Updates of sorts. [Sep. 5th, 2008|07:22 am]

david_von_staal
OK, so about 2 years ago some guy on myspace was in college making films. He makes all of his projects with the help of friends and people that can do it for free. I decided to help him out by mailing off about 3 mix CDs of tracks I've made.

The film is finished, and it is a short horror movie, just shy of being 45 minutes long. He is mailing off several copies to me. The film is called "Violent Black."

I consider this something I can add to a Music/Sound resume and portfolio. Names are in the credits, yadda yadda yadda.

This same guy is now in the planning stages for a second horror movie. He asked me if I could record an actual soundtrack this time for the second film, and I have said yes.

As with the first film, everyone who helps with the movie is helping out for free. These films are for college projects.

This film is currently titled "Bad Trip." In the e-mail that the guy has sent me, he states this: "It is a horror movie that takes place in 1991/ 92. The 'high concept' description of it would be 'Henry: Portrait of a serial killer' meets 'The last Horror Movie' or if you haven't seen that, the documentry sections of 'Behind the Mask: The rise of Leslie Vernon' "

He has included with the e-mail an actual script of the movie, which I have downloaded and am currently reading.

The film will include a timecode, and I will probably have to use some software to sync the music with the movie, or at least, something to help mix the music alongside the movie. He mentioned Adobe CS3, but I am thinking about giving Vegas 8 a shot first. I have an S-Video Out on the back of the computer, so maybe I can preview everything on an actual TV during the recording/mixing.

Anyways, I have a while until I am handed footage of "Bad Trip," so I am trying to get prepared beforehand.

2 other people are probably going to help me out, one being a multi-instrumentalist, Tony, the other is a guy who makes ambient drones, Napalm Dave. The music needed in the movie: Late-80's-to-early-90's rock with a sinister feeling to it, and dark ambient. I am going to write out all of the rock music, program the drums, and then record Tony playing the music I write out. Then with Napalm Dave, I plan on remixing his ambient drones (he layers sounds on top of each other and then using a bit of trickery he blends the sounds together until they seem like one single drone, so I've been thinking that it would be interesting to remix that kind of material, since the drone would change drastically if the individual parts were manipulated even slightly - given the way he mixes his material).

I know that this will be somewhat challenging, but I also think of that as being the fun part; Figuring out how to get everything done by whatever means necessary. As I said before though, I have a bit of time to prepare for it all. The actual recording and mixing starts next year. His last film took him 2 years to complete, and he has to rely on people (mostly friends) who can help him out for free during every phase of the film's creation. He was able to do that the last time, so it figures he'll most likely be able to do it again. And it also takes time because he edits the film personally, to his own liking - which I don't blame him, because he creates the storyboard and the script.

I see this as an opportunity to add another thing to my portfolio/resume.

coming soon...

A review of Metallica's new album Death Magnetic

...so far I'm disappointed with the album name. Isn't it a bit too "death metaly"? I mean, isn't that type of album name reserved for Megadeth, Monster Magnet or Morbid Angel along with a cover of overly attractive blondes or a drawing of a mutilated corpses piled on top of one another for no good reason.

...I'll write a review tomorrow when I have time...but I must say the instrumentation is good, but it isn't anything new. I've heard some of this stuff in the harder Christian rock bands out there. Some tracks sound like something Dream Theater would come up with during a warm-up before seriously practicing for a show or to make an album.

Old lady working at a Kangaroo gas station: "You know it's illegal to drive barefoot, right? You can get arrested and suffer some heavy fees."

Really lady? Are you going to arrest me?

You have that smug look of a cop. But wait, your uniform is a Kangaroo smock. Are you a cop? No. Do you have some morbid fear of exposed feet? Yes. Seek help. I bet you never take your shoes off, even when you shower.

People who are disgusted by bare feet have one hell of a problem.

I would understand if I were shoving my feet in your face, but... I'm not doing that. Besides, you're a little too past the PMS stage to be this bitchy. Smoke some grass, drink a shot, hell, snort a line if you have to. Just calm the fuck down.

oh this is interesting...beginning of the end??? [Sep. 1st, 2008|02:44 pm]

waddlyman

Rural Kanpur is fighting its most frightening scourge —
a mystery disease that has left a long line of bodies in its
trail and doesn’t seem anywhere finished.

What started from one village two weeks ago has now
spread to 350 and has so far claimed 160 lives. Thousands
more are bed-ridden. On an average, 15 to 20 people have been
dying every day; Saturday saw the highest toll in a day: 24.

The district’s health department is somewhat confused
about the nature of the disease that has struck. At the beginning,
the diagnosis was viral fever. Then doctors concluded
that it was falciparum malaria. But after two weeks, they have
ruled out both but still don’t have an exact answer.

Seems like a new illness may have just been discovered in a very poor and rural city in India. This isn't an epidemic but it does seem like people don't know what to make of it.

Mayhaps this is the very start of the end...I told ya'll a pandemic was more than due to come...I sort of expected the Spanish Flu if anything.

I think I may go watch the Canadian series ReGenesis again just to scare myself again on RL illnesses and potentially government made pathogens.

Also:
Hemorrhagic Fever, Ebola Virus or Marburg haemorrhagic fever are no way of going home.

Notice the odd similarities. [Sep. 1st, 2008|11:55 am]

First, a picture of H. P. Lovecraft.

And now, a picture of Timothy McVeigh.

Does anybody notice the similarities?

This is reminding me of Lovecraft's story "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."
