Is Gizmo sending out promotional emails to LJTalk users?
I've received a promotional Gizmo offer email with the title of "Have people call you anywhere in the world for virtually FREE!" to an email I have never signed up to the Gizmo Project with, besides signing in with the associated LiveJournal to LJTalk.

[info]kunzite1 has also confirmed receiving this email to an email associated with LiveJournal.

The email, however, makes no mention of LJTalk, only of Gizmo's services.

So, in short, by signing into LJTalk, there is strong evidence you are opting in to receiving promotional emails from Gizmo you never asked for, turning LJTalk into a bonafide sponsored feature complete with promotional advertising emails, even to paid members.

Added note: This probably only happens if you signed into the actul Gizmo Project for LJ Talk client, not using a "third party" client.

We had a previous post on Gizmo and related issues here.

Sidenote: "contextual popups" were renamed to "contextual hover menus" because ad blockers would block the file, so it was renamed, unlike when ad_base.css was included in everyone's site scheme CSS.

Let me get this straight... this is for signing into LJ Talk with any client, or just Gizmo? I use Gaim exclusively - I've never downloaded Gizmo - and

Bleh, for some reason this posted before I'd finished. Anyway, I was going to say I've never received an email about Gizmo. Or if I have, it was auto-deleted as spam, but I'm guessing it probably wouldn't have been caught anyway. (I use very conservative settings; I don't like auto-deleting stuff, but spam was really getting on my nerves so now I do auto-delete the stuff that is very obviously spam according to SpamAssassin.)

Hmmm.... Interesting. I have yet to set up LJ Talk, and was going to do so via GAIM anyway, since I seem to have eleventybillion IM accounts, so multi-protocol clients are the only way to go for me.

[info]foxfirefey's post pushed me in the direction of leaving LJ Talk on the shelf, but your comment has given me some hope. Now I wonder if any GAIM-only users have gotten the spam mentioned above.

You might be safe if you only do GAIM.

I, too, am using, or rather, used GAIM for LJ Talk and never received such emails. Although LJ Talk kept kicking me offline for no good reason, so I stopped using it altogether. Plus nobody else was using it either so it was really kind of pointless.

I think it's only using the Gizmo Project for LJ Talk. If you never received a "Welcome to Gizmo" email from signing into GAIM, then you're probably safe. I have a utility account a group has been using for notifications that has only been signed into with Adium, and it hasn't gotten either of those. I don't think the Gizmo project gets your email unless you sign in with their branded client, because I think that's the only way to set up receiving voicemails there, which it does automatically.

I got one of those emails 4 days ago, but it was sent to the email address I signed up with for Gizmo, so I can say that for me at least, it's not related to LJTalk in any way.

You're right; I dismissed it as spam at first but when I read this I went back to see if it was the same e-mail. It was.
