Our Goal

Here we charter a resistance to ad exposure for Basic and Logged out users on LiveJournal. We desire a system where opt out users will not have to see ads, even in the journals of their Plus friends.

We are focused on providing technical solutions to make LJ an ad free experience for opt out free users. We also recognize this development may mean some people would like alternatives to LiveJournal; we will also focus on cataloguing, reviewing, and/or developing those. To see what we have already accomplished, check out our guides and reviews of LiveJournal alternatives.

We do not aim, in any way or form, at providing solutions for Plus users who would like to remove ads or change the way they are displayed. Plus users have decided that getting ads in exchange for benefits was a good bargain so they have to assume this decision. Besides, we would like to remind Plus users that preventing the display of ads is a violation of the Terms of Service. Plus users who would like to get rid of ads can switch back to Basic.

Our Rules

Anonymous comments are not allowed and comments by non-members are screened by default. IP logging is turned on for everyone.

Membership is moderated. To join the community, go to this page and click the "Join Community" button. Your request will be sent to the moderators.

While we often tolerate bitching and ranting in comments, posts are moderated to ensure we keep focused on information and solutions, instead of rehashes of complaints.

Abuse or harassment of anyone, including LJ staff or LJ volunteers, is forbidden and an instantly bannable offense. Insults or any other sort of name calling are not tolerated and will get you instantly banned too.

Promotion

Users who would like to promote the community can add "no ads on lj" or "no_lj_ads" as one of their interests. You will also find icons and banners here.

When Were Ads Introduced?

March 8, 2006: original ad level introduction post in lj_biz.
March 8, 2006: first Post in lj_ads. The VP of Worldwide Sales for Six Apart asks for feedback and suggestions.
April 14, 2006: the new Plus Accounts are officially introduced in news. Later in the month, it becomes the new default account.
June 2006: the Plus level is extended to communities. It becomes the new default account.
September 7, 2006: sponsored communities are announced in lj_ads.
September 29, 2006: sponsored communities are announced in lj_biz. They are heavily highlighted to logged-out, Basic and Plus users on the frontpage and in interest searches.
September 29, 2006: sponsored features are announced in lj_biz. Logged-out, Basic and Plus users see ads on pages where you can set up these features.
October 2006: first tracking cookie on the homepage set by a Sponsored Community.
January 2007: a few officials communities, including news, start showing ads.
January 2007: an ad is put on the homepage. It is visible to logged-out (and Plus) users.
