston, MA called Fat and Queer Movement: Past, Present, Future, that will focus on the history and complexity of fat and queer movements. $1,000 awarded to Flabulous!, an evening of drag, cabaret, and burlesque featuring a variety of queer performers of size and their allies in San Francisco, CA. The show will feature pieces that celebrate queer bodies in all of their sizes as well as pieces that directly address body fascism and the lived experiences of people of size. Check the NOLOSE website ( www.nolose.org/spal) soon for more information and further details. NOLOSE* is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to ending the oppression of fat people and creating vibrant fat queer culture. In the activist and empowerment work that we do, we envision a world: - that is accessible to fat people and reflective of us.
- that is without fat discrimination, hatred or prejudice.
- where fat people are empowered to create positive change in ourselves and in our communities.
- where beauty, morality, health, humor and fashion are divorced from size and shape and all bodies are celebrated.
- where fighting fat phobia is seen as integrally linked to other social justice issues such as the women's movement, anti-racist and anti-imperialist struggles of people of color at home and around the world, queer and transgender movements, class struggle, disability rights movements and more.
- where all people have a right to basic human rights as well as joy, sensuality and self-determination.
- and where the diet industry closes up shop as the world sees their products for the oppressive and ineffective scams they are.

Flickering Light Film Series Call for Submissions: Weighty Proposition Flickering Light Film Series Call for Submissions Weighty Proposition: Films about Fatness, Bodies and Food Filmmakers and Video Artists are invited to submit films of any length to be screened as part of “Weighty Proposition: Films about Fatness, Bodies and Food.” What is it about a fat body that is scary, beautiful, bold, invisible, revolutionary, obscene? Why do our bodies become sites for debate, confusion, angst and exaltation? How do we come to our individual and cultural understanding of that universal question: Do you eat to live, or live to eat? We are looking for films that document fat positive movement building, that challenge our conceptions of fatness, that create new paradigms for beauty, that consider relationships between size, race, class and gender, that explore food and consumption, and that (most of all) express something fresh and new about fatness, bodies, and food. Films will be juried by the film series coordinator, Sara Zia Ebrahimi, and filmmaker Naima Lowe. Films not selected for the screening may be considered for future screenings throughout the year.
