Brief, Belated Torchwood Reaction
( Spoilers for all of Children of Earth )
7/11/09 10:06 pm
a wee update
I installed a wireless router in my apartment that only works when the cord is attached to my laptop.
This, essentially, is the story of my life.
But on the plus side, I still can't check email in bed. This is a good thing I think.
None of the six adorable kittens I took to the adoption event got adopted today. And I am completely worn out by the day. My friend was kind enough to say "you're cursed!" Next week - I'll have better luck next week.
Rod Stewart is on Graham Norton tonight (BBC-A) and he could hardly sing, his face is so botoxed. I'm trying to resist a pre-40th birthday botox, but I'm so tempted. And then I see how paralyzed over-botoxed celebs look and it makes me want to sag and pinch naturally. Also, he looks nothing like the original Rod Stewart - freaky.
Random post is random. I'll have to do my own *original thoughts* post on Torchwood, but not tonight, man, not tonight!
Tomorrow I am going to Brooklyn for a "first-time" experience with a close friend (we're not having sex). I may post on that later. *is mysterious*
7/11/09 09:59 pm
I keep thinking it's Sunday. I ONLY WISH! New TRUE BLOOD tomorrow! W00t!
Happy birthday to the awesome fickledame! I hope you have fabulous day, honey!

Come on. What the fuck, people?

Another Vampire Diaries promo:
You know, between Twitlight and this, I've started to wonder: Why do these vampire guys bother going to high school? I mean... it's frickin' creepy, is what it is. I prefer they lurk. Of course, it's only these magically daytime-safe vampires who CAN go to school, but WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO? It's not like there are truant officers scouring towns anymore. Especially not for guys who are clearly at least in their 20's. The only think I can think of is that they want to stalk high school girls.
Geeze, at least Buffy was the Slayer -- she could take care of herself. I don't know... I think this show might end up being too Twilight Creepy for me. We'll see, I guess.
~
I'm curious if anyone has invites to An Archive of Our Own? I've been wanting to try it for a while now, and I would love to have someplace to post all of my fic besides LJ and my site. And of course, my site's a big mess, so.... Eh.
Anyway, if you're involved and have an invite, I would love one.
~
Mmmm. I just had the most delicious Caesar salad. I am appropriately ashamed at the bad environmental karma I collected, because not only wasn't it local produce, it was a DOLE BAGGED SALAD. They were on sale, and I'm really, really broke, ya'll. I was literally dying for some cool, fresh veggies. We almost never have them in our house anymore, as we're waiting for our own garden to be ready for harvest. I was read about, I think it was in New Jersey? That there's a program where people with Food Stamps can spend them on fresh food in the farmers' markets. Man, I would love to do that. Of course, I share a house owned by my parents, and they refuse to disclose their finances, so I can't even GET food stamps. How's that for a Catch-22? *sigh*
ANYWAY, wah wah I'm poor. YUMMY SALAD. I put jalapenos on it, chopped up the one tomato and 1/2 red pepper we had in the house. The salad kit came with "fresh" parmesan that you crumble up, a delicious creamy caesar dressing, and yummy croutons. IT WAS THE BEST SALAD EVER.
Okay, maybe in a really long time, then. Remember the days when I used to go to the steak house salad bar and have Fat Salads for lunch for $5/shot? It was like 3 pounds of Romaine lettuce, baby carrots, pepperoni, shredded cheese, chunky blue cheese dressing, balsamic vinegar, sauteed mushrooms and fresh bread croutons. Mmmm. So yummy and slimy and gross.
Man, I'm hungry for more salad.
~
Okay, there's just no way to be sad or grumpy after you see and hear this. Borrowed from my friend lizardjee, whose son is totally obsessed with it. I don't blame him, actually. :
~
If you haven't pet my baby dragon yet, please do. She's only got 3 days to grow up before she DIES. Gods, that's horrible! What kind of sadistic game is this? *cries*

Writer's Block: Lights Out
Heh. I'm afraid I'm going to have to plead the Fifth on that one. *G* When I was in my 20's, I almost never used electric lights -- I preferred candle light. Good Goddess, I was a walking fire hazard. Of course, I was... er... let's say herbally enhanced most of the time back then, so electric light was really too much for my eyes. Plus -- broke! These days I still don't mind a good blackout every now and again. The only thing about it that bugs me is that I have a crap battery on my laptop, so I can't use my computer. Plus, the high speed internet router is electric, so I can't use the internet either. So I have to do stuff like READ and WRITE ON PAPER, which is just weird. ;)

Cool Clean Energy Stickers!
Want a free sticker to support clean energy? It's designed by Shepard Fairey, the acclaimed artist who created the iconic Obama 'HOPE' poster. And MoveOn's giving them away totally free--even the shipping's free.
I just got mine. Click this link to get your free sticker:

I still have my Obama one hanging up on the fridge... even though I'm still annoyed with him, I think he's doing the best job that he possibly can with the mess he's wading through.
And speaking of green stuff, I finally got my Klean Kanteen today! I've been using the same PVC plastic bottle for three years now and probably poisoning myself to death, but I've been trying to save up for the Real Deal. Picked it up in VT for a really good price. If you're interested in knowing more, check out Kleankanteen.com!

Wow! denny_dc turned me on to this -- it's Coco Sumner, Sting's daughter.
Her voice is AMAZING! I'm so impressed.
~
And I've spent the rest of the day working on my Pam/Jessica fic and watching The Dresden Files, which I've never seen before. I don't know, I'm kind of meh about it. If I consider it it's own entity/show, it's just fine, but when compared to the books -- everybody sing, you know the words: The Books Are Better.
Mood, if not squee: blank
7/10/09 04:20 pm
MAN, I never ever want to get in a car again. HAAATE. Like twelve hours in a STUFFED TO THE BRIM minivan, all night long, trying to get comfy enough to snooze? Not so much fun, turns out. And we let the cat roam around, which was fine - he slept a lot on me/by my side and it was cute - until he somehow managed to get under the middle seat with like, no way out. He stayed under there for um, eight hours.
Anyhoo, we're at a very nice hotel in Albuquerque. It is so freakin hot I wish to hurt everyone. Mingo is hiding under my bed. Benton is stoic as always. The room is so nice I want to stay here instead of continuing on. :P
ALSO! FREE WIRELESS. :D We're about to go for dinner, so.. whatever. Then I will be having no life and checking my flist. Mmm. :P
Ugh, and last night before we left, saying goodbye to my brother and his family.. that sucked. Ruth kept saying she was going to cry, then she kept asking everyone ELSE if they were gonna cry. Heh. We took pictures and stuff. Angelina cried once they were in the car getting ready to leave, as she's the only one old enough to really get what's going on.
I'm going to miss them so much. :( They need to hurry and move, too.
But yeah, I did fine hugging everyone goodbye.. until I got to my brother. So yeah. There's that.
Lastly, oh, automatic transcription of voice posts. MANGO HEIGHT SHOES? XD Mango Hi Chews, thank you very much, LJ.
7/10/09 01:36 pm
On balance the good outweighs the bad...
Things which I have found annoying today:
1) I've called my eye doctor's office twice this week and left messages to get an incorrect billing situation cleared up and still have not received a call back. Why do businesses do this? 2) I'm not particularly happy with last night's SYTYCD results. I don't mind the girl's decision because there was a certain logic, but for the men I'm upset that now 7 of the top 10 are contemporary dancers. For a show which constantly touts itself as being revolutionary in it's acceptance of all dance forms it sure is narrow-minded in who they choose to get to the top 20 and keep in the top 10. 3) My shoes today have started pinching the pinky toe on my right foot. They've never done this before. 4) Due to budget cuts we now have to take our own recycling bins and trash bins down to the big giant bin outside the back door. You would think we were preparing for D-Day with how many discussions have been had relating to this change. Should we each take our own bins out to the giant bin outside? Should we have a not-so-giant bin in the breakroom? Who would be responsible for taking not-so-giant bin out to the giant bin? Do we keep bin liners at our own desks or in stuffed-to-the-gills closet? Etc... Just make up your freaking minds already! 5) I'm bored to tears with absolutely everything on my IPod, with the exception of This American Life and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me.
Things which I have found nice or amusing today:
1) It's Friday. 2) It's new episodes of Eureka, day! 3) A friend recommended I look at GAP Adventures for possible next-summer travel plans as she had a couple of great experiences with them. At any rate, I took a peek and they have a trip package which is traveling by yacht through the Greek Islands. Doesn't that sound marvelous? Sailing from island to island, baking in the sun between rambles through ancient history? I love dreaming about trip possibilities... 4) Tomorrow I have two men coming to trim back all the nasty overgrown ivy around my home (my allergies will NOT let me deal with it.) 5) I have another couple of men coming by tomorrow to finally (frinkin' finally) get the broken treadmill out of my spare bedroom and take it to the recycle center. Ahhhhh, to have the ability to actually utilize that room again! Two years of tripping over a giant, broken treadmill is far too long, IMHO. 6) While talking to Bubby on the phone yesterday, he kept having to interrupt to tell BabyNiece to go back to bed. Apparently, she has grown tall enough to now open her bedroom door and will do so whenever she doesn't feel like going to bed on-time. I don't know why I find his complete and utter exasperation last night so amusing. But I totally do. (Memories of Mom dealing with the same thing when he was a kid may have something to do with my amusement...)
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

This is partly to cheer up lallybroch, who I wish was hurting less, and mostly for me. This week has been one crappy thing after another, and today someone upped and spoiled me for Torchwood which I think is the perfect cap. Everything sucks. So, there's this.

Quick update before I hit the road
*No, this isn't the start of the Roadtrip *Yes, this is me going to Shore Leave with media_junkie *Yes, I am ready to start the panic packing phase of the Roadtrip
In other news:
*I baked a cake in my electric frying pan -- since it will be my primary cooking device during the roadtrip, I am well pleased with the experiment - will post pictures sometime this weekend
* I have seen the first 4 parts of Torchwood's Children of Earth. To say more than that I must see part 5 would be spoilers. Although, reactions to episode specific content aside, this is orders of magnitude above better quality than anything we've seen from Torchwood before.
*Based on the fighting style of my backyard ground hogs, it is now easy to tell that at least one of them is male. There may be pictures of that too ;-P Unfortunately the screens were closed and I have a hard time focusing through them.
*Ack! I've got to leave and I'm still not packed!!!

Nearly Pointless Post
I'm sensing something BIG happened in Part 4 of Children of Earth. I'm tempted to click on cut tags, but am trying to remain strong. It's not like I really care, but my curiosity kills most of the time. I had hoped to watch last night, but there was IMing, then Burn Notice (And, for the record, you DO NOT have to go to the state capital to get copies of incorporation documents. They can be FedEx'd to you overnight. Apparently, the writers are too busy coming up with ways to break into a building to do simple fact checking.), and then I fell asleep at 10:00. The late nights this week caught up to me. On the plus side, I can watch Parts 4 and 5 back-to-back tonight.

Happy July-birthdays-so-far to tiyanath, ezagaaikwe, adelynne, diachrony, hellopoe, hermionesviolin, and on-time today, sandy_s! And let's wish a happy tomorrow birthday to dettiot for good measure, since the chances of me posting tomorrow are slim-to-bupkiss.
Whew! I wish I could promise that I won't get this far behind again, but I will. Let's be real for a minute, shall we? The end of May through the end of July looks like this, in my world:
Sister's wedding, backpacking in Africa, CONvergence, Remix, Apocalyptothon with bonus mod duties, interviewing people at work, Writercon.
When (many of) you see me at Writercon, I will be exceptionally wrung out, but also ever-so-happy that all the busy stuff is over and I can finally, I don't know, make jam! Bake bread! Sleep in (when cold meds aren't conspiring to screw up my sleep like today)! Participate in LJ!
Oh, and for those of us who haven't had time for an hour of tv a night this week, please keep cut-tagging those Torchwood reactions. I have all the eps. I just won't have time to watch them until my Remix is done. (Why yes, I started it Wednesday. WHAT? See the above list of crazy-making. And the assignments came out while I was in Africa. I may have been crazy to sign up, but... REMIX.)

I can't shut this thing down.
I'm losing sleep waiting for Torchwood dl's because I literally CANNOT WAIT to see it every night.
*taps foot impatiently for Four*
Last night? 3am. So today I was manic as hell and could not shut up after having a healthy lunch, a glass of wine and a large-ass iced latte. I was spouting off about how annoying I am in the workplace and everyone was busting up in laughter - so that only spurred me on. To the point where I started muttering just shut up, shut UP to myself. Apparently it's hysterical when I threaten to stab myself in the eyeball with a pen.
Someday I really will do something about my loudmouthy-ness. Because I can't get another job where I have to be quiet, I'll never last. Maybe I should cut out caffeine. Or Torchwood.
Um, what was I saying?
Ooh, dl done, gotta go, bye. (Shut UP).

A Thursday. Today. This Particular Thursday.
I'm just... Fricking stunned, ya'll.
THIS IS NEVILLE. NEVILLE! LONGBOTTOM!
I... I... have no words. Some kids really luck out with the passing of their adolescence. Others... not so much. Just... dayum, boy! Look at the baby face! Now go back and look at the HOTTIE again!
All this in the middle of an Alexander Skarsgard sexy-off. *G*
~
Wow, this is eye-opening: http://www.worldometers.info/
World statistics in real time. You'll never believe where I got it: Jeff Bridges' Website, which I got to from The Church of Dudeism, of which I am now an ordained minister. I can perform weddings. No shoes allowed, and your ceremony must include at least one four legged animal.
~
This is the weirdest frickin' thing that's ever happened to me on the Internet. I think you sould probably be tripping HARD on something first, or at least stoned. Warning: NSFW and really, really bizarre and kind of disturbing. Remember a long time ago I pointed out the link with the naked lady sort of pouring through a bunch of clouds out of the sky? It's much, much weirder than that. I have no idea if there's something I'm supposed to be taking away from this, or if it's that kind of art that just... is. *shrug*
I like pictures of kitties and flowers and stuff.
~
Speaking of kitties, I took Charlotte to the vet today, and she got a clean bill of health. So yay! No fleas or anything. And she didn't kill anybody during the exam, so double yay! I thought we'd lose at least a hand or something, but she sat there like a good girl, so we can call it a decent day! :)
Oh, I almost forgot! She did have one serious problem that requires medication...
ACNE. No, srsly. Apparently, the plastic bowls they've been using all their lives collect bacteria and if they don't clean their chins well enough, they get terrible acne. So I had to buy them stainless steel bowls today, and pick them up some Stridex Pads tomorrow!
~
And now... Dragons!

As the song says, 'In 5 years time...'
So I actually missed tonight's ep. Was out with work colleagues seeing Transformers 2. Got home with plans for a final cuppa tea before bedulating, only to see the various flailing reaction posts on LJ and gave into curiosity and caught up on BBC iPlayer.
Now that was more like it. Plot continues to unravel at a frightening pace, tremendous acting from all (Capaldi has never been finer), some beautiful moments between the characters and some nice development from certain quarters. Tomorrow will have its work cut out to live up to the tension of this episode.
And now to the SPOILERS for ep 4 (and the 'Next time' trailer for ep 5). ( If you are not spoiled for ep 4 then keep it that way, seriously... )
